How can you become eligible for The Open?

Players can qualify for The Open in a variety of ways. The 156 available spots are distributed across many exemption categories, accounting for more than half of them. Players previously excluded from the rule include, for instance, any Champion Golfer under 60.

The top 10 finishers from the most recent Open Championship, are the champions of certain elite amateur competitions. And the top 30 finishers on the Rankings for the FedExCup and Race to Dubai. The 151st Open’s complete list of exemption categories is available here.

The Open Qualifying Series and Final Qualifying provide additional spots in the field. The exemption list, The Open Qualifying Series, and Final Qualifying will all be used to fill the remaining spots if a full field of 156 players has not been attained.

The Open Qualification Series: What is it?

The Open Qualifying Series, or OQS, is a collection of professional tour competitions held on various continents where competitors can qualify for The Open. Players who are not currently exempt from The Open will be given spots in each event.

What competitions will be part of The Open Qualification Series in 2023?

The Open Qualification Series’ schedule is as follows:

• Johannesburg Open held from November 24-27, 2022;
• ISPS Handa Australian Open held from December 2022;
• The Arnold Palmer Invitational, sponsored by Mastercard, held from March 2-5, 2023
• World City Championship, held from March 23–26 and sponsored by the Hong Kong Golf Club
• Wells Fargo Championship, May 4–7.
• Mizuno Open is from May 25–28.
• The Memorial Tournament is from June 1–4.
• 22–25 June: KOLON Korea Open
• 29–2 July: Sir Nick Faldo’s Betfred British Masters

The Open Qualification Series participants are who?

The Open Qualification Series events’ starting lineups will be visible on TheOpen.com on the days before each one.

What will happen if players later qualify for exemption under different categories?

In contrast to prior standards, the top players who make the cut and are not already exempt as of The Open’s entry deadline on June 1 will be given qualifying spots.

The next non-exempt player will be chosen from a reserve list for each event played before June if a golfer who qualified for a qualifying spot later becomes exempt under one or more categories before the entry deadline.

What transpires if the final qualifying position is tied?

The player with the higher ranking in the OWGR (as published at the start of each week) will be given a place in The Open in the event of a tie for a qualifying spot, with the exception of ties for first place, which will be decided in line with the regulations for the tournament in question.

What happens if the OWGR rankings of the players on the field are the same or different?

A card countback will be used to break ties when two or more competitors have the same OWGR or when two or more competitors have no OWGR. If a tie still exists after the second 9 holes, the last 6 or 3 or 2 or 1 hole from the first 9 holes of the final round in OQS will be used in the card countback. The third, second, and first rounds of the event will all use the same card countback if a tie still develops.

When Francesco Molinari attempts to defend his Champion Golfer of the Year title at Royal Portrush in this year’s 148th Open, he will have the chance to become a member of an exclusive group.

The Claret Jug has only been won back-to-back by a few golfers, with Padraig Harrington becoming the most recent to do so with his triumphs in 2007 and 2008. Watson defeated fellow Americans Hale Irwin and Andy Bean by one stroke at Royal Birkdale the following year to claim his third Open victory in four years. When Lee Trevino won The Open twice in a row, the first time at Royal Birkdale in 1971, only weeks after winning the US Open, he was one of the most popular golfers in the world.

The Merry Mex defeated Lu Liang-Huan at the 100th Open, then successfully defended his championship at Muirfield to thwart Jack Nicklaus’ attempt to complete the Grand Slam. With his second consecutive Claret Jug, he became the first since Arnold Palmer in 1962 to successfully defend the championship after the American won his first Open at Royal Birkdale the previous year.

In Bay Hill, where the top three finishers who weren’t previously exempt for the Championship were eligible for one of three berths in The British Open. Kitayama displayed outstanding poise down the stretch to win his first PGA Tour event with a nine-under total.

Kitayama, who had been in the lead after 54 holes, experienced a significant setback when his drive at the ninth hole went out of bounds, resulting in a triple-bogey.

The event was then completely open, as the lead often changed hands as players like Jordan Spieth. Rory McIlroy, Tyrrell Hatton, and Scottie Scheffler all seemed like they might win. But, Kitayama ultimately prevailed after making a birdie on the par-3 17th and an outstanding long putt on the 18th to leave the simplest of tap-ins for victory.

“It will be incredible to compete in The Open”, said Kitayama, who qualified for the Championship at St Andrew’s last year with a second-place result at the Genesis Scottish Open the previous week.

“It always feels amazing to play in a major, no matter what.”

Fred Daly  Royal Liverpool, 1947 

The first Irishman to win the title of Champion Golfer of the Year was Fred Daly. Who triumphed at Royal Liverpool in 1947 with an incredible score of 21 over par. Padraig Harrington, the first Irish Open champion since Daly and the first Open champion from the Republic of Ireland. Put up incredible performances to win back-to-back tournaments at Carnoustie and Royal Birkdale in 2007 and 2008.

Even though Harrington is the only Irishman to have won The Open twice, both of his victories were notable. But his first Open Championship victory stood out as the most dramatic.

Harrington began the day six shots behind leader Sergio Garcia. Eagled the 14th hole to move to six under par for the day and nine under for the competition. Giving him a one-shot advantage over Garcia who was one hole back at the time.

Still holding a slim lead on the 18th. Harrington visited the famed Barry Burn twice and appeared defeated as his chance appeared to be lost. But after Garcia’s winning putt from eight feet missed the hole on the 18th. Harrington took advantage of a second chance in the playoff to win his first major championship.

The Irishman went on to successfully defend his title the following year. Triumphing both the course and the weather at a breezy Royal Birkdale to become just the eighth player to do so in The Open Championship since World War II.

Darren Clarke 2011 Royal St. Georges

Darren Clarke defeated Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson by three strokes to win the 2011 Open at Royal St. George’s. Being a clear underdog entering the week, Clarke produced some remarkably steady and resilient golf at Royal St Georges in challenging. Wet, and windy conditions ensured he became the first Northern Ireland player to win The Open in 64 years.

A well-timed eagle in the last round gave Clarke a lead over Mickelson. Who was closing fast but began to wane on the back nine. Dustin Johnson’s shank on the 14th hole ended his prospects as well. But Clarke held firm and eventually captured the major that his career had so frequently hinted at.

Rory McIlroy 2014 Royal Liverpool

Rory McIlroy disproved an early belief in the golf world that his ball flight would make it tough for him to win an Open in 2014 with a stunning victory at Royal Liverpool. McIlroy beat Sergio Garcia and Rickie Fowler by two strokes on a course that has produced some of the greatest Open Champions in history.

Just six players have won The Open single-handedly since it was changed to a 72-hole competition. And McIlroy became the second Northern Irishman to win the championship in the past four years by holding off strong challenges on the final day. The Ulsterman was at ease enough to celebrate his victory on the 18th hole. Which would turn out to be his most recent triumph on British soil to date?

Shane Lowry 2019’s Royal Portrush

Shane Lowry, the most recent Champion Golfer of the Year and the second golfer from the Republic to receive that honor. Won by six strokes at Royal Portrush in 2019, making him a suitable homecoming triumph.

When The Open finally returned to Irish soil after a 58-year absence. Lowry recorded an incredible third round of 63 to lead the pack. After that, Lowry never looked back and won easily at home. The entire island came together to support their hero as he crossed the finish line on the 18th. Giving the 32-year-old one of the loudest cheers in recent memory.
