Stellato-Dudek/Deschamps Dominate Pairs Short Program and Set Sights on Winter Olympic 2026

The 2024 Finlandia Trophy, a premier event on the ISU Grand Prix of Winter Olympic Figure Skating circuit, kicked off with a dazzling performance from Canada’s Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxima Deschamps. The pair, who are the reigning world champions in pairs Winter Olympic figure skating, stunned the crowd at the Helsinki Ice Hall on Friday, 15 November, with their Beyoncé-inspired short program to Crazy in Love. The program showcased their supreme skill, artistry, and connection, establishing them as the team to beat as they aim for Olympic glory in Winter Olympic Milano Cortina 2026.

A Strong Start: Stellato-Dudek/Deschamps Dominate the Ice

From the moment Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxima Deschamps took to the ice in Helsinki, they were in a league of their own. The pair’s Winter Olympic Figure Skating short program was a masterclass in technical precision, synchronized artistry, and dynamic energy. Their Beyoncé-inspired routine, which has met with widespread acclaim for its creativity and flair, earn them an impressive 75.89 points. While this was just under two points shy of their career-best score achieve at the 2024 World Championships, it marked a significant improvement in their performance from their previous outing at Skate Canada International earlier this season, where they earned a score of 73.35 points.

Stellato-Dudek and Deschamps’ flawless execution of all their elements contributed significantly to their strong standing. The technical panel awarded them level fours on all their elements, and the judges were equally generous, awarding high grades of execution (GOE) for their key elements. The Canadian pair’s opening move, a level-four triple twist lift, was particularly exceptional, earning them their highest GOE score of the night. Following that, they executed a stunning Group 4 lift, a throw triple loop, and a smooth death spiral, each of which garnered high praise from the judges.

Their score of 75.89 is a significant improvement on the 73.35 points they earned earlier this season, reflecting the progress they’ve made in the past few weeks. Stellato-Dudek expressed her satisfaction with the performance, saying, this year, we’ve put out pretty decent short programs, but this is by far our best one.

The Road to the Winter Olympic: Stellato-Dudek’s Ambitious Winter Olympic 2026 Goal

Stellato-Dudek’s goal of making her Winter Olympic 2026 at the age of 43 is already making headlines, and for good reason. Should she compete in the Winter Olympic Milano Cortina 2026, she would be just shy of 43 years old, making her one of the oldest athletes in history to compete in the Winter Olympic figure skating events.

While the notion of an Olympic debut at that age is rare, it’s clear that Stellato-Dudek and Deschamps have what it takes to defy the typical age expectations in Winter Olympic figure skating. After taking a break from the sport for several years, Stellato-Dudek returned to the competitive circuit in 2017 with Deschamps. Since their return, the pair has been on an upward trajectory, steadily climbing the ranks of the ISU Grand Prix circuit. You Can Read Ilia Malinin: A Rising Star in Winter Olympic Figure Skating

Their 2024 World Championship victory was a pivotal moment in their careers, but Stellato-Dudek’s eyes are now firmly fixed on the ultimate prize—the Winter Olympic. She has been vocal about her desire to compete in the Olympic and is undeterred by the challenges of competing at an age when many athletes retire. I’ve always dreamed of representing Canada at the Olympic, and now, I feel more motivated than ever to make it happen, Stellato-Dudek remarked in a recent interview.

The pair’s success at the Finlandia Trophy suggests that their Olympic aspirations are within reach. Stellato-Dudek’s experience and maturity, combined with Deschamps’ innovative choreography and technical expertise, make them a force to be reckoned with in the pairs Winter Olympic figure skating competition.

The Evolution of Their Free Program: A New Chapter in their Routine

While the short program at the Finlandia Trophy was a resounding success, Stellato-Dudek/Deschamps are not resting on their laurels. According to Deschamps, they have already made substantial improvements to their free program since their last Grand Prix appearance. We’ve made some changes to the free program, Deschamps said. We changed the order of elements and adjusted the choreography sequence. It should look pretty different, and we hope to show a good version of it on Sunday.

This continual refinement of their program showcases their commitment to improving every aspect of their performances. Their free program will be a crucial element of their overall score, and given their work in the past few weeks, they are expected to present an even stronger and more polished performance in the coming days.

Stellato-Dudek also shared that she and Deschamps had focused particularly on improving their difficult elements from Skate Canada International, a competition that revealed some minor inconsistencies. These challenges are expected to be addressed during their free program performance at Finlandia.

The Race to the Winter Olympics: Ghilardi/Ambrosini and Pavlova/Sviatchenko’s Quest for Glory

While Stellato-Dudek and Deschamps took a commanding lead in the short program at Finlandia Trophy 2024, they are far from complacent. Their rivals are no slouches, and the competition remains fierce. The Italian pair of Rebecca Ghilardi and Filippo Ambrosini are close behind, sitting in second place with a score of 67.43 points, over eight points behind the Canadians. Ghilardi and Ambrosini, who have been steadily improving over the years, are strong contenders in the world of pairs Winter Olympic figure skating. Their short program at the Finlandia Trophy was clean and elegant, demonstrating their technical prowess, but they are still chasing the level of performance that Stellato-Dudek and Deschamps have set.

In third place, with a score of 61.29 points, is the Hungarian team of Maria Pavlova and Alexei Sviatchenko. This pair is another rising force in pairs skating and has been improving steadily. Their program, while not as technically refined as the top two pairs, shows promise. Their strong lift technique and throw elements are noteworthy, and they will be hoping to improve their standing with a strong free program performance.

The Growing Rivalry: The Impact of Stellato-Dudek/Deschamps on Global Pairs Winter Olympic figure skating

Stellato-Dudek and Deschamps have not only established themselves as leading figures in the sport, but they have also set a benchmark for other pairs to strive for. Their combination of flawless technical execution and emotional performance has redefined what it means to be at the top of the pairs Winter Olympic figure skating game.

One of the most notable aspects of their skating is their chemistry and partnership. Their ability to skate in perfect harmony, making their lifts and throws look effortless, is a testament to their years of training and dedication. What sets them apart is their ability to convey emotion through their movements. In their Crazy in Love short program, their performance was not only about technical mastery but also about connecting with the audience. It’s this combination of artistry and athleticism that makes them such a compelling pair to watch.

Their influence on global pairs skating is evident in the increasing number of rising stars who are incorporating emotional storytelling into their routines. Stellato-Dudek and Deschamps have helped elevate the artistic side of the sport while maintaining a strict focus on technical precision.

Looking Ahead: The Road to Winter Olympic Milano Cortina 2026

As the Winter Olympic Milano Cortina 2026 game draw closer, all eyes will be on Stellato-Dudek and Deschamps. Their impressive short program at Finlandia Trophy has solidified their position as one of the top teams in the sport, and their sights are set firmly on the Olympic.

With the Winter Olympic 2026 looming, Deanna Stellato-Dudek is acutely aware that time is ticking. But as she continues to perform at a high level, her age is no longer seen as a disadvantage. Instead, it has become a symbol of determination and perseverance. Her goal of becoming an Olympic debutant at 43 may seem unconventional, but if their performance at Finlandia Trophy is anything to go by, she and Deschamps have the skills, work ethic, and passion to make history.

Lucas Braathen: The Samba Spirit of Brazilian Alpine Skiing at Winter Olympic Milano Cortina 2026

In the midst of the stunning Austrian Alps, a place revered by ski racing enthusiasts worldwide, one particular moment in the season opener at Sölden defied expectations and captured the hearts of everyone in attendance. The iconic Rettenbach Glacier, home to the World Cup’s giant slalom a defining stage of Winter Olympic alpine skiing—witnessed an extraordinary celebration that was far from typical for such an event.

Rather than the usual cheers or solemn nods of acknowledgement, the crowd was treat to an impromptu Samba dance on snow, performed by none other than Lucas Pinheiro Braathen, the 24-year-old Brazilian skier who has become a sensation in the sport. Braathen, whose move to represent Brazil has already turned heads in the Winter Olympic alpine skiing world, celebrated his strong performance in a way that blended his love for skiing with his Brazilian heritage, creating a moment of pure joy that transcended the usual competitive atmosphere of the event.

