Guery, a Tokyo 2020 team jumping bronze medallist, faced the daunting task of delivering a flawless round to not only claim the prestigious Nations Cup trophy but also secure the sole qualifying spot for the highly anticipated Olympic Equestrian Eventing competition at Paris Olympic 2024.

Olympics in the Era of Rising Costs: No Test Event for Paris Olympic 2024 Equestrian Eventing Affected
The highly anticipated eventing competition at the 2024 Paris Olympics will not undergo a comprehensive trial run, according to the recent revelations at the FEI Eventing Forum. Unlike previous Olympic editions, which typically featured a full test event held at a slightly lower level than the main Games, Paris Olympic 2024 has opted out of this traditional practice. The decision stems from cost-cutting measures implemented by the organizers for the upcoming Games.
Test events have traditionally served as crucial preparatory platforms for officials to address any potential issues related to the field of play and logistical arrangements. These events also provide national governing bodies with valuable insights into the venue, which can significantly influence their selection and preparation strategies in the subsequent year.
Furthermore, the excitement and buzz surrounding Olympic test events often attract enthusiastic spectators, many of whom may be unfamiliar with the sport but are eager to witness the grandeur of the occasion.
Paris Olympic 2024 Equestrian Disciplines at Chateau de Versailles: Balancing Costs and Preparations
In the case of Paris Olympic 2024, the equestrian disciplines will be hosted at the prestigious Chateau de Versailles, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of France’s foremost tourist attractions. Consequently, the costs associated with constructing temporary arenas and restricting access to parts of the site during the test event would likely be substantial. Therefore, the decision to forgo a traditional test event aligns with the organizers’ objectives to streamline expenses.
However, GL Events Equestrian Sport, appointed as the organizers for the equestrian disciplines during the FEI General Assembly, will conduct a cross-country test event at Versailles. This event will be open to national federations and national Olympic committees, allowing them to ensure the functionality of the terrain and the planned pontoon crossings, as well as the effectiveness of the warm-up and cool-down areas.
Notably, the arena-based phases of the event will be held in spring 2024 at the established competition venue Fontainebleau, which will be equipped with the same footing as that intended for Versailles. This arrangement aims to familiarize officials with their responsibilities and tasks ahead of the Games.
Additionally, it was revealed at the FEI Eventing Forum that the initial horse inspection will not be accessible to the general public, contrary to the usual practice. For more updates on the latest developments in Paris Olympic 2024, we recommend referring to our comprehensive summary of last month’s General Assembly, including the proposed course maps.
Paris 2024 Olympic Equestrian Eventing: Adapted Preparations Amid Cost-Saving Measures
The absence of a test event for the eventing competition at the 2024 Paris Olympics is a result of cost-saving measures. However, alternative arrangements such as the cross-country test event at Versailles and the subsequent arena-based phases at Fontainebleau are in place to ensure the smooth execution of the Olympic Equestrian Eventing competition.

