The Swiss attended the European Championship last summer, their third big event in the preceding seven years. Wales was exonerated. Fishlock’s discovery of Green in the vicinity gave the visitors a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, but her attempt failed. Six minutes before the end of regular time, Dutch VAR Jochem Kamphuis made his second significant intervention. Bachmann thought she had scored her second goal when she made a quick move in the box and reached the far corner.

But, the goal was ultimately disallowed due to a slight offside committed by Riola Xhemaili, a substitute. Wales appeared defeated for a brief moment, but they managed to escape again. Wales had to dig even deeper after forcing extra time because Switzerland dominated the added minutes.

Rachel Rinast’s volley and Crnogorcevic’s tight miss came after Bachmann manoeuvred around a few obstacles before shooting too close to O’Sullivan. Afterwards, Xhemaili nearly scored with a header, but Rachel Rowe headed it over the goal line.

After that, it appeared as though an epic contest would be settled by a shootout, but Switzerland created one more chance. After making progress down the left, Geraldine Reuteler crossed for replacement Humm to score the game-winning goal.