Winter Olympic 2026: Braathen’s Samba and Brazil’s Bold Skiing Future

Braathen, in a display of pure joy and emotion, clicked out of his ski bindings after delivering a breathtaking second-run performance, which briefly saw him atop the leaderboard. He then broke into a spontaneous Samba, delighting the 17,000-plus spectators who had gathered to watch the thrilling giant slalom. For a moment, it seemed as if Brazil had invaded the world of alpine skiing in the most unexpected of ways – through samba rhythms and ski boots.

While Braathen ultimately finished in fourth place, behind three of his former Norwegian teammates – Alexander Steen Olsen, Atle Lie McGrath, and Henrik Kristofferson – it was the dance that stole the show. The result marked a remarkable debut for Braathen as a competitor for Brazil, a country known for its prowess in soccer, volleyball, and surfing but not exactly associated with winter sports. It was a symbolic milestone for a skater who had switched allegiances and was now bringing a touch of Brazilian flair to the snow-covered slopes of the Alps.

A Personal Milestone: The Start of a New Chapter

When asked by POWDER magazine if the race and subsequent celebration represent a fitting start to his new chapter in Winter Olympic Alpine skiing racing, Braathen was overwhelm with emotion. I don’t really know how to explain that – moments like that are indescribable, he said, holding back tears. Words can never describe the emotions. It’s a package of so much pain, so much sacrifice, and a roller coaster of a year trying to find who I am. I’m so proud of what I achieved today, and I hope to do a whole lot more.

Braathen’s heartfelt response encapsulated the depth of his journey: one marked not only by athletic achievement but also by personal growth, pain, and transformation. For the Brazilian skier, this was more than just a race; it was a statement of who he had become after stepping away from the sport and overcoming personal and professional challenges. He had spent the past year seeking clarity, grappling with identity, and making tough decisions. That moment on the snow was a symbol of his emotional rebirth and a newfound sense of purpose.

The Dual Identity: Braathen’s Journey from Norway to Brazil

Born to a Norwegian father and a Brazilian mother from São Paulo, Lucas Braathen’s life and skiing career were always defined by duality. He was raised in Norway, where he joined the Norwegian Ski Team and quickly made a name for himself on the World Cup circuit. With five World Cup victories to his name (three slaloms and two giant slaloms) and the 2023 slalom title under his belt at just 22 years old, Braathen seemed to have a bright future ahead as part of Norway’s Winter Olympic alpine skiing elite.

However, Braathen’s relationship with the Norwegian Ski Federation began to sour after a public dispute regarding sponsorship rights. The outspoken athlete, who had grown increasingly disillusioned with the restrictive nature of the system, made the shocking decision to retire at the age of 23. This move was unprecedented and sent shockwaves through the Winter Olympic Alpine community, as Braathen was at the peak of his career. He sat out the entire 2023-2024 season, reflecting on his future and what he truly wanted from his career. You Can Read Winter Olympic: Milano Cortina 2026 Alpine Skiing Events

Breaking Barriers: Braathen’s Bold Decision to Represent Brazil

In an unexpected twist, Braathen announced that he would return to the Winter Olympic sport, but this time under the flag of Brazil, his mother’s homeland. The decision was not one he took lightly, as it required a complete shift in mindset and identity. Competing for Brazil was not just about the thrill of representing a new country; it was about breaking away from the pressures he had felt in Norway and forging his own path.

Competing for Brazil is something I’ve always dreamed of, Braathen shared after the race. I’m proud to represent my mother’s country and be part of a movement of Brazilian athletes in winter sports. It’s exciting to be able to put a Brazilian flag on the leaderboard in a Winter Olympic sport that is so traditionally dominated by countries like Austria, Norway, and Switzerland.

Milano Cortina 2026 Tickets

The announcement took many by surprise, but it was also a decision that showcased Braathen’s willingness to challenge the status quo. With Brazil not traditionally known for its winter sports prowess, his decision to represent the South American country made headlines and inspired a fresh wave of interest in Winter Olympic Alpine skiing from non-traditional nations.

A Full-Circle Moment: Braathen’s Emotional Return to Sölden

Braathen’s debut race for Brazil was held on the very same slopes where, just a year ago, he had made headlines with his unexpected retirement announcement. The venue had already been significant in his career: it was here, in October 2020, that he achieved his first-ever World Cup victory. The Sölden race thus became more than just another race in his career—it was a full-circle moment, both personal and professional.

On a sun-splashed day on the Rettenbach Glacier, Braathen was on fire during his first run, leading the field after posting an impressive time that placed him at the top of the leaderboard. For a brief moment, it appeared that the Brazilian skier might snatch the victory, sending shockwaves through the sport. While he eventually dropped to fourth place after his second run, the performance still represented a powerful statement: Braathen was back, and he was skiing at the highest level, no matter the country he represented.

Breaking Barriers: Braathen’s Role in Transforming Brazilian Winter Olympic Sports

Despite the fierce competition from his former Norwegian teammates, Braathen remained upbeat and positive. His decision to race for Brazil did not create any animosity between him and the Norwegian team, which was evident in the camaraderie shown at the finish line. No hard feelings, said Atle Lie McGrath, one of Braathen’s former teammates. He’s a great skier, and we are happy for him. It’s exciting to see him back, and it’s exciting to see a Brazilian flag on the World Cup leaderboard.

This was more than just a race it was a breakthrough for both Braathen and Brazilian winter sports. Brazil has never been known for its winter sports achievements, but Braathen’s success in Sölden has already started to change that narrative. For the Brazilian skier, this was the beginning of something new, something bigger than just Winter Olympic Alpine skiing he was out to challenge the perception of what it means to be an athlete from a tropical country.

Braathen’s Vision for Brazilian Winter Olympic Sports: Aiming for More Than Medals

As the countdown to the Winter Olympic Milano Cortina 2026 continues, Braathen is eyeing the Games with optimism and determination. His decision to switch countries and compete for Brazil has reignited his passion for the sport, and he is determined to make his mark on the international stage once again.

The Winter Olympic 2026 will be a critical moment for both Braathen and Brazilian winter sports, as the country has never won a medal in the Winter Games. Brazil’s best result to date was a ninth-place finish by Isabel Clark Ribeiro in snowboard cross at the 2006 Torino Olympics. However, with Braathen’s arrival on the scene, many believe that Brazil’s chances of medaling have improved significantly.

I’m here to change things, Braathen said, his voice filled with emotion. I want to inspire people to follow their own path, to pursue what makes them happy. I’m not here just to ski; I’m here to challenge perspectives, to show people that anything is possible, even if you’re from a place where winter sports are not the norm.

The Road to Winter Olympic Milano Cortina 2026: Lucas Braathen’s Journey to Glory

The Brazilian Olympic Committee and the Brazilian Winter Sports Federation have already expressed their full support for Braathen as he prepares for the Winter Olympic 2026 Games. We are committed to supporting him and giving him the resources he needs to succeed, said Gustavo Haidar, a representative of Team Brazil. Brazil has never had a skier of his caliber before, and we are excited for the opportunities that lie ahead.

For Braathen, the Winter Olympic 2026 represent the culmination of a long journey—a journey that began with his decision to leave the Norwegian Ski Team and embrace a new identity as a Brazilian skier. With a growing fan base, both in Brazil and internationally, Braathen is poised to make an even bigger impact as he aims for the podium in Winter Olympic Milano Cortina 2026.

The Growing Fanbase and Support for Brazilian Winter Olympic Sports

Braathen’s move to represent Brazil has sparked the creation of a rapidly expanding fan club that is passionately supporting the skier’s journey. Fans from all over the world have flocked to his races, donning Brazilian flags and showing their support for the athlete. It’s a phenomenon that is as much about Braathen’s personality as it is about his Winter Olympic Alpine skiing talent.

Darka Sefcik, a ski racing enthusiast from Slovakia, joined the Brazilian fan club after seeing Braathen’s performance in Sölden. It was an incredible experience, Sefcik said. Lucas has won over everyone with his personality. His family is incredibly supportive, and his new team is amazing. I think he’ll have a lot greater memories ahead of him.

