Who will USWNT Coach Vlatko Andonovski travel with on the USA Women Football World Cup 2023 squad

The United States, the current champions, is one of the favourites to win. But who will be on the team for the World Cup with USWNT Coach Vlatko Andonovski? The U.S. women’s national team will attempt to become the first team in history to win a third straight Women’s World Cup championship this summer. Women Football World Cup fans can buy USA vs Vietnam Tickets from our website.

The global champion has not had it easy recently, as losses to England, Spain, and Germany in the final months of 2022 demonstrate the expansion of women’s football in Europe. Nevertheless, despite recent struggles, this is still a talented team, and head coach Vlatko Andonovski will face high expectations at his maiden World Cup competition struggle.

Who will he put his faith in to perform admirably on the international stage and manage the strain of competing for the USWNT?

Let’s take a closer look at the 23 players on Andonovski’s World Cup roster.

GOALKEEPERS

The goalkeepers are anticipated to be this roster’s most predictable position. The trio that Andonovski has chosen for the USWNT’s previous four camps includes Alyssa Naeher, Casey Murphy, and Adrianna Franch, with Naeher probably being the No. 1 pick.

Bella Bixby (uncapped) and Aubrey Kingsbury (one cap) were both called up in 2022, but it now seems doubtful that either will force their way into the World Cup roster.

DEFENDERS

There will undoubtedly be a major figure left off this roster given the calibre and experience the USWNT’s defence options possess. Alana Cook, Naomi Girma, and Becky Sauerbrunn seem like lock-ins, and Emily Fox and Sofia Huerta also secured regular starting positions in the run-up to the World Cup. Another person who is quite likely to join the roster is Crystal Dunn. That’s already six names.

Who will Andonovski choose next?

Tierna Davidson, who returned from an ACL injury in March, provides excellent coverage for both the full-back and centre-back positions. As for Emily Sonnett, who made her first appearance in six months following an injury during the USWNT’s January camp.

Andonovski has also had a look at Hailie Mace, Carson Pickett, and Imani Dorsey, with Casey Krueger joining the team again in April after giving birth to her first child last year.

When choosing the 23 players he will take to Australia and New Zealand, one of Andonovski’s biggest responsibilities will be choosing a balanced group of defenders and making sure there is talent and coverage in all areas.

MIDFIELDERS

There are several uncertainties regarding the USWNT’s midfield, especially its backbone. After the 2021 Summer Olympics, Julie Ertz took some time off to give birth to her first child. Andonovski had a hard time casting a replacement for her in her absence. Women Football World Cup fans can buy Portugal vs USA Tickets from our website.

Sam Coffey, who seems to be the ideal candidate for the position, didn’t get any playing time despite Rose Lavelle’s success in a deeper position versus New Zealand in January. While many people think Coffey should be on the World Cup squad, it appears that Andonovski has other plans.

He is now testing Taylor Kornieck as a No. 6 and also has Andi Sullivan as a capable replacement there. Then, in April, Andonovski called up Ertz to his team despite the fact that she had not yet returned to the pitch. Her return is significant, and it undoubtedly alters predictions about the midfielders who will be selected.

She demonstrated against Ireland that she can play very much like her former self, but can she be ready in time to make the World Cup roster?

Lavelle and Lindsey Horan from Lyon will undoubtedly be travelling to Australia and New Zealand. Ashley Sanchez also seems to have cemented her place in the coach’s ideas.

USA Women Football World Cup Players

Catarina Macario, one of this team’s most crucial players, is currently in the last phases of her recuperation from an ACL injury. One would assume she would also have a ticket if all went well upon her return. While Kristie Mewis had a great chance to shine at the SheBelieves Cup and stake her claim, Jaelin Howell still has a remote possibility of making the roster.

FORWARDS

The USWNT currently possesses an absurd amount of depth in the forward areas. Sophia Smith, the youngest MVP in the history of the NWSL, had one of the best years in football in 2022. At the age of 33, Alex Morgan became the first player to ever win the NWSL Golden Boot by scoring more league goals than any other player.

Catarina Macario, one of USWNT most crucial players

Ashley Hatch and Mallory Swanson (née Pugh), who started 2023 in unbelievably fantastic condition, were fifth and sixth in those scoring standings, respectively. But against Ireland, tragedy struck as Swanson was hoisted off with a knee injury. Her chances of playing in the World Cup will most likely be dashed, depriving the Americans of their best striker.

