The R&A revealed on Tuesday the British Open Championship exemptions, which will take place this summer at Royal Liverpool. LIV Golf members will be permitted to take part in the competition. Following the example set by the Masters and U.S. Open. British Open 2023 fans can buy British Open Tickets from our website.
Players who have already secured invitations to Hoylake in July were listed by the R&A in its schedule. For the qualifying competitions and exemption categories for the 2023 competition. Former Open champions like Cameron Smith, Henrik Stenson, Louis Oosthuizen, and Phil Mickelson are included. As well as Seven players who placed in the top 10 at St. Andrews last year (Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau).

Since 2018, Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed have been competing in major championships. Thomas Pieters and Richard Bland are included. Since they placed in the top 30 in the Race to Dubai standings from the previous year. Joaquin Niemann and Talor Gooch are two more LIV notables who earned berths in the field by placing in the top 30 of the 2022 FedEx Cup rankings.
It is not entirely surprising that LIV members will be permitted to compete in this year’s Open. Because R&A chief Martin Slumbers hinted as much last fall.
According to Slumbers, “We’ll make public what we are going to do with reference to LIV golfers in January/February.”
British Open Championship exemptions
“But if you need direction, review what I suggested in July. No one has been banned by us. We won’t violate 150 years of tradition by keeping the Open closed. The name speaks for itself. And that is significant. What we’ll do is make sure that there are suitable qualifications and pathways. Next year, I’m excited to see Cam Smith start his round of the Open at about 9:40 a.m. The Open needs to distance itself from the current conflicts and make sure we uphold our principle—having the top players in the world compete—instead.”
The top finishers in the PGA Tour’s Arnold Palmer Invitational, Wells Fargo Championship, and Memorial, as well as the DP World Tour-co-sanctioned Genesis Scottish Open, will get field invites as part of the Open Qualification Series’ return. Moreover, there will be openings on the DP World Tour in the Made in HimmerLand and Betfred British Masters competitions.
At the World City Championship presented by the Hong Kong Golf Club, the Korea Open, and Japan’s Mizuno Open, more invitations will be up for grabs. For the Australian Open and Johannesburg Open, spots had already been given out. British Open fans can buy British Open 2023 Tickets from our website.

Also, there will be regional and final qualifying spots, each with 16 openings through the last four sites. The R&A also announced the addition of a new exemption for top amateur players, under which the individual who wins the St. Andrews Links Trophy. The Amateur Championship and the European Amateur Championship will be granted entry into the Open.
Johnnie Cole-Hamilton
Executive director of champions at the R&A, said,
“We have designed an interesting program of events that takes in many places across the world and provides the opportunity for players to earn a place in the Open at Royal Liverpool.”
“We value the assistance of our professional tour colleagues and anticipate watching each tournament to find out who will earn a coveted position in the Championship this year.”