Braathen himself is deeply grateful for the support he’s received from fans, both Brazilian and international. It’s incredible to see Brazilian flags in the stands in Austria, he said. Fans have brought pastries from Brazil, and it’s just so special to feel that connection, to know that people believe in me and support me.

Winter Olympic Milano Cortina 2026: Slalom and the Future of Brazilian Skiing

As Braathen shifts his focus back to his favorite discipline—slalom—he is eager to compete in upcoming races in Levi, Finland, and Gurgl, Austria. His enthusiasm for slalom is evident, as he likens it to dancing—a fitting analogy for an athlete whose samba moves captured the attention of the world.

Slalom is a Brazilian’s dream, right? Braathen said with a grin. It’s fast, technical, and has rhythm—kind of like dancing. I’m excited to get back to slalom and be 100 percent myself, unrestricted. When you let me go, I can achieve great things.

As the season progresses and the Winter Olympic draw closer, all eyes will be on Lucas Braathen. His emotional return to ski racing and his decision to represent Brazil have already made waves, and it is clear that his journey has only just begun. Whether or not he wins a medal in Winter Olympic Milano Cortina 2026, Braathen is already a trailblazer, a symbol of perseverance, and a beacon of hope for athletes worldwide.

Yarnold Urges Brits to Be Brave: A Call to Action for Skeleton Athletes Ahead of Winter Olympic 2026

Double Olympic Champion Lizzy Yarnold has long been a trailblazer for British Winter Olympic skeleton, and her words now carry even more weight as the sport enters a new chapter leading into the Winter Olympic 2026. Speaking ahead of the new World Cup season in PyeongChang, South Korea, Yarnold shared her insights and reflections on her iconic Olympic victories, offering valuable advice to the next generation of British sliders.

As the new season kicks off in PyeongChang, the venue of Yarnold’s remarkable second Olympic gold in 2018, six British athletes will be hoping to emulate her success. Yarnold’s legacy looms large over the British skeleton program, and the pressure is on to deliver performances worthy of her trailblazing success.

The Challenge of PyeongChang: A Track That Demands Bravery

The Winter Olympic skeleton track at PyeongChang holds a special place in the hearts of winter sports fans, particularly British ones, due to Yarnold’s unforgettable performance in 2018. For many, the track represents not just a challenge of skill, but a test of willpower. The track is technically difficult but a huge joy to compete at, Yarnold explained, recalling the intense, high-speed nature of the run.

For any athlete, PyeongChang can be a track that demands complete commitment. There are a few places to get caught out early on, Yarnold pointed out, referring to the notorious corner 2 and the chicane further down the track. These tricky sections require a fine balance between precision and speed, demanding total focus. However, when the track flows, it can also offer a moment of pure bliss as athletes are propelled toward the finish line, the result of perfect execution.

It’s all about commitment in PyeongChang – and believing in yourself, Yarnold emphasized. The bravest will come out on top. For Yarnold, this was true of her own Olympic success, and she believes it will be the same for this new generation of athletes. PyeongChang: A Crucial Venue for Preparing for Winter Olympic Glory

The track’s unique combination of technical challenges and thrilling moments of speed is why Yarnold is so passionate about its inclusion in the World Cup circuit. Having a World Cup in South Korea is an ideal experience for top-level skeleton athletes, she noted. New challenges and, hopefully, new challengers. For the British team, this return to the PyeongChang venue marks an opportunity to test their mettle against the world’s best, and Yarnold sees it as an ideal way for them to prepare for the upcoming Winter Olympic Milano Cortina 2026.

Yarnold also reflected on how the PyeongChang venue is perfect for athletes looking to sharpen their skills ahead of major international tournaments. “Keeping recent Olympic tracks on the circuit is a sustainable way to maintain the sport, so it’s great to see PyeongChang on the World Cup calendar,” she said. This sustainability, she believes, ensures that athletes are continually pushed to perform at their highest level.

The Beauty and Challenge of PyeongChang

Beyond its technical challenges, PyeongChang is a venue that stands out for its sheer beauty and the sense of calm it offers amidst the intense competition. It’s an amazing venue, Yarnold said, describing the warm-up track at the top of the Winter Olympic skeleton run, which boasts world-class facilities and a stunning view of snow-capped hills. Despite battling illness during her last visit to PyeongChang, Yarnold recalls the experience fondly. Even though I was ill during my last visit, I can still recall the feeling of the icy cold air flowing into my lungs. What a beautiful place.

For Yarnold, PyeongChang represents not just a physical challenge, but also an emotional connection to a place where she made history. Watching the current athletes compete at the same venue brings back a flood of memories for the two-time Olympic gold medallist. What an unforgettable experience, she said, adding, I can’t wait to watch the racing!

Lizzy Yarnold’s PyeongChang Triumph: Overcoming Pressure to Secure Olympic Glory

While Yarnold’s reflections on PyeongChang speak to the challenges of the venue, they also serve as a reminder of her own moment of triumph in 2018. That year, Yarnold cemented her place in British Olympic history by becoming the nation’s most successful Winter Olympic. The 29-year-old was already a gold medallist from Sochi 2014, but to win a second gold in PyeongChang was the culmination of years of determination and sacrifice.

Milano Cortina 2026 Tickets | Winter Olympic 2026 Tickets| Winter Olympic Opening Ceremony Tickets

The race itself was super tense, Yarnold recalled. Anything could happen, and Janine Flock was ahead going into the final run, with just 0.02 seconds separating us. For any athlete, performing under such intense pressure would seem like an almost insurmountable challenge. but Yarnold thrived. In the final run, she delivered the performance of her career, and when it mattered most, she came through. Racing is all about grit and never giving up, and the Winter Olympic in 2018 was just that! she exclaimed.

A Moment of Triumph and Camaraderie: Yarnold and Deas’ PyeongChang Podium Celebration

Yarnold’s final run in PyeongChang was not just a technical masterpiece—it was a triumph of character. She had been battling illness throughout the competition, but when the pressure was at its peak, she produced a near-perfect run. Somehow, I performed my best run in Run 4 and smashed it. Winning had never felt so sweet, she said, reflecting on the immense satisfaction of overcoming adversity to secure the victory.

The joy and relief she felt after crossing the finish line were magnified by the moment she shared with teammate Laura Deas, who took the bronze medal. I’ll never forget the moment Laura and I realised we’d be on the podium together, Yarnold said. Laura winning her phenomenal bronze Olympic medal and I’d managed to back up my previous gold medal with another.

It was a moment of true camaraderie, and the two British athletes embraced each other in sheer awe. We hugged each other and just shouted out in awe, relief, and so much pride. It was a total dream come true! The success of both athletes was not just a personal triumph but also a reflection of the strength of British Winter Olympic skeleton and the deep camaraderie they shared as teammates.

Lizzy Yarnold: A Lasting Legacy of Inspiration for Future Winter Olympic Skeleton Athletes

As the Winter Olympic Milano Cortina 2026 approach, Yarnold’s impact on the sport of skeleton remains profound. Her story is not just one of personal glory, but one of determination, bravery, and the will to succeed. She set a new benchmark for British skeleton athletes and proved that, with hard work and commitment, anything is possible.

While Yarnold’s name will forever be etched in Olympic history, her legacy goes beyond her medals. As a mentor to the current crop of athletes, she continues to inspire the next generation. “The bravest will come out on top,” Yarnold’s words ring true for the athletes of today, and her advice carries weight as they prepare for the challenges ahead. For British skeleton, Yarnold’s example is a constant source of motivation as athletes strive to achieve their own Olympic dreams.

Looking Forward: The Road to Winter Olympic Milano Cortina 2026

While Yarnold has moved on from her competitive career, her influence on British skeleton remains steadfast. The sport, particularly in the UK, is now looking ahead to the next Olympic cycle, with an eye on the Winter Olympic Milano Cortina 2026 games. For the athletes currently competing in the World Cup season, the goal is clear: to follow in Yarnold’s footsteps and bring home Olympic glory once again.

As the World Cup season kicks off in PyeongChang, the stage is set for a new generation of athletes to rise to the occasion. With Yarnold’s legacy looming large, the British team is determined to prove that it can continue to compete at the highest level. The pressure is on, but Yarnold’s message remains clear: Be brave, trust yourself, and never give up.