In Swanson’s absence, Trinity Rodman, one of the most promising young players in international football, might be given more responsibility. Or maybe Andonovski will start to use someone with more expertise, like Megan Rapinoe, more frequently as a result.

SWNT Coach Vlatko Andonovski

The coach’s selection dilemma will have only gotten worse with Lynn Williams’ comeback in January because both she and Midge Purce made an impression on the coach enough to keep their spots on the team for the SheBelieves Cup.

Alyssa Thompson, a talented young performer who made her debut in October, isn’t even mentioned yet. She wasn’t initially on Andonovski’s roster for April, but he said he expected her to “make a case” for the World Cup team.  She was brought in to replace Swanson after her injury and made her NWSL debut in March with a sensational goal.

The most likely candidates to be added to the roster for this summer are Smith, Rapinoe, and Morgan, with Andonovski expected to make some really difficult decisions regarding the other players.

PREDICTED XI

The USWNT will continue to play in a 4-3-3 formation, with Naeher probably taking the starting position in goal. Girma, Sauerbrunn, and Cook are competing for the two centre-back positions, with Cook perhaps missing out on a spot in the starting lineup.

When it comes to the outside backs, there are three guys battling for two positions once more. Fox might defeat Huerta on the other flank while Dunn ought to start on the left.

The USWNT’s best possibilities for a midfield three would be Lavelle, Horan, and Macario, albeit that relies on the latter’s fitness. The forward line, where Smith will play, Rodman will start on the left, and Morgan will lead, is perhaps the most difficult to predict from the right possibility.

USWNT XI (4-3-3): Naeher; Fox, Girma, Sauerbrunn, Dunn; Horan, Lavelle, Macario; Smith, Morgan, Rodman.

IMPORTANT ABSENTEES

The most glaring absence of all is Swanson, who has emerged as the USWNT’s more dependable goal scorer to begin 2023. She is the most recent celebrity to have her World Cup aspirations dashed by injury problems, and her World Cup is probably certainly done.

Abby Dahlkemper, a defender, underwent surgery in November, and while she has since offered a favourable report, there is no estimated time for when she will return to the field of play.

There is also no word on when Tobin Heath will resume performing. She had knee surgery in September after returning to the United States to join OL Reign after an injury-riddled time with Arsenal.

Christen Press, who has been sidelined since June 2022 due to an ACL injury, is also affected. “1 knee. a year. 3 operations. My special voyage,” Press stated in a March 1, 2023 statement on Instagram.

USWNT Player Swanson will miss this year's Women Football World Cup 2023

“Continuous hope and unwavering optimism. Small wins. giving up.”

Since August 2021, Sam Mewis has not played for club or country. The midfielder underwent a second operation in January 2023 to address a knee issue.

“This has been a really difficult time for me personally, and I’ve been devastated to be away from football for so long,”

Upon giving the update, she said. No timetable has been given for her return.

In front of a boisterous crowd of 22,294 spectators at CITY PARK, the U.S. Women’s National Team defeated the Republic of Ireland 1-0 in the second of four international friendlies between the two World Cup-bound nations. Defending captain Alana Cook became just the third player in USWNT history to score on her birthday.

Joining Alex Morgan and Mia Hamm, as she made her maiden international goal on her 26th birthday. The USA got off to a fast start as defender and team captain Becky Sauerbrunn nearly opened the scoring off a corner kick in the third minute when she crashed into the box and allied with a great header that nervy off the crossbar.

Sauerbrunn was honored in her hometown before the game for earning 200 caps. Her streak of 215 games without a goal for the USA nearly came to an end on this opportunity. Casey Murphy, the USA’s custodian, easily stopped Ireland’s first-half opportunities, which included midfielder Katie McCabe’s long-range attempt in the eighth minute and a deflection off a low, bouncing ball in the 24th minute.

Murphy had to kick the ball away for a corner as it fell close to the goal after a drilled delivery into the box blasted the ball straight up into the air.

United States women Football World Cup Team

In the 43rd minute, Cook blasted a long ball into the box from at least 40 yards out that flew over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net to give the USA what would ultimately be the game-winning goal.

Cook’s goal made her the 117th member of the USWNT to score and the second defender to do it this year. The United States performed well to tighten up its defense in the second half after taking the lead.   The team did well to continue creating chances while ultimately depriving the visitors of any significant chances on goal.

They used all six of their substitutions, including five in the second half and defender Tierna Davidson. Who entered the game in the 29th minute for Sauerbrunn in a deliberate move to manage minutes. By the end of this game, every single one of the 11 players on the field was different from the starters from the United States 2-0 victory over Ireland four days prior.

