It’s a spectacular way to kick off the Revival’s weekend of historic racing. But what exactly is the Freddie March Memorial Trophy? The roots of this race trace back to the Goodwood Nine Hours. A series of endurance events held from 1952 to 1955 that brought nighttime motorsport to the forefront of British racing.

These original events featured the finest sports cars of the time, piloted by legendary drivers. The inaugural Goodwood Nine Hours in 1952 was won by Peter Collins and Pat Griffith in an Aston Martin DB3. Competing against the likes of Roy Salvadori, Reg Parnell, and Stirling Moss. In 1953, Parnell teamed up with Eric Thompson to win again in another DB3.

Aston Martin’s dominance continued in 1955 when Peter Poore took the checkered flag, keeping the famed DB3’s winning legacy alive. The modern-day Freddie March Memorial Trophy is named in honor of the Duke of Richmond’s grandfather. Freddie March, who founded the Goodwood Motor Circuit.

Goodwood Revival 2025: Opening the Revival with 1950s Racing Spirit

The race features a grid of cars identical in spirit and specification to those that competed in the original 1950s events. Iconic marques such as Jaguar, Maserati, Aston Martin, and Ferrari regularly feature on the entry list. Alongside other period classics from Cooper, Frazer Nash, and HWM.

While the authenticity of the cars is paramount, so too is the format. Just like in the original events, headlights are mandatory. Adding a dramatic visual element as the cars race into the fading light. With strategy and endurance playing just as important a role as outright speed over the 60-minute race.

The Freddie March Memorial Trophy has produced a variety of winners in recent years. With no single car or driver leading the event. The past five editions have been won by five different cars, including the Maserati 250S, Jaguar D-Type, HWM-Jaguar, Maserati 300S. And Jaguar C-Type, and five different driver pairings, proof of the modest balance and volatility of the race.

For the Goodwood Revival 2025, the Freddie March Memorial Trophy will once again serve as the curtain-raiser for the weekend. Following the traditional VW Type 2 Samba Bus parade around the circuit. The grid of genuine 1950s sports cars will line up for the first competitive race of the event.

The Duke of Richmond, host of the Goodwood Revival, echoed the excitement, praising the level of talent the event attracts each year.

Every year, we are honored to welcome some of the world’s utmost drivers and riders to the Goodwood . Drawing on experience from across the breadth of motorsport, these competitors turn their skill. And passion to historic racing, often facing rivals they’d never otherwise meet on the track. I’m glad to them for taking the time to join us over the weekend and look forward to seeing them in action.

Villeneuve’s partaking in the Revival comes shortly after he reunited with fellow F1 champions and racing icons at the Revival Festival. Where the motorsport world celebrated 75 years of the Formula 1 World Championship. During that four-day show, Villeneuve got behind the wheel of Niki Lauda’s renowned Ferrari 312 B3. Relishing with fans and bringing back memories of motorsport’s golden era.

Goodwood Revival: The Day Racing Returned to Goodwood

Every race at the Goodwood Revival is special, but the very first Sussex Trophy in 1998 stands out above the rest. It marked the return of motor racing to the long-lost Goodwood Motor Circuit for the first time since the gates closed after the 71st Members’ Meeting in 1966.

The inaugural Goodwood Revival gave a new generation the chance to step back in time. Watching some of history’s most beautiful racing cars rekindle classic battles on a circuit exactly as it was in its heyday. No modern run-off areas, no added chicanes. Just the same track from over 30 years earlier, carefully restored to its original glory.

At Goodwood, skill behind the wheel was rewarded and mistakes came at a cost, but above all. The event brought the golden era of the circuit vividly back to life. The 1998 Sussex Trophy was unforgettable, setting the stage for the kind of on-track drama the Revival is now known for. Though this race came with a twist we’re unlikely to witness again.

Frank Sytner, a two-time British Touring Car Champion and founder of the Sytner Group, and the late Robert Brooks. Founder of Brooks Auctioneers, later acquired by Bonhams, lined up on the grid to renew the fierce rivalry that had defined that year’s historic motorsport season.

Goodwood Revival Tickets: The Opening Collision That Lit Up Goodwood

Behind the wheels of machines stood in history. The two were ready to put on a show at the Goodwood Revival Tickets Motor Circuit. Brooks’ Lotus, once raced by Graham Hill, was the kind of agile British sports car the Revival rejoices. Weighing just 500kg and powered by 200PS, it was quick on Goodwood’s wide layout. A strikingly crafted missile capable of reaching 140mph down the Lavant Straight.

Even so, the Lotus was slightly outgunned by Sytner’s 300PS (224kW) Lister-Jaguar. It promised to be a classic showdown between two heavyweights of historic motorsport. True to form, Sytner’s competitive instincts showed before the race even began. He angled the nose of his Lister straight at Brooks while they sat on the grid.