In this article, we will explore the life and career of Jutta Leerdam, shedding light on aspects of her training, victories, personal life, and ambitions that may not be widely known. From her early days in Winter Olympic Speed skating to her current status as one of the sport’s leading athletes, Leerdam’s story is one of perseverance, ambition, and a relentless drive to improve.

Early Beginnings: From Field Hockey to Winter Olympic Speed Skating

Like many Dutch athletes, Jutta Leerdam’s introduction to sports was diverse. Born in the picturesque town of ‘s-Gravenzande in the Netherlands, Jutta initially engaged in field hockey, a popular sport in the country. However, her true passion was discovered when she first put on a pair of skates at the age of 11. The cold winter months in the Netherlands, where ponds and lakes freeze over, provided the perfect environment for young Jutta to embrace Winter Olympic speed skating.

It didn’t take long for her natural talent to shine. The young Winter Olympic speed skater quickly progressed, impressing coaches with her explosive speed and agility on the ice. Over the years, Leerdam’s love for the sport grew, and she eventually focused all her energy on becoming a professional speed skater.

Rising Through the Ranks: European Championship Glory

Leerdam’s breakthrough came in 2020, when she won her first major international title at the European Speed Skating Championships in the 1000m event. At just 21 years old, Jutta demonstrated maturity and skill far beyond her years. Despite nursing an injury at the time, she skated to victory, confirming her place as one of the rising stars in the sport.

Her performance at the 2020 European Championships was only the beginning. That same year, she helped the Dutch team defend their Team Sprint title at the World Single Distances Championships in Salt Lake City. The gold in the 1000m at the same competition was a personal milestone, solidifying her reputation as a sprinter to watch on the world stage. Leerdam’s rise to prominence culminated in her participation at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic. As one of the top contenders in the 1000m race, Leerdam entered the competition with high hopes. While she had set ambitious goals for herself, a silver medal in the 1000m event was still an outstanding achievement, placing her among the top skaters in the world.

Though proud of her Olympic performance, Leerdam admitted that she felt a mix of emotions after the race. While silver was a prestigious result, it fell short of her expectations. It wasn’t the time I had set for myself, she remarked in a post-race interview. Her competitive spirit and drive to be the best were evident in her words. She knew she could achieve more, and the silver medal only fueled her determination to pursue gold at future competitions, including the Winter Olympic Milano Cortina 2026 Games.

Jutta Leerdam’s Career Decisions: A Path to Personal Growth and Winter Olympic Glory

One of the most significant decisions in Leerdam’s career came in 2020 when she made the bold move of leaving Team Reggeborgh to start her own Winter Olympic Speed skating team, Team World stream. This transition was partly driven by personal and professional goals, as she sought more control over her training environment and strategy. However, the move was also prompted by her desire to continue growing as an athlete and pushing the boundaries of her potential.

In the years following, Leerdam went on to join the Jumbo-Visma Winter Olympic Skating Team, one of the most prestigious teams in Dutch Winter Olympic speed skating. There, she worked with head coach Jac Orie, sharing attention with other Dutch champions like Jorrit Bergsma and Thomas Krol. However, this collaboration was short-lived, as Leerdam parted ways with the team in 2023, seeking more personalized support.

In a social media post, Leerdam explained that she had decided to go solo for a while, focusing on her individual growth. She spoke about the importance of narrowing her focus and refining every aspect of her training. As a result, she began working again with coach Kosta Poltavets, who had played a significant role in her earlier development. Leerdam also joined Team Novus, an international training group led by former top skaters Michel Mulder and Daniel Greig. This new chapter in her career was characterized by a renewed sense of purpose and commitment to her craft.

Cha Junhwan: Crafting a Legacy for Winter Olympic Milano Cortina 2026

Every new Winter Olympic figure skating season brings with it a fresh opportunity for athletes to experiment with their routines, refine their competitive programs, and, in some cases, explore new artistic avenues. While the short program and free skate remain the core of a skater’s competitive efforts, the exhibition gala routine also holds significance. It’s a chance for skaters to express themselves in different ways—either by reusing old fan favorites or stepping outside their comfort zone to try something new. For Cha Junhwan, a rising star from South Korea, this season marks a particularly exciting creative shift, as he works with ice dance legend Guillaume Cizeron for the first time.

Cha Junhwan’s Exhibition Program: A Bold New Collaboration with Guillaume Cizeron

Cha’s new exhibition program, set to Loïc Nottet’s Mr/Mme, marks a departure from the familiar. The French song, with its unique rhythm and melody, is something Cha has never worked with before. The choreography, however, is what truly sets this routine apart. It was crafted by none other than Cizeron, the world and Winter Olympic champion ice dancer known for his fluid, expressive style. This collaboration has given Cha the opportunity to explore a new approach to his skating one that challenges him to move differently, embrace a new musicality, and expand his artistic range.

While Cha has worked with his main choreographer, Shae-Lynn Bourne, for several years—creating a distinct competitive identity—this exhibition program has provided an opportunity for him to experiment. Working with Guillaume is very different, and I think a big challenge, Cha said during an interview at Winter Olympic Figure Skating Canada International, where he placed third in his first Grand Prix of the season. I’ve been with Shae-Lynn for a long time and for the exhibition program, I wanted to try something new, a different style I could learn.

A New Artistic Partnership: Cha Junhwan and Guillaume Cizeron’s Creative Collaboration

Cha continued to explain that the Mr/Mme program, with its French flair and distinctive rhythm, was a departure from his usual style. I never tried a French song before, so it was really new for me, he said. The way the program goes, the style, it’s very different from what I used to do. It was enjoyable, and it really contributed to my training. I also love the program.

The two Winter Olympic Figure skating first crossed paths during an exhibition show, and despite being relatively new to each other, Cha found himself drawn to Cizeron’s artistry. I met Guillaume at a show, and we had a casual conversation.  He asked me if I needed any help or if there was something we could work on, and I said I would love to, Cha recalled. Taking the initiative, Cha later reached out to Cizeron via Instagram, and the collaboration began. Before starting this season, I just sent him a message saying, ‘I really want to work with you, so if you have time, can we make the time?’ And that was the start. Although the time spent working on the Mr/Mme routine was brief—less than a week—Cha found the experience invaluable. I think it was a really great time spending time and working with him. I truly love how he moves, and I can learn from that. It was really amazing.

Cha Junhwan’s Free Skate: A Tango of Innovation and Tribute

The Mr/Mme program is not the only area where Cha has drawn inspiration from other Winter Olympic figure skating greats this season. His free skate, which is set to the passionate tango Balada para un Loco by Astor Piazzolla, also showcases his growing desire to experiment and explore different aspects of skating. Interestingly, this is the same music that Japan’s Shoma Uno used for his free skate during the 2016–2017 season, a routine that helped him secure the World Championships Winter Olympic figure skating silver medal.

I know Shoma used Balada para un Loco too, and his program is one of my favorites, Cha said with admiration. Shoma used this program very iconically, but I think you have to keep using great music because Winter Olympic figure skating is all about music, and skaters can interpret a piece in so many different ways.

Milano Cortina 2026 Tickets

Cha, however, is determined to make the routine his own. I wanted to skate in a totally different way than I did before, he explained. The first time I heard this music, it was a different version, and I was searching for many versions until the Milva version came to me. I asked Shae-Lynn, ‘How about this song?’ and she really loved it too. Cha’s free skate is another example of his evolving style—one that blends passion, intricacy, and emotional depth, all while honoring the past.

Overcoming Challenges: Cha Junhwan’s Resilience in the Face of Injury

Despite his clear dedication to the sport, Cha’s journey has not been without challenges. The South Korean skater has had to battle through a series of injuries, including lingering issues with his ankle and hip. These setbacks have sometimes made it difficult to maintain the intense training schedule required for elite-level competition. For the ankle, last year at Winter Olympic figure skating Canada, it was 100 percent not great. But I think this year I’m almost 70, 80 percent recovered, he says. I still need to keep taking care of it, but I think I can manage that.

Despite the toll his body has taken over the years, Cha remains driven by his passion for figure skating. His ambition to qualify for a third consecutive Olympic Games is a significant motivator, as he looks ahead to Winter Olympic Milano Cortina 2026. I’m very honoured to be challenging for going to my third Winter Olympic Olympic Cha shares. It really gives me a lot of motivation and passion about it. Just keep working hard and do my best.