USA Women Football World Cup Team Head coach Vlatko Andonovski made 6 deviations to the initial lineup from the teams’ April 8 meeting. Murphy became the ninth custodian in USWNT history to reach double-digit shutouts after recording her 10th career shutout.

In tallying to Hope Solo’s 102 shutouts, Briana Scurry’s 72, Alyssa Naeher’s 53, Nicole Barnhart’s 24, and Siri Mullinix’s 21. Mary Harvey’s 13, Saskia Webber’s 13, and Amy Allmann Griffin’s 10, she also joins Hope Solo’s 102 shutouts. On Sunday, July 9, the USWNT will play again when it faces Wales in their 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup Send-Off Match, sponsored by Visa.

Rundown for scoring goals:

United States — Alana Cook, 43:00:

Following a brief corner kick, Cook received the ball just past midfield towards the left side and, with no one pressing her. Fired a shot from at least 40 yards away that flew over the custodian. The custodian managed to get a hand on the ball, but it was not enough to prevent the ball from floating into the goal. IRL 0, USA 1,

NOTES ADDITIONAL:

As the 16th woman to play for the USWNT after giving birth to a child, defender Casey Krueger received her first cap on October 21, 2021, and her first since giving birth to her child in July of 2022. Women Football World Cup fans can buy Portugal vs USA Tickets from our website.

Tierna Davidson, a defender for Sauerbrunn, entered the game in the 29th minute, earning her 49th cap and her first since February 23, 2022, and successfully making a comeback to the pitch for the USA after hurting her ACL while practicing with the Chicago Red Stars in March 2022.

Veteran defender Kelley O’Hara, a two-time World Cup champion, also made a comeback from injury after missing the USA’s final game in the summer, starting and playing 45 minutes.

USWNT Midfielder:

Julie Ertz, played the entire second half of the USWNT’s second match back since the Olympics in Tokyo.

In her third appearance for the USWNT, 18-year-old Alyssa Thompson made her first start and played the whole 90 minutes. Mallory Swanson (formerly Pugh), who started for the USWNT against Sweden at the 2016 Olympics at the age of 18 years and 105 days, was the youngest player to do so before Thompson, who is just 18 years and 155 days old.

Since Tierna Davidson, then 19 years old, started for the USA against Chile in September 2018, Thompson was the first teenager to do so. The age disparity between starts in a USWNT match has never been greater than the one between Becky Sauerbrunn, who is almost 38 years old, and Thompson, who is 18 years old.

When Sauerbrunn made her USWNT debut on January 16, 2008, Thompson was three years old. In Carli Lloyd’s final match, in October 2021, when she was 39 years old, and Sophia Smith, 21. Both played against Korean Republic, the highest age disparity between starts was 18.

USWNT Record at St. Louis

The USA played in its sixth game ever in St. Louis and its tenth in Missouri. They have a record of seven wins, three draws, and zero losses in its ten games played in the Show-Me State. The USA has had nine different players score thus far in 2023. With the top scorer being Swanson with seven goals. Lavelle and Morgan with two goals each, and Alana Cook, and Lynn Williams. Ashley Hatch, Taylor Kornieck, Emily Fox, and Lindsey Horan with one goal each.

USWNT has kept six opponents scoreless in seven games so far in 2023. Including four straight shutouts to start the year. The USA has only let up one goal, which came against Brazil in the last seconds of the SheBelieves Cup. Both Casey Murphy and Alyssa Naeher have three shutouts thus far this season.

In 60 games with the USWNT, head coach Vlatko Andonovski has a 49W-5L-6D record. With 25 of those games coming against teams in the top-13 rankings at home in 40 of those games.

U.S. women Football Team defeats the Republic of Ireland 2-0 at Austin, Texas in front of a sold-out crowd

In the first of two international friendlies as part of the USA’s penultimate training camp. Before the 2023 FIFA Women’s Football World Cup roster is decided later this summer. In front of a boisterous sellout crowd of 20,593 spectators at Q2 Stadium. Defender Emily Fox scored her first goal for her country, while midfielder Lindsey Horan added another off a successful penalty. The USA tried to find ways to break down the Irish early on, so it was a physical encounter from the start.

The early going of the game was a chess match with both sides switching possession with the majority of the action taking place in the middle third. After a good run of controlled possession ended with a cross from left-back Crystal Dunn that found forward Sophia Smith in the box, the USA presented its first threat in the eighth minute.

