Fury about tree cutting near the Open championship location
Outraged locals claim that hundreds of trees that were cut down at a renowned Scottish golf course and Open championship location have not been restored after more than two years.
On the south side of Carnoustie Golf Course, 200 trees were felled in 2020 to make room for the laying of subterranean cables that would link the nearby Seagreen offshore wind farm to the power grid.
The Ferret, an independent investigative journalism cooperative, was told by a walker who frequently visits the area where the trees were removed that the region had changed from a “natural paradise” to a “wasteland.” One of Scotland’s most storied golfing locales is Carnoustie Links.
There are three golf courses there, including the Championship Course, which has frequently hosted the Open Championship, probably the sport’s most renowned event. The Championship Course is known as “Carnasty” because of its reputation as one of the most challenging golf courses in the world.
The Buddon Course, a component of Carnoustie Links, which bills itself as a “wonderful test of golf with remarkable natural beauty,” had the trees cut down close to the 15th and 16th holes.
1,000 new trees would be planted around the Carnoustie courses to replace those that were felled, and 80 of the cleared trees would be “sensitively transplanted” to new locations around the golf links, according to promises made by the managers of the courses, the wind farm’s owners, and Angus Council.
Locals assert that no fresh saplings have been planted, though. Additionally, they claim that trees slated for transplantation had to be destroyed because golf club staff members attempted to move them with a tree spade that was too tiny, allegedly damaging some of the trees’ roots.

The courses at Carnoustie are owned by Angus Council, which declared that it was “aware that replacement tree planting had begun” there. There would be “compensatory planting” to make up for the “usually unsuccessful” tree transplantation, it was verified.
The Carnoustie golf course management team, which manages the courses for the council, called the allegations “inaccurate” but failed to address any other inquiries from The Ferret.
The first planting season, which lasts from October 2023 to March 2024, will be finished by the end of the “reinstatement work,” according to Seagreen. A conflict over environmental management initially erupted at Carnoustie Links in 2006 as a result of the ten-year removal of hundreds of trees.
Ally Donaldson, a local homeowner, and former Dundee FC goalie who walks his dog on a circuit around the course led protests at the time. The removal of the trees in 2020, he added, left a stretch of the path near two ponds where he likes to feed the swans appearing like a “wilderness,” and he was “dumbfounded” by it.
He asserts that despite the management team purportedly purchasing 400 seedlings, no new trees have been planted anywhere on the courses. According to Donaldson, these were not planted but rather let rot in buckets of water.
Additionally, he asserted that the tree spade used by the course management team to try to transplant trees damaged their roots and caused them to tumble over when they were replanted. He said that instead of realizing that the tree spade was inadequate, they lifted 16 trees, again cutting off the roots and destroying the trees.
Birds no longer build their nests in the trees, according to Donaldson.
“What once served as a natural haven with plenty of native Silver Birch and Scots Pine in the southwest corner of the links is now a wasteland”, he claimed.
Ian Wallace, a fellow Carnoustie resident who also takes his dog on walks around the golf course, echoed Donaldson’s assertions. Wallace referred to the impact of the tree-felling in the southwest quadrant of the course as “terrible” and claimed that there was no sign of new trees being planted.
On the border of the Barry Buddon army training camp, which is owned by the Ministry of Defense, the cable corridor runs along the south side of the Carnoustie Links.
The cables will link Seagreen, a joint venture between SSE and French oil company Total that is situated 27 kilometers off the coast of Angus, to a new substation at Tealing.
Scottish Forestry does not require permission to cut down trees for new energy projects. Yet, a document sent to The Ferret states that in order for authorization to be given, five replacement trees had to be planted and maintained for a period of five years for each tree that was cut down at the location.
A representative for Scottish Forestry stated that because the trees were removed under the exception, it has no control over the restocking of Carnoustie. They continued,
“We would expect the local government to convince itself that any permission requirements are met.”
The creation and upkeep of the courses ultimately fall within the purview of the council. The Carnoustie Golf Links Management Committee was established in 1980. (CGLMC) to take care of the Carnoustie Links for it.
“The Carnoustie Golf Links can confirm that the material in your inquiry is false, according to a CGLMC spokeswoman. We have nothing more to say in this regard.”

According to the CGLMC’s website, they “continually” ensure and promote “best environmental management and conservation practices” and “realize the importance of protecting our environment.”
Parts of the approved reinstatement plan have already started, and Carnoustie Golf Links is advancing them on behalf of Seagreen Wind Energy Ltd, according to a Seagreen spokesperson:
“A suite of environmental analyses was completed to support the planning application for Seagreen. By the end of the first planting season (October 2023 to March 2024), all reinstatement will be done as necessary.”
Angus Council will work with Seagreen and CGMLT to
“guarantee that the needed replacement planting is provided when the development is complete,” according to a representative for the organization.
“Seagreen has not yet finished development at Carnoustie Links or on the wider grid connection,” the spokeswoman continued. Replacement planting must typically be provided in the first planting season following the completion of the grid connection zone, according to the terms of the planning licences.”
“The replacement tree planting has already started, the council is aware of this. According to information provided by the developer, tree transplantation was largely unsuccessful, and compensatory planting would be done in the proper proportion.”