Cha Junhwan’s Road to Winter Olympic Milano Cortina 2026: Overcoming Challenges and Staying Focused

Cha’s schedule this season is grueling, with multiple competitions lined up in addition to his two Grand Prix outings at Skate Canada International and the Finlandia Trophy. I had kind of a busy offseason, shows and training and going to the U.S. for new programs, Cha recounts. I have one more Grand Prix, in Finland, I have the Korean Nationals, and then (Winter World) University Games in Turin in January and Asian (Winter) Games in Harbin in February. Despite the challenging workload, Cha is committed to pushing through and maintaining his focus on the ultimate goal Winter Olympic Milano Cortina 2026.

While the physical toll of the sport continues to challenge him, Cha’s resilience and passion for Winter Olympic Figure skating remain his driving forces.

At just 23 years old, Cha is already in his third Olympic cycle, an achievement few skaters can claim at such a young age. Rising Demand for Winter Olympic Sports Tourism: Ski Resorts and Packages Drive Growth

One of the key indicators of the sector’s growth is the remarkable rise in bookings for ski resorts and winter tourist destinations. During this year’s Double Eleven shopping festival, which is akin to Black Friday in the West, Bonski, a prominent ski tourism platform, launched new packages starting at 499 yuan ($68) that included both hotel stays and ski pass tickets redeemable at eight ski cities across China. These affordable offerings have made skiing more accessible to a wider audience, especially considering the increasing popularity of winter sports among the Chinese middle class.

A New Chapter in Winter Olympic Short Track Speed Skating as Suzanne Schulting Explores Long Track

Suzanne Schulting, one of the brightest stars in the world of Winter Olympic speed skating, has been a force to be reckoned with in Winter Olympic short track speed skating for years. A three-time Olympic gold medalist, Schulting’s achievements on the ice have solidified her place in history as one of the sport’s top competitors. However, in a surprising twist, Schulting has qualified for the Dutch World Cup team in Winter Olympic long track speed skating, a discipline that is very different from her familiar short track events.

Schulting’s Transition: Navigating the Future of Winter Olympic Short Track and Long Track Speed Skating

This qualification raises intriguing questions about Schulting’s future in the sport, especially as she navigates the balance between her short track legacy and her potential in long track. Schulting’s decision to explore long track comes after a significant injury she broke her ankle during the 2023 World Championships in short track. This has added a new layer of complexity to her plans for the upcoming 2024-25 season, especially as she must decide which discipline, and which competition, will take priority.

Here is a deeper look into Suzanne Schulting’s transition from short track to long track, her injury recovery, and the larger context of her role in Dutch Winter Olympic speed skating.

Schulting’s Surprising Milestone: A New Winter Olympic Challenge in Long Track

Suzanne Schulting’s achievement at the Dutch trials over the weekend marks a surprising milestone. Despite her focus being largely on short track for the majority of her career, Schulting placed fourth in both the 500m and the 1000m events. These finishes were enough to secure her a spot on the Dutch World Cup team for Winter Olympic long track events, at least for the first four World Cups of the 2024-25 season. You Can Read Winter Olympic: Jordan Stolz’s Focus on Milano Cortina 2026

The news has created a buzz in the Dutch skating community, particularly given Schulting’s long history as a short track specialist. While the idea of competing in both short track and long track isn’t new Italian skater Arianna Fontana has expressed her desire to do so at the Winter Olympic Milano Cortina 2026 Schulting’s situation is unique in that she’s coming off a serious injury. Furthermore, her decision to potentially embrace long track competition for an entire season adds another layer of intrigue to her already remarkable career.

Schulting herself has been careful in framing her next steps. According to Dutch media, she has stated that if she wants to focus more on long track, she needs to see potential for winning. If I want to do more long track, I have to see potential to win she said in an interview following her qualification.

Injury Recovery and Strategic Decision-Making: Schulting’s Winter Olympic Path Forward

Schulting’s decision-making process for the upcoming season is heavily influenced by her recovery from a broken ankle, which she sustained at the 2023 Winter Olympic speed skating World Championships in short track. The injury has had a significant impact on her short track training, and as a result, Schulting has yet to race in short track events this season.

Milano Cortina 2026 Tickets

This injury has, however, provided Schulting with a new perspective on long track skating. She has openly admitted that it is easier for her to compete in long track events at this moment, as they put less strain on her ankle. This has fueled speculation that Schulting might make long track her focus for at least part of the season.

While Schulting has yet to make an official decision, she remains cautious about her long-term goals. She wants to ensure that her body is fully healed before committing to either discipline full-time. On Monday, we will see how the ankle develops, and then we will make a choice Schulting said in a statement, noting that the proximity of both the long track and Winter Olympic short track World Cup events in Asia could influence her decision.

Balancing Short Track and Long Track: A Winter Olympic Challenge

The idea of competing in both short track and long track at the same time isn’t unprecedented, but it is a rare feat. The Dutch Winter Olympic Short Track speed skating community has had some history with athletes competing in both disciplines, notably Jorien ter Mors, who participated in both short track and long track at the 2014 and 2018 Winter Olympic. Ter Mors even won medals in both events during the 2018 Winter Olympic Games, a feat that was widely celebrated.

However, balancing both disciplines—especially at the highest level of competition—presents significant challenges. Winter Olympic Short track and long track skating require different techniques and training approaches. Short track skaters must contend with tight corners and explosive, high-speed bursts of energy, while long track skaters face the challenge of maintaining speed over longer distances, often on a less confined rink.

Suzanne Schulting’s ability to compete in both events has led some to suggest that she could follow in the footsteps of Ter Mors, but the timing, especially with her injury recovery, will be a critical factor in her success.

Schulting’s Long Track Breakthrough: A Strong Start Amid Recovery

Schulting’s fourth-place finishes in both the 500m and the 1000m at the Dutch trials were enough to earn her a place on the World Cup roster, a significant achievement considering her injury and the fact that she has largely focused on Winter Olympic short track events in recent years. These finishes also underscore the depth of Schulting’s talent in speed skating as a whole, as she was able to compete at a high level in long track despite being a relative newcomer to the discipline.

Her qualification for the Dutch World Cup team places her alongside some of the world’s top long track skaters. The first World Cup stop of the season is set to take place in Nagano, Japan, in just a few weeks, and Schulting will have to decide whether she will take part.

Although Schulting is currently undecided about her schedule, her performance at the trials suggests that she is in a strong position to compete if she chooses to focus on long track. Given that long track events are often spread over longer distances, Schulting may find herself more comfortable returning to competition in this discipline, as it requires less immediate explosive power than Winter Olympic short track Speed Skating racing, which might put more strain on her healing ankle.

Schulting’s Winter Olympic Future: A Dual Path Between Short Track Speed Skating  and Long Track

As Schulting contemplates her next move, all eyes will be on her performance in upcoming events. Should she choose to focus on long track for the season, the World Cup races will serve as a testing ground for her potential in the sport. With her remarkable ability to succeed in both disciplines, Schulting has the potential to make a strong impact on long track competitions, even if she has not fully committed to it yet.

In addition to the long track events, Schulting has the opportunity to continue her legacy in short track. The next World Cup event for short track will take place in Beijing in early December, right after the second-long track World Cup event, which will also held in Beijing Winter Olympic. Schulting’s decision to potentially compete in both events in such close proximity reflects her versatility and determination.

Moreover, Schulting’s injury recovery will continue to play a key role in her decision-making process. If her ankle heals fully and she feels confident returning to short track, she may choose to split her time between the two disciplines. But if the injury still causes discomfort, Winter Olympic long track Speed Skating may become her primary focus for the season.

A Broader View: The State of Dutch Short Track Speed Skating

Schulting’s move to explore long track also comes at a time when several top Dutch speed skaters are sideline due to injury or illness. Kjeld Nuis, a three-time Winter Olympic gold medalist, missed the trials for the World Cups due to a groin injury. Patrick Roest, a three-time world all-around champion, also missed the trials after undergoing wisdom tooth extraction. Femke Kok, a two-time world 500m champion, is out with a viral infection.