When the flag fell, Sytner put his plan into action, sweeping across the track and forcing Brooks toward the path of another Lotus 15. From the commentary box, Murray Walker and Simon Taylor saw it as a masterful move to edge Brooks out before unleashing all 300 horsepower of the Lister to charge into the lead.

The truth only emerged after reviewing footage from the Goodyear blimp. The two cars had made contact, with Sytner’s rear wheel spinner scraping the Lotus’ paint and knocking loose the spring clip on its rear clam shell, sending the bodywork arching up behind Brooks’ head like a cobra ready to strike.

Goodwood Revival Saturday Tickets: Brooks’ Relentless Charge Through the Field

Brooks was instantly shown the black-and-orange mechanical warning flag that his damaged car was a hazard to both him and the others. But fired up from the dramatic start and likely seeing red, he never noticed it. Instead, he charged on, focused solely on chasing down his rivals. Later, Brooks joked that the marshals would have had to lie across the track to stop him.

Luckily for the spectators, the marshals didn’t stop him, and the laps that followed became part of Goodwood folklore. Instead of holding him back, the clash with Sytner seemed to ignite Brooks. Pushing him to close in on John Harper and muscle past with a nudge into the chicane, claiming third place.

Brooks then set his sights on second-place runner Stuart Graham, also in a Lister-Jaguar. No small feat considering his car was hauling what felt like a parachute behind it. What I remember most about that race was the incredible duel with Stuart Graham, Brooks recalled.

Stuart was a far better driver than I, but his car was heavy and a real handful around Goodwood Revival Saturday Tickets with that big 5.0-litre Chevrolet engine, Brooks said. I remember it as a brilliant motor racing lesson from Stuart, lap after lap, every time I tried to get past, he’d shut the door.

Goodwood Revival Sunday Tickets: Brooks’ Brilliant Last-Lap Triumph

Brooks slipping ahead in the corners, only for the Lister-Jaguar’s raw power to thunder past him on the straights. Eventually, Brooks gained the upper hand, but Graham’s race came to a smoky end when his V8 gave out. Forcing him to raise a hand in surrender from a cloud of steam. A sight that would be unforgettable for anyone lucky enough to hold Goodwood Revival Sunday Tickets.

Brooks had fought his way from fifth to second, and he wasn’t about to ease off. Fueled by the sense of injustice from the race’s opening moments, he set his sights on Sytner. As the laps wound down, Sytner’s Lister Knobbly began to chew through its tyres, while Brooks’ lighter, smoother Lotus stayed strong. In the end, it wasn’t just pace but a flash of sheer brilliance that would determine the winner.

It’s hard enough to concentrate with a rival glued to your rear bumper, but for Sytner, the distraction was even greater. Brooks was chasing him with a massive chunk of bodywork flapping behind his Lotus. The opening Brooks needed came when the two leaders began weaving their way through back markers.

Sytner had the tougher job, being the first to warn the backmarkers he was coming, while Brooks slipped through with hardly any resistance. Then, with just two laps remaining and the pair closing in on Robbie Mackenzie’s Elva, Brooks seized his chance, executing a perfect switchback under Sytner at Lavant corner and, despite the Lister’s greater power, snuck to the lead around the outer of Woodcote.

Goodwood Revival: Merlyn Mk4A’s Journey to Goodwood

Goodwood Revival Tickets: We’re excited to offer a Merlyn Mk4A. Chassis 36RS, an iconic race car built in 1964 by Colchester Racing Developments (CRD) of Essex. CRD, still active today as a supplier of Merlyn parts, originally exported this car to the United States. There, it saw action in period SCCA events on the West Coast and is believed to have been first owned by Bud Kemp.

The car was later acquired by British historic race preparer Richard Taylor of Auto Tune Rishton, who brought chassis 36RS back to the UK. Taylor carried out a careful and reliable renewal, which included re-paneling the car in aircraft-grade aluminum. The car’s identity was also officially verified by Clive Hayward. Owner of Colchester Racing Developments and a trusted source of unique Merlyn modules.

Taylor sourced a full set of original-spec Mk4 modules from CRD, including a new body, uprights, wishbones. And added suspension parts to turn the car into a rolling chassis. He then sold the partially restored project to Kent-based club racer Richard Perry. Perry completed the rebuild to full race criteria, fitting it with a period-correct 1600cc Lotus-Ford Twin Cam engine and a Hewland 5-speed gearbox.

By 2016, the car had received its FIA Historic Technical Passport, valid through the end of 2026. And made its historic racing debut that same year at the Goodwood, competing in the Madgwick Cup. Despite challenging conditions with heavy rain, Richard Perry brought the car home in a respectable 13th place.

