In front of a boisterous crowd of 22,294 spectators at CITY PARK, the U.S. Women’s National Team defeated the Republic of Ireland 1-0 in the second of four international friendlies between the two World Cup-bound nations. Defending captain Alana Cook became just the third player in USWNT history to score on her birthday.

Joining Alex Morgan and Mia Hamm, as she made her maiden international goal on her 26th birthday. The USA got off to a fast start as defender and team captain Becky Sauerbrunn nearly opened the scoring off a corner kick in the third minute when she crashed into the box and allied with a great header that nervy off the crossbar.

Sauerbrunn was honored in her hometown before the game for earning 200 caps. Her streak of 215 games without a goal for the USA nearly came to an end on this opportunity. Casey Murphy, the USA’s custodian, easily stopped Ireland’s first-half opportunities, which included midfielder Katie McCabe’s long-range attempt in the eighth minute and a deflection off a low, bouncing ball in the 24th minute.

Murphy had to kick the ball away for a corner as it fell close to the goal after a drilled delivery into the box blasted the ball straight up into the air.

In the 43rd minute, Cook blasted a long ball into the box from at least 40 yards out that flew over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net to give the USA what would ultimately be the game-winning goal.

Cook’s goal made her the 117th member of the USWNT to score and the second defender to do it this year. The United States performed well to tighten up its defense in the second half after taking the lead.   The team did well to continue creating chances while ultimately depriving the visitors of any significant chances on goal.

They used all six of their substitutions, including five in the second half and defender Tierna Davidson. Who entered the game in the 29th minute for Sauerbrunn in a deliberate move to manage minutes. By the end of this game, every single one of the 11 players on the field was different from the starters from the United States 2-0 victory over Ireland four days prior.

USA Women Football World Cup Team Head coach Vlatko Andonovski made 6 deviations to the initial lineup from the teams’ April 8 meeting. Murphy became the ninth custodian in USWNT history to reach double-digit shutouts after recording her 10th career shutout.

In tallying to Hope Solo’s 102 shutouts, Briana Scurry’s 72, Alyssa Naeher’s 53, Nicole Barnhart’s 24, and Siri Mullinix’s 21. Mary Harvey’s 13, Saskia Webber’s 13, and Amy Allmann Griffin’s 10, she also joins Hope Solo’s 102 shutouts. On Sunday, July 9, the USWNT will play again when it faces Wales in their 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup Send-Off Match, sponsored by Visa.

Rundown for scoring goals:

United States — Alana Cook, 43:00:

Following a brief corner kick, Cook received the ball just past midfield towards the left side and, with no one pressing her. Fired a shot from at least 40 yards away that flew over the custodian. The custodian managed to get a hand on the ball, but it was not enough to prevent the ball from floating into the goal. IRL 0, USA 1,

NOTES ADDITIONAL:

As the 16th woman to play for the USWNT after giving birth to a child, defender Casey Krueger received her first cap on October 21, 2021, and her first since giving birth to her child in July of 2022. Women Football World Cup fans can buy Portugal vs USA Tickets from our website.

Tierna Davidson, a defender for Sauerbrunn, entered the game in the 29th minute, earning her 49th cap and her first since February 23, 2022, and successfully making a comeback to the pitch for the USA after hurting her ACL while practicing with the Chicago Red Stars in March 2022.

Veteran defender Kelley O’Hara, a two-time World Cup champion, also made a comeback from injury after missing the USA’s final game in the summer, starting and playing 45 minutes.

USWNT Midfielder:

Julie Ertz, played the entire second half of the USWNT’s second match back since the Olympics in Tokyo.

In her third appearance for the USWNT, 18-year-old Alyssa Thompson made her first start and played the whole 90 minutes. Mallory Swanson (formerly Pugh), who started for the USWNT against Sweden at the 2016 Olympics at the age of 18 years and 105 days, was the youngest player to do so before Thompson, who is just 18 years and 155 days old.

Since Tierna Davidson, then 19 years old, started for the USA against Chile in September 2018, Thompson was the first teenager to do so. The age disparity between starts in a USWNT match has never been greater than the one between Becky Sauerbrunn, who is almost 38 years old, and Thompson, who is 18 years old.

When Sauerbrunn made her USWNT debut on January 16, 2008, Thompson was three years old. In Carli Lloyd’s final match, in October 2021, when she was 39 years old, and Sophia Smith, 21. Both played against Korean Republic, the highest age disparity between starts was 18.

USWNT Record at St. Louis