In this context, Schulting’s qualification for the World Cup team is especially significant. While many of the Netherlands’ top Winter Olympic long track skaters are currently unavailable, Schulting has the opportunity to carve out a unique place for herself in the sport. Dutch media have reported that top skaters like Nuis, Roest, and Kok could still given World Cup spots if they missed the trials due to injury or illness, meaning Schulting may not have to compete against the full roster of Dutch long track skaters just yet.

Suzanne Schulting: A New Chapter in Winter Olympic Short Track Speed Skating

Suzanne Schulting’s decision to explore Winter Olympic long track speed skating adds another fascinating layer to her already remarkable career. Known as one of the most accomplished short track skaters in history, Schulting’s potential transition to long track opens up new opportunities and challenges for her. Whether she decides to split her focus between short track and long track or embrace one discipline over the other, Schulting’s versatility and determination will likely keep her at the top of both sports.

As she continues her recovery and weighs her options, Schulting’s journey will undoubtedly be one to watch in the coming seasons. Her story is one of resilience, ambition, and a relentless drive to push beyond the limits of what’s expect. In the world of Winter Olympic speed skating, Suzanne Schulting has already proven that she is capable of defying expectations—both on the ice and off. The next chapter in her career promises to be just as exciting as her previous triumphs.

From the heat of the Arizona desert to the bustling streets of New York City, Pulkinen has seamlessly blended two seemingly unrelated worlds: elite figure skating and high finance. A Desert Dream: Camden’s Unconventional Start in Winter Olympic Figure Skating

Born and raised in Scottsdale, Arizona, a city renowned for its desert landscape, Pulkinen’s early years were filled with the heat of the Sonoran Desert rather than the chill of the ice rink. Scottsdale’s culture is deeply rooted in American sports like baseball and American football, but Camden’s passion for athletics took a different form. Unlike his peers, who spent their time on the football field, Camden’s journey began with a simple but profound choice he laced up his skates.

Forging His Own Path: Camden’s Journey Through Skating and Adolescenc

It was his older sister, Elena, who first introduced him to the ice at the age of five. Elena soon lost interest in the sport, but Camden found something deeper. Winter Olympic Figure skating was not just a pastime for him; it became an avenue for self-expression, determination, and defying the norm. As a teenager, Camden was the only figure skater in his high school of 4,000 students. This isolation was not a burden, but a source of strength. He was used to being different.

As he navigated through adolescence, Pulkinen was constantly torn between his academic pursuits and his love for Winter Olympic Figure skating. While many students in his high school were consumed with sports like football and basketball, Camden was caught between two worlds. Yet, it was clear that his ambitions were larger than the confines of his school environment. He wasn’t content with being an ordinary high school student; he was determined to forge his own path.

A Bold Move: Camden’s Leap to Colorado Springs

When Camden was 16, he faced a critical turning point in his career. His dream of becoming a top-tier Winter Olympic figure skating seemed more distant than ever, as his results at national competitions were far from stellar. But Camden was never one to shy away from a challenge. Despite receiving little support initially from his parents who worried that he might be throwing his future away by focusing too intensely on skating Pulkinen packed his bags and made a bold decision to move to Colorado Springs. This would be his training ground, away from the warmth of Arizona and into a new environment where he could dedicate himself fully to his sport.

A Winter Olympic Path: Camden’s Rise Through Dedication and Resilience

It was a decision that paid off in spades. The move to Colorado marked a significant turning point in his skating career. Camden started to improve rapidly, earning second place at the U.S. Winter Olympic Figure Skating Junior Championships in 2017 and taking the top spot in 2018. His performances at the Junior Grand Prix also marked a new chapter, with podium finishes in 2017 and a second-place finish at the Junior Grand Prix Final. These results were a testament to Camden’s resilience and unwavering belief in himself, despite the obstacles he had faced.

The decision to move to Colorado didn’t just shape Camden’s Winter Olympic Figure skating career it also laid the foundation for the kind of person he would become. The discipline, focus, and hard work required to excel in Winter Olympic figure skating at that level became ingrained in his character, allowing him to take on challenges both on and off the ice. The Academic Shift: A New Chapter at Columbia University

With his skating career on the rise, Camden was also laying the groundwork for his future off the ice. Throughout his teenage years, he had developed a keen interest in economics, particularly how money flowed through businesses and organizations. This interest grew even stronger during his time in Colorado, where Camden began to explore the practicalities of finance as a potential career path.

When the time came for him to pursue higher education, Camden chose to move to New York City. He enrolled at Columbia University, one of the world’s most prestigious institutions, and majored in financial economics. The decision to attend Columbia was more than just about academics it was about embracing a new life and a new environment. Camden had never lived in a large city before, and New York offered a world of opportunities to grow both as a student and as an individual.

Living in New York also marked the beginning of Camden’s balancing act between the worlds of finance and Winter Olympic figure skating. As a student at Columbia, he had to manage his rigorous academic schedule with his intense training commitments. For many students, the pressure of balancing schoolwork with athletic training would be overwhelming. But for Camden, it was a challenge he was determined to conquer.

Finding Balance: Camden’s Journey Between Skating and Academics

Finding a balance between skating and academics was not easy for Camden. Yet, he approached this challenge with the same tenacity that had propelled him in his Figure skating career. He sought advice from those who had balanced athletics and academics before him. One such mentor was Paul Wylie, a Winter Olympic silver medalist and Harvard alumnus, who shared valuable insight into how to compartmentalize the two aspects of Camden’s life.

Wylie’s advice was simple but profound: when Camden left the gates of Columbia University, he needed to shift into skating mode and leave school behind. Similarly, when he entered campus, Winter Olympic Figure skating had to be put aside. This approach allowed Camden to mentally separate the two worlds and focus completely on one or the other when the time came.

The strategy worked. Camden’s ability to fully immerse himself in his studies when necessary and switch gears when he needed to skate helped him to excel in both fields. While his classmates were focused on exams and deadlines, Camden was mastering quads, perfecting his routines, and developing his emotional connection with the sport that has defined his career. For Camden, skating became not just a sport, but a form of self-expression an outlet for the emotional side of his personality.

A New Chapter: Balancing Corporate Strategy and Winter Olympic Figure Skating

By the time Camden graduated from Columbia in 2024 with a degree in financial economics, he had already taken on a new challenge: full-time employment in the corporate strategy department at Capital One in New York City. This new role required a shift in Camden’s mindset. He was no longer just a student-athlete; he was a professional balancing the demands of an intense career with his passion for Winter Olympic figure skating.

Fortunately, Capital One offered a generous work-from-home policy, which allowed Camden to maintain his training schedule while fulfilling his professional responsibilities. The flexibility of remote work meant that Camden could focus on his financial responsibilities in the mornings and train in the afternoons and evenings. This new lifestyle was more structured than his previous routine, but Camden was able to adapt, finding a rhythm that worked for him.

For someone with such a strong sense of independence and an aversion to the corporate cubicle lifestyle, Camden found this balance ideal. He often jokes that cubicles suck the soul out of people and he is thankful that his work environment allows him the freedom to stay connected to his passions while succeeding professionally.

The Duality of Camden Pulkinen: Balancing Winter Olympic Figure Skating and Finance

The most intriguing aspect of Camden Pulkinen’s life is the duality he navigates every day. He is both a world-class figure skater, performing at the highest levels of competition, and a financial strategist in one of the world’s most fast-paced cities. On the ice, Camden is a dynamic performer, channeling his emotions into his routines, while in the corporate world, he is a calm, calculating professional, managing financial strategies and corporate affairs.

For Camden, these two identities are not in conflict. In fact, they complement each other in a way that is uniquely his own. Winter Olympic Figure Skating allows him to release the emotional tension that comes with his corporate career, while his work in finance provides him with the discipline and analytical skills needed to approach skating in a more strategic and thoughtful way.