Having competed in just one race meeting since its renewal in 2010. The Merlyn returned to the UK in December 2023, with import duties fully paid by its current owner. Admitting both its antique worth and competitive potential. The new owner entrusted renowned historic race specialists Michael and Andrew Hibberd, based in Buckinghamshire. To carry out a comprehensive inspection and rebuild of the car.

The brief was frank: make the car safe, reliable, and viable. The Hibberd team, well-known for their front-running Lotus 23B in the HSCC Guards Trophy for similar sports-racing cars, carried out a wide winter rebuild in training for the 2024 season. During the process, they uncovered several major mechanical and structural issues. All of which were addressed and corrected to a high standard.

The rebuild addressed several critical issues, including a poorly designed rollover structure. A misaligned steering column, worn-out brakes, fatigued engine components, and falsely riding pedals and steering rack. Each of these problems was carefully resolved, with parts either rebuilt or replaced to the highest standard. The 1600cc twin-cam engine underwent a full rebuild by Craig Beck Racing in Suffolk.

The engine, dyno-tested at 180bhp, has proven to be both fast and reliable. With only around 10 hours of track time since its rebuild. The Hewland gearbox was fixed by Racing Transmissions at Silverstone. And the car comes with a spare set of gear ratios. With Goodwood Revival Tickets in high demand, this car presents a rare chance to compete at one of the most admired historic motorsport events.

Goodwood Revival 2025 Tickets: Turnkey Historic Racer with Goodwood Revival Entry

During the 2024 season, the car was campaigned and developed by the owner in partnership with Andrew Hibberd, competing in four rounds of the Guards Trophy. The season concluded at Silverstone, where the car impressively matched the pace of the Hibberds’ Lotus 23B, one of the fastest cars on the grid. In 2025, the current owner continued to race the car solo in four additional events.

Now in his 70s, the owner has decided to part with the Merlyn and return to Formula Junior, explaining that the sheer speed of the Mk4A is more than he wants to handle in 50-minute races. Today, the car stands as a highly competitive and meticulously developed example, backed by a complete set of invoices, setup notes, and photographs.

And has grown to become a race that everyone, including many of the world’s most legendary drivers, wants to win. Took place on 14th September 1905, and featured 58 entrants, of which 42 started. It was pitched as a race for production touring cars.

Among the regulations were requirements for chassis weight of between 590 and 730kg, wheelbase of at least 2.3 metres. And even a pre-requisite fuel economy limit of 4.5 litres per 25 miles. Although this was reduced to 22.5 miles due to conditions on the day.

John Napier was the winner of the first Tourist Trophy, driving an 18-horsepower Arrol-Johnston. He completed the 208.5-mile race distance in 6:09:04.6, at an average speed of 33.9mph. A 20-horsepower Rolls-Royce entered by Charles Rolls himself took second place. The RAC Tourist Trophy became a race for sports cars when it returned in 1928, and moved to a new venue. The Ards Circuit in Northern Ireland, another street circuit which regularly lured crowds of more than 250,000.

It was by now one of the biggest motorsport events in the world, and began to entice great drivers. The likes of Rudolf Caracciola and Tazio Nuvolari, who both won the TT driving machinery of global prestige. Nuvolari became the first driver to win the race more than once in 1933 at the wheel of an MG Magnette K3.

Two events at Donington Park preceded a 12-year layoff after the outbreak of World War II. But the RAC TT would be one of the first major motorsport events to return at the new Dundrod Circuit in 1950. Goodwood Revival Saturday Tickets: Corvette E-Ray Journey to the UK

Chevrolet doesn’t just ship cars overseas; they must ensure each vehicle meets local emissions, crash safety, and lighting standards, which are often more demanding than those in the United States. As fans keenly seek out Goodwood Revival Saturday Tickets to see such engineering marvels up close, it’s vital to grasp the general modifications required to bring these vehicles to European roads.

It involves shuffling not just the steering wheel but the entire cockpit layout, including the tool cluster, infotainment controls, HVAC system, wiring yokes, and more. This also requires re-engineering of key safety gears and recalibration of driver assist systems. For a high-performance car like the E-Ray, packed with sensors, electronic controls, and powertrain integration, the RHD conversion is an engineering feat.

And unlike mass-market vehicles, the Corvette E-Ray is produced in limited numbers. In 2024, Chevrolet produced just 1,417 E-Rays globally (599 coupes and 818 convertibles), representing only 3.3% of total C8 production (42,934 units). With even fewer units allocated to Europe, the costs of conversion and homologation can’t be spread across a high volume of vehicles.

That makes each unit dramatically more expensive to produce, ship, and certify. Moreover, UK buyers are only offered the fully loaded 3LZ trim, which already starts at $119,745 in the U.S. So while it seems that British customers are being overcharged, they’re receiving the top-spec model by default, just with a price that includes all the extra logistical and engineering work.
