Five uncapped players but no Parisse in Italy Rugby World Cup training squad

Italy has called up five unrestricted players to the pre-Rugby World Cup training squad, including former England prospect Paolo Odogwu,

The 26-year-old centre-forward Odogwu was in the England squad under former manager Eddie Jones all of 2021 without earning a cap and has now turned his attention to international rugby for Italy, having qualified thanks to his father.

Coventry native Odogwu, who plays for Stade Francais, has been open about his desire to go to the World Cup earlier this year and has hinted that his best chance is with the Italian side.

Harlequins Englishman Dino Lamb, Zebra props Paolo Buonfiglio and Matteo Nocera, and Toulouse French scrum-half Martin Page-Relo are the other unrestricted players named by Italy manager Kieran Crowley on Monday. Rugby World Cup fans can buy Italy Rugby World Cup Tickets from our website.

The 39-year-old former captain Parisse has been in good form for Toulon this season and was hoping for a recall despite having retired from international rugby following the 2019 World Cup, where he was denied a swan song after Italy’s final match against New Zealand was canceled due to Typhoon Hagibis.

In March, Crowley told reporters that loose forward Parisse, Italy’s top scoring player with 142 appearances, was thinking about a tournament in France. Before the World Cup, Italy will play warm-up matches with Scotland, Ireland, Romania and Japan.