Smith stretched to connect with a shot but her attempt missed the mark as she made her first appearance of the year after returning from a minor injury. When a corner kick resulted in a header at the back post in the 19th minute, Ireland nearly took the lead.

U.S. Women Football Team Player:

However, forward Alex Morgan did well to clear the danger off the goal line, and midfielder Rose Lavelle quickly made a clearance. Five minutes later, Ireland put together a string of assaults, and the USA demonstrated its defensive prowess by stopping a string of successive close-range shots.

In the 36th minute, the U.S. came close to scoring when Lavelle found Smith in the penalty area after making room for herself close to the finish line on the left side. Smith delivered a strong shot that was blocked by Irish custodian Courtney Brosnan.

A minute later, Fox received the ball from midfielder Andi Sullivan deep in the middle of the field, took her time to dribble, and then buried her first career goal with a low drive from outside the box into the lower left corner. Mallory Swanson, a forward, was stretchered off the pitch shortly before halftime after suffering a left knee injury from a heavy tackle. In her place, Trinity Rodman took over.

Both teams attacked with greater ferocity in the second half, with the Americans creating many chances highlighted by tight shots from Rodman and Lavelle after some explosive team build-ups. Julie Ertz, a midfielder, replaced Sullivan in the 67th minute. This was her first appearance for the USWNT since the bronze medal game of the Tokyo Olympics and her first cap in 611 days.

Ertz, who received recognition before the game for earning her 100th cap in March 2020, becomes the 15th woman to play for the USWNT after giving birth to her baby in August 2022.

USWNT Player Lindsey Horan

Horan was fouled inside the box while controlling a pass from Ertz with her back to the goal as the U.S. kept up the pressure on the Irish defense, earning her a penalty kick.

Horan took the opportunity to capitalize and doubled with a strong strike the lead and seal the win.  Despite the close score, the USA was in control the whole match, scoring 25 shots with six of them being on target while holding the Republic of Ireland to just eight shots with one of them being on goal. The USA also had 10 corner kicks to Ireland’s 6, and they had 70 percent of the possession.

The two teams will square off on Tuesday, April 11 at 7:30 p.m. ET / 6:30 p.m. CT at the brand-new CITY PARK in St. Louis on HBO Max, Universo, and Peacock. Becky Sauerbrunn, a native of St. Louis, will be celebrated in her hometown for completing her 200th camp at the beginning of the year. USA – Emily Fox (Andi Sullivan) scores in the 37th minute. Fox received a pass from Sullivan that was played outside the box and toward the middle of the field. She took a few steps to the right before firing a strong right-footed shot across her body from 20 yards out that went deep into the bottom left corner as the Ireland defense took its time to close her down.  IRL 0, USA 1,

USA – Lindsey Horan (Penalty Kick), 80th minute:

Following a risky opportunity that saw Horan hauled down within the area, Horan went up to the penalty spot and converted with a low shot to the left that the goalkeeper was able to stop but was nevertheless carried into the net by the velocity of the strike. IRL 0, USA 1

ADDITIONAL NOTES: In her 28th appearance, defender Emily Fox scored her first goal of the season. She was one of five players who came into this game hoping to score their first-ever goal for their country.

  • With her goal, Fox becomes the seventh different player and first defender to score for the USWNT in 2023, as well as the 116th player overall.
  • Andi Sullivan, a midfielder, got her first assist of 2023 and the sixth of her career.
  • Midfielder Lindsey Horan’s successful penalty attempt gave her her 27th goal in international play and her first of 2023.
  • The USA played Brazil 2-1 in Frisco on February 22 to win the 2023 SheBelieves Cup, making this game in Austin its 32nd match overall in the state of Texas and it’s second straight in the Lone Star State.
  • The USWNT has defeated opponents 132-12 in winning all 32 of its games in Texas.
  • The USWNT and the Republic of Ireland met for the 14th time overall on Saturday. The USA is 14-0-0 in the overall series versus the Irish.
  • In 59 games with the USWNT, head coach Vlatko Andonovski has a 48W-5L-6D record; 25 of those games came against teams in the world’s top-13 rankings, and 39 of those games were played at home.

Republic of Ireland Women Football World Cup Players:

Ireland used four players who were born and raised in the USA. Courtney Brosnan, a goalkeeper who played for Syracuse. Sinead Farrelly, is a midfielder who now plays for Gotham FC after attending Virginia. Marissa Sheva, a forward for the Washington Spirit, and Kyra Carusa, a forward who attended Stanford and Georgetown.
