I used to cap George North because I could not afford to wait another year after seeing him play at the age of 19. I did this because I believed he was dual-qualified. Though we face financial difficulties and have a relatively tiny tier-one playing base. I believe we have carried a lot of punch for our size.

When players join a squad that our staff are coaching. I would like to think that they will pick up skills, and grow as a team. Maybe experience some success that will allow them to grow. Maybe making the cut for the Lions and succeeding in the Six Nations and World Cups. But just now, it presents a challenge.

I’ve read remarks in England questioning whether the jersey’s pull is still the same. Given the abundance of alternatives available to players today, the same might be said for the Welsh jersey. It is a responsibility for us as a country and the regions to be as effective as we possibly can. Build places where competitors want to be there and are glad to be there because they can do various activities and follow different routes.

As a group, we are still not quite there, and over the coming years. This is something we must truly get right. However, we are developing a core of young players that I think will be the team’s driving force for the upcoming two World Cups. That’s what makes me excited.