This announcement was made during the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) Sports Forum held in Lausanne. The delivery of the competition has been entrusted to GL Events. Renowned for their expertise in managing major horse shows, as reported by Horse and Hound.
To ensure smooth operations, the horses will be stabled based on their discipline rather than their nationalities. Additionally, there will be strict arrival and departure windows to facilitate efficient management. In an effort to accommodate those who have traveled long distances, organizers are considering utilizing the nearby Jardy venue as a base for early arrivals or extended stays.
The eventing horses will be the first to arrive on July 24, followed by the dressage horses on July 26. On July 29, the eventing horses will depart, allowing for disinfection of their stables before the arrival of the showjumpers on the following day. Paris Olympic 2024 organizers emphasize that this schedule ensures a “nice calm area” for the dressage horses, undisturbed by the departure of the eventers.
Prioritizing Horse Welfare and Streamlined Competitor Access at the FEI Sports Forum
Sabrina Ibanez, the secretary general of FEI, underscored the commitment to horse welfare during her end-of-day summary at the FEI Sports Forum. She stated, “In these 11 days of competition, the principle in mind has always been the welfare of the horse. That is why they have the stabling by discipline and not by National Federation. A virtual image of how the equestrian venue at Versailles for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will look. The historic Versailles venue, coupled with the commitment to reduce the Games’ carbon footprint by 50%, poses unique logistical challenges for the organizers. At the forum, additional information was shared regarding on- and off-site testing plans, as well as specific details about stabling for horses and lodging for support crews.
Stabling by Discipline: A Horse-Centric Approach at Versailles
To ensure optimal horse welfare, horses will be stabled by discipline rather than by nation, and careful attention will be given to arrival and departure schedules, allowing for efficient turnover. In addition, organizers are considering the utilization of the nearby Jardy venue as a base for participants who have traveled long distances and desire early arrival or extended stays. The eventing horses will be the first to arrive on 24 July, followed by the dressage horses on 26 July. The eventing horses will depart on 29 July, enabling their stables to be disinfected prior to the arrival of the showjumpers the next day. This strategic arrangement ensures a tranquil environment for the dressage horses after the eventing horses’ departure.
Emphasizing the paramount importance of horse welfare, FEI secretary general Sabrina Ibañez reiterated the reasoning behind discipline-based stabling rather than national federation-based stabling. A total of six arenas will be available, divided into three warm-up areas, with a designated one-way system in place to avoid horse crossings during critical moments near the 10-minute box and competition arena.
Tranquil Transitions: Eventing and Dressage Horses’ Arrival and Departure Schedule
Grooms will find accommodation in the newly constructed Huttopia eco-hostel, conveniently located a short 700-meter walk or cycle from the stables. Vets, on the other hand, will be staying in a hotel situated 2.5 kilometers away. The grooms’ accommodation features double and triple rooms as well as chalets, allocated based on gender, nation, and discipline. Dujardin’s passion, competitiveness, and strong-willed nature remain, but the experience of pregnancy has fundamentally altered her perspective. It has made her realize that her sport is just a game. But a sport while having a child is real life. This newfound realization has deepened her appreciation for what truly matters. And she recognizes that she can always return to her sport when the time is right. And we can expect to see her at Olympic Paris.
Dujardin has set her sights on returning to competitive horse riding at the 2023 European Championships, aiming to compete in her fourth Olympic Games at France Olympic. Equestrian Dressage Champion Carl Hester Looks Ahead To Paris 2024
Following his success at the Olympic Games, Carl Hester is the acclaimed Dressage rider from Sark. He has set his sights on the Paris 2024 Games. Despite being 54 years old, Hester remains a formidable competitor for Team GB. He is particularly excited about his young horse, which he believes will be an excellent prospect for the upcoming Games.
Reflecting on his bronze medal win in the team Dressage final in Tokyo, alongside his teammates Lottie Fry and Charlotte Dujardin, Hester noted that the absence of an audience during the competition worked to the advantage of younger and less experienced horses.
Overcoming the challenges of heat and humidity posed the greatest difficulty for the horses during the Olympics. While riders can mentally prepare themselves, it’s a different story for equine athletes. Carl Hester and Charlotte Dujardin both rode young horses this time, which added an extra layer of complexity.

Recently, Isabell shared the news of her top horse, Bella Rose, retiring. As the reigning world champion, plans were made for the 17-year-old Belissimo M mare to perform at Aachen CHIO this month. However, unexpected complications arose when Bella Rose underwent colic surgery last week, thwarting their anticipated participation.
Isabell has also enjoyed tremendous success with her top mare, Weihegold OLD. Together, they have triumphed in three World Cup competitions and secured triple European gold in 2017. At the recent European Championships, they earned team gold and individual silver. However, as Weihegold OLD is now 16 years old, it is unlikely that she will compete in future championships.
As Isabell looks towards her future medal prospects, she places her hopes on two talented horses. The first is Quantaz, an 11-year-old mount who will participate in the upcoming Aachen competition. The second is Superb, a promising nine-year-old mare. Isabell has expressed confidence in Superb, believing that she has the potential to follow in the footsteps of her retiring partner, Bella Rose.

Who currently sits at 145 points after securing second place at Montelibretti and sixth place at Chatsworth. Meanwhile, Spain and the Netherlands are closely trailing with 110 and 115 points, respectively. The upcoming leg of the series, hosted at Ireland’s Millstreet Horse Trials, will offer an opportunity for teams to narrow the gap and vie for a higher standing.
The Bonus Opportunity:
Apart from the team slots allocated through the FEI Nations Cup series. There is an intriguing bonus chance for nations to secure a place at the Olympics. This opportunity involves a combination of luck and circumstance. Once all the team slots have been allocated. Each nation will need to demonstrate their competence to the FEI and IOC. Specifically, they must prove that their country possesses a minimum of three horses. And riders who have already achieved the necessary MERs (Minimum Eligibility Requirements) to compete at the Olympics.
Olympic Opening Ceremony Tickets | Paris Olympic 2024 Tickets | Paris Olympic Tickets
While these horses and riders may not necessarily be the ones representing the nation at the Games. This requirement serves as a token of assurance that the nation has the capacity to send athletes to the Olympics. Failure to meet this deadline and fulfill. The competence criteria will result in the team slot being revoked and replaced with an individual slot.
A Rare Yet Promising Possibility for Developing Eventing Nations
Furthermore, the team slot will be reassigned to a ‘composite team,’ a term used to describe. The nation with the best combined FEI score derived from the aggregate total of its three highest-ranked horses and riders in the world rankings. Although this scenario rarely occurs, it remains a possibility, particularly for developing eventing nations who have secured team slots.