The Road to Winter Olympic Milano Cortina 2026: Camden Pulkinen’s Olympic Ambitions

With the Winter Olympic Milano Cortina 2026 games on the horizon, Camden Pulkinen is focused on securing his spot on the U.S. Olympic team. While he has already competed on some of the biggest stages in Winter Olympic figure skating including the World Championships, the Grand Prix, and the Four Continents an Olympic berth remains his ultimate goal. The road to qualification is challenging, but Camden is no stranger to overcoming obstacles. With the addition of more quad jumps into his routine and unwavering focus on improving his technical skills, Camden is prepare to do whatever it takes to achieve his dream.

Competing in the Winter Olympic would mark the culmination of everything Camden has worked for in his skating career. But beyond the competition, it would be a personal victory—a moment to reflect on the years of hard work, sacrifices, and risks he has taken to get to that point.

I just feel so grateful that I get to continue my career and skate, Camden says. What I love is Winter Olympic Figure skating and I’m so thankful that I get to continue to be the enigma that I am.

Winter Olympic 2026: Madison Chock and Evan Bates Lead Historic U.S. One-Two at NHK Trophy

The NHK Trophy, held as the fourth stop of the prestigious ISU Grand Prix of Winter Olympic Figure Skating Series, witnessed a historic performance from the U.S. ice dance teams as Madison Chock and Evan Bates claimed their 25th career Grand Prix podium with a victory, while their teammates Christina Carreira and Anthony Ponomarenko took second place. This was a landmark achievement for U.S. ice dance, as it marked the first time two U.S. teams had finished first and second at a Grand Prix event outside of Skate America.

Chock and Bates: A Record-Breaking Victory at NHK Trophy

Madison Chock (32) and Evan Bates (35), two-time reigning world champions, have been a dominant force in international ice dance for over a decade. Their performance at the NHK Trophy in Tokyo further solidified their place as one of the most consistent and successful teams in the history of the sport.

The pair’s victory in Japan, with a total score of 215.95 points, not only earned them first place at NHK but also pushed them to the top of the world rankings for the 2024-2025 season. This performance marked their 20th consecutive podium finish in the Grand Prix regular season, with 18 of those being top-two finishes, an unprecedented feat in ice dance.

Chock and Bates: Resilience and Consistency in the Lead-Up to the Winter Olympics 2026

Chock and Bates are known for their exceptional technical skill, intricate choreography, and deep connection on the ice. Their rhythmic dance and free dance, executed flawlessly in Tokyo, allowed them to rebound from a slightly disappointing performance at Skate America earlier in the season, where they finished second after a fall during the rhythm dance. The fall at Skate America ended a remarkable 8-event win streak, which dated back to the start of 2023, but they showed resilience at NHK, proving once again why they are considered one of the best ice dance teams in the world.

The victory in Tokyo has secured Chock and Bates’ qualification for their ninth Grand Prix Final, which will be held in December. Their qualification comes as a result of their dominant performance over the series’ first four events, with top-two finishes in all but one event. Chock and Bates’ ability to maintain such consistency over the years, including through injury and changes in the competitive landscape, speaks to their remarkable skill and professionalism.

The Key to Success: Chock and Bates’ Consistency and Evolution

The longevity of Chock and Bates’ career is a testament to their ability to adapt and evolve. From their early days on the Grand Prix circuit to becoming world champions, they have continually refined their technique and artistry. Their ongoing success is also a result of their cohesive partnership, which has allowed them to connect with the audience and judges alike.

In Tokyo, Chock and Bates showcased a free dance that not only demonstrated their impeccable technical abilities but also brought out the emotional depth that ice dance demands. Their storytelling ability, which they have honed over the years, was on full display, and their performance was widely praised for its maturity and emotional resonance.

At the Grand Prix Final, Chock and Bates will likely face stiff competition from some of the best teams in the world, including Italians Charlene Guignard and Marco Fabbri, as well as Canadians Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier. Guignard and Fabbri have been consistent challengers, having finished on the podium at the past two World Championships, while Gilles and Poirier are perennial contenders at the top level. Carreira and Ponomarenko: A Breakthrough Moment at the NHK Trophy

The performance of Christina Carreira and Anthony Ponomarenko at the NHK Trophy was one of the most notable stories of the event. The duo, who have been a part of the U.S. ice dance landscape since their debut in the Grand Prix series in 2018, delivered a career-best performance, securing second place at the event.

Carreira and Ponomarenko’s silver medal marked their first Grand Prix podium finish and sent a clear signal that they are now a force to be reckoned with on the world stage. This result, coming just weeks after their fourth-place finish at Skate America, solidifies their place as the leading challengers within the U.S. ice dance program, especially in the post-2018 Olympic cycle.

Carreira and Ponomarenko: Rising Stars on the Road to the Winter Olympics 2026

Carreira, 24, who was born in Montreal, Canada, has been working toward securing U.S. citizenship to compete for the U.S. in the Winter Olympic Milano Cortina 2026. This will be a crucial step in her Olympic journey as the U.S. will need a competitive pair to challenge for the podium in the coming years. Ponomarenko, who is 23, comes from a family with deep roots in figure skating. His parents, Marina Klimova and Sergei Ponomarenko, won gold in ice dance at the 1992 Winter Olympic for the Soviet Union.

The couple’s second-place finish at NHK was the best Grand Prix result of their careers and marked a significant milestone in their development as a team. With a combined total of 203.58 points, they finished just behind Chock and Bates, narrowly missing out on the top spot but clearly showing that they are ready to compete at the highest level. Their free dance performance, set to music from the iconic Phantom of the Opera, was particularly well-received, showcasing their musicality and technical proficiency.

Carreira and Ponomarenko: A Strong Push Toward the Winter Olympic 2026

Carreira and Ponomarenko’s runner-up finish at NHK has placed them in contention for their first Grand Prix Final. However, they will need to perform well at their next event, the Cup of China, in order to secure a spot in the Final. With this in mind, the upcoming weeks will be crucial for their Olympic prospects, as qualifying for the Grand Prix Final would be a significant achievement for the young duo. They are poised to become one of the top U.S. ice dance teams in the lead-up to the Winter Olympic 2026.

Kaori Sakamoto: A Dominant Force in Women’s Skating and Winter Olympic 2026 Aspirations

In the women’s event at the NHK Trophy, Japanese three-time world champion Kaori Sakamoto delivered an incredible performance to claim her fifth consecutive Grand Prix title. Her victory at NHK, with a total score of 231.88 points, was yet another dominant showing from the talented Japanese skater. As a result, she continued to solidify her position at the top of the field, further showcasing her consistency and exceptional skill. Moreover, this win reinforced her status as one of the leading figures in women’s figure skating, particularly as she gears up for the Winter Olympic Milano Cortina 2026.

Sakamoto’s performance at NHK continued her reign over the women’s field, having secured her place as one of the top skaters in the world. Her consistency on the Grand Prix circuit, combined with her artistry and technical skill, has made her one of the most dominant figures in women’s figure skating.

With this victory, Sakamoto has officially qualified for the Grand Prix Final, where she will face tough competition from other top contenders, including U.S. skaters Alysa Liu and Bradie Tennell, who finished fourth and fifth, respectively, at NHK. Sakamoto’s remarkable season underscores her status as a contender for gold at the Winter Olympic 2026, with her strong showing at NHK serving as a key part of her preparations.

Yuma Kagiyama: A Resilient Performance and a Strong Push for Olympic Glory

Japanese skater Yuma Kagiyama, the 2022 Winter Olympic silver medalist, made a stellar debut in the 2024 Grand Prix season by taking first place in the men’s event at NHK. Despite a shaky start to his free skate, which included a fall on his opening quadruple flip, Kagiyama demonstrated his resilience by landing three more clean quad jumps. In doing so, he was able to recover from the early setback and regain his momentum, ultimately securing a commanding victory. As a result, his ability to rebound under pressure highlighted both his technical skill and mental toughness, which were key to his success in the competition.

Kagiyama’s performance, with a total score of 300.09 points, pushed him into second place in the world rankings behind world champion Ilia Malinin. The competition between Kagiyama and Malinin at the Grand Prix Final will be one of the most anticipated matchups of the season, with both skaters possessing exceptional technical skills and artistic expression.

Winter Olympics 2026: Rising Stars and Olympic Aspirations in Pairs Skating

In the pairs event, Anastasiia Metelkina and Luka Berulava of Georgia emerged as surprise champions at the NHK Trophy, overtaking Japan’s Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara in the free skate to take their first Grand Prix title. The Georgian pair’s performance was a breakthrough in their careers, as they had never before finished on a Grand Prix podium.