Due to the widely-condemned invasion of Ukraine, Russian and Belarusian athletes have been unable to participate in Olympic Paris FEI events. It is by the International Olympic Committee’s recommendations. The IOC has expressed its intention to find a pathway for athletes from both countries to return to international competitions under strict conditions of neutrality. This development has sparked controversy in Ukraine and has even led to threats of a boycott of the Paris 2024.
Beletsky acknowledged Tuganov’s lifelong dedication to participating in major sports events, including the Olympic Games. And he highlighted his extensive experience and contributions to his country. Beletsky emphasized that time is of the essence for Tuganov. It is because his sports career has a limited number of years remaining.

This development comes at a crucial juncture, as the qualification process for Olympic 2024 is already underway in various sports. The FEI’s ban, which was implemented on March 2 last year, currently prohibits Russian and Belarusian athletes, horses, and officials from participating in FEI events. Dates and Schedule: Mark Your Calendars for Olympic Equestrian Eventing
Jean Morel kicked off the presentation by announcing the dates for all equestrian competitions, including Modern Pentathlon. He also revealed the names of the Course Designers for Cross-Country (Pierre Le Goupil) and Jumping (Santiago Varela and Gregory Bodo). The comprehensive schedule for both the Olympic and Paralympic Games spans from 26 July to 7 September. However, the timing for Para Dressage may be subject to change based on final entries and participating nations.
Morel proceeded to showcase venue maps for the 11-day competition, outlining the locations of stables, the field of play, warm-up arenas, and Cross-Country start and finish lines. It was emphasized that all plans were designed with the welfare of the horses as a top priority.
To ensure efficient organization, stables will be categorized by discipline, with separate areas for Eventing (first to arrive and depart the venue), Dressage, and Jumping. Close proximity to the stables are dedicated facilities such as the Veterinary clinic, treatment boxes, farriers, and wash areas. Three warm-up areas will be available, which can be split into six if needed.
Course Designers Revealed: Cross-Country and Jumping at Paris 2024
Morel then delved into the details of the Cross-Country course, which spans a distance of 5.3km and has an optimum time of 9 minutes and 18 seconds. The course comprises 25 obstacles, including 3 Water Jumps and 2 Pontoons. All horse inspections for every discipline will take place in a designated area.
Horse transportation was the next topic discussed, with specific details provided for the arrival of horses. Eventing horses are scheduled to arrive on 24 July, followed by Dressage horses on 26 July, Jumping horses on 30 July, and Para Dressage horses on 31 August. To avoid congestion, horse arrivals will be scheduled in designated time slots. The Mortemets Parking will serve as the first security checkpoint, followed by a second one near the Grooms accommodation before the horses proceed to the stables. Notably, Eventing and Jumping horses will not be present at the venue simultaneously, as the Jumping horses will arrive the day after the Eventing horses depart. An amazing plan was darkened by a tragic fortune for the equine practitioner. The horse Silvia was riding tripped sadistically. Throwing her to the ground before falling on top of her and crushing her. These few seconds upturned everything that Silvia knew until then. She is in pain now from a thoughtful lesion. On the central part of her cervical spinal cord from C3 to C5. Four of her ribs are cracked, three thoracic vertebrae and she had a huge pulmonary contusion. Silvia became a quadriplegic, totally paralyzed from the neckline down.
Airlifted to Galway University Hospital, where she remained in intensive care until after her back cord fusion and decompression. I had to stay numerous months hospitalized in Ireland. Before being repatriated to the USA to continue my care and restoration. My new condition was hard to accept. I could scarcely walk, not raise my arms above my waist. But still, I left the hospital early against medical orders. I’m the stubborn type who shares Silvia with us. A strength of charisma that will take her to the maximum international level in para-dressage.