Metelkina and Berulava’s victory marked a turning point for the young pair, who have been rising stars in the world of pairs skating. Their victory over Miura and Kihara, who are the 2023 World Champions, showcased their potential and could signal a shift in the global pairs landscape.

The U.S. pair of Ellie Kam and Danny O’Shea, who had placed second at Skate America earlier in the season, finished third at NHK despite facing challenges in their free skate. Kam and O’Shea, who have been steadily improving, are in a strong position to qualify for the Grand Prix Final, barring a few more solid performances in the remaining Grand Prix events.

Road to Winter Olympic 2026: Mellissa Lotholz’s Journey of Dedication, Perseverance, and Passion

With less than 500 days remaining until the next Winter Olympic, Mellissa Lotholz, a bobsledder from Northern Alberta, is preparing for an exciting and challenging season ahead. Unlike the Griswold family’s vacation plans, Lotholz’s upcoming travels are not for leisure but for an intense training schedule and competition as she works toward earning a spot on the Canadian Bobsleigh national team for the Winter Olympic 2026. As a key member of Canada’s sliding contingent, she will participate in the World Cup circuit, focusing on both the two-women and monobob events.

Lotholz, who hails from Barrhead, Alberta, has been training in the sport for over 11 years. After a decade of progress, she is confident that she will be heading overseas with her teammates in just two weeks to compete on the World Cup circuit. Despite the official roster announcements being reserved until the Canadian Championships, Lotholz’s inclusion on the senior team, as listed by Winter Olympic Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton, has confirmed her spot as the pilot of her sled. She will likely team up with fellow Albertan Leah Wakenden as her brakeman for the season.

From Brakeman to Pilot: Lotholz’s Journey in Winter Olympic Bobsleigh

Lotholz’s journey into Winter Olympic bobsleigh began in 2014, when she joined the national team following a dryland identification camp. She initially competed as a brakeman, a crucial role that involves explosive power at the start of the race, but her aspirations were always to pilot the sled. This transition to pilot has been a significant part of her Olympic journey. After the 2018 Winter Olympic in Pyeongchang, where she paired with Christine de Bruin to compete in the two-women bobsleigh event, Lotholz shifted her focus to the front seat, where she would steer the sled.

However, the road to becoming a bobsleigh pilot has not been without obstacles. Lotholz’s progress was hindered by the pandemic, which shortened the 2020-2021 World Cup season and caused her to take a year off following the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic. Additionally, Canada lost its third sled in the senior circuit, further complicating her return. Nevertheless, thanks to the team’s strong performance at the 2023 Winter Olympic World Championships, Canada is set to compete with a third sled again in the World Cup circuit. I’m excited about the upcoming season and being on the ice again Lotholz said, her enthusiasm palpable despite the challenges.

Intense Training and Open Tryouts: Lotholz Prepares for the Canadian Championships and World Cup

In preparation for the Canadian Championships and the World Cup, Lotholz has been undergoing a grueling training regimen that includes camps across Canada. Currently, she is attending a three-week sliding camp in Whistler, British Columbia, where she is refining her technique and conditioning in anticipation of the competitive season ahead. Before heading to Whistler, Lotholz and her teammates had been training at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary, home of Winter Olympic Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton. The Calgary camp was particularly important because it also included push camp tryouts, where athletes tested their strength and skills for potential team placements.

Unlike past years, there was an open tryout at push camp, Lotholz explained. This year, we saw a lot of newcomers to the sport, including athletes from track and field, basketball, and football. It’s exciting to see how different sports contribute to Winter Olympic bobsleigh.

The push camp was part of a series of three camps held over the summer by the national team. Lotholz noted that, on the men’s side, there was a noticeable influx of athletes seeking to transition into the sport. This speaks to the versatility of Winter Olympic bobsleigh, as athletes from various disciplines are drawn to the explosive power and teamwork required to succeed.

Overcoming Injury and Adapting to the Demands of Winter Olympic Bobsleigh

In addition to her regular training, Lotholz has had to manage an ongoing Achilles injury. To prepare for the season, she arrived in Calgary a couple of months ahead of schedule to focus on rehabilitation. Working with the national team’s physiotherapists and massage therapists, she has made recovery a priority, ensuring that her body is in top form for the upcoming season.

It has definitely been a tougher road for athletes in recent years, especially with the physical demands of the sport. When I first joined the national team, I don’t think I realized just how much work it takes to be a bobsledder. We’re not just athletes; we’re also mechanics, engineers, and strategists Lotholz shared.

Milano Cortina 2026 Tickets

Her ability to adapt to the physical and mental strains of the sport is part of what has made Lotholz such a successful athlete. Winter Olympic Bobsleigh requires a combination of speed, power, and mental toughness, and Lotholz’s experience has helped her navigate the complex challenges the sport presents. For her, the process of setting up the sled is just as important as the performance itself. You Can Read USA Winter Olympic Bobsleigh Inspiring Journeys of Hakeem Abdul-Saboor and Frank Delduca

Most of the work on the two-person sled has been done, but I still have some work to do on the monobob, she said, indicating that she is always fine-tuning her equipment and techniques.

A New Partnership: Lotholz Teams Up with Leah Wakenden for the World Cup

This year, Lotholz will be working with new brakemen. In Calgary and heading into the Canadian Championships, she has mostly trained with Eden Wilson. However, when she takes to the World Cup circuit, she will be paired with Leah Wakenden, a fellow Albertan and former track and field competitor.

Leah is actually from Ardrossan [near Sherwood Park], and we grew up competing against each other in track and field, Lotholz recalled. She often bested me in the 60-metre sprint, but it’s exciting to now be teammates in bobsleigh. We were also both at the University of Alberta at the same time, so it’s been a long journey to this point. I’m excited to see what a couple of UofA athletes can do in a sled on the world stage.

Working with Wakenden represents an exciting new chapter for Lotholz, as the two will bring their shared history and athletic prowess to the World Cup circuit. The partnership will be key to Lotholz’s success in the upcoming season, and their combined strengths will be critical as they face some of the world’s best bobsledders.

The Financial Reality of Winter Olympic Bobsleigh: Lotholz’s Struggle with Self-Funding

Despite the rigorous training and competition, Lotholz and her fellow bobsleigh athletes must also contend with a significant financial burden. Winter Olympic Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton has had to make cutbacks in recent years, meaning athletes are largely self-funded. This financial strain has added a layer of complexity to the pursuit of Olympic dreams.

We are largely self-funded, so we have to rely on sponsors and donors Lotholz said. We’re responsible for a lot of our own logistics, and it’s not easy. There’s always adversity in Winter Olympic bobsleigh, but the added financial pressure is a big hurdle.

For Lotholz, the cost of competition has been high. Last season, she spent roughly $43,000, which didn’t even cover the costs of her brakeman. This season, she is expecting to spend around $45,000—again, without factoring in the cost of her teammate.

Every hundredth of a second matters in our sport, and so does every dollar, Lotholz said, underscoring the harsh reality of competing at such an elite level. Despite these challenges, Lotholz is grateful for the support she has received from her home community of Barrhead, Alberta. The Barrhead community has been so supportive. They really believe in me and my Olympic journey, and I’m thankful for that every day.

To help offset the costs, Winter Olympic Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton has registered as a not-for-profit charity, which allows athletes to issue tax receipts. This initiative is a lifeline for athletes like Lotholz who need to raise funds for their training and competition.

Entrepreneurial Spirit: Lotholz Launches Eh Team Apparel to Support Bobsleigh Dreams

In addition to her athletic pursuits, Lotholz has taken an entrepreneurial approach to raising funds for her Olympic dreams. Along with fellow bobsledder Alex Klein, Lotholz launched Eh Team Apparel, an online streetwear brand. The company is design to help offset the costs of training and competition, while also supporting the broader bobsleigh community.

Eh Team Apparel is a way to help athletes raise money, but it’s also a chance to give back to the sport and the community that’s support us, Lotholz explained. It’s been exciting to see the response, and we hope that it continues to grow.
