The Proteas’ only blemish was a shock 38-run defeat to familiar opponents the Netherlands as they were bowled out for 207 in their only Cricket World Cup run to date.

But with a group of batters led by opener Quinton de Kock and an explosive middle order, it is unlikely that South Africa will continue to suffer from second-innings doldrums as another chance at an elusive semi-final victory looks all but assured.

3. New Zealand (four wins, one loss)

The runner-up at the last two Cricket World Cups is well positioned to secure another semi-final berth after defeating defending champions England in the opening match and then pulling off resounding wins against less-favoured opponents.

But a tougher test awaits New Zealand, who showed they could match leaders India even without taking full control of the competition, which they ultimately lost by four wickets.

With four wins in hand and a good net rating, New Zealand will likely need two more wins to secure a playoff spot and hope to secure at least one of them against fellow rivals Australia and South Africa.

It is vital that the 1992 champions end their three-match losing streak when they next face a surging South Africa, otherwise Pakistan may have to rely on other results to keep their semi-final hopes alive.

Afghanistan are still in position to earn a spot in the semi-finals and will likely have to win at least three of their remaining four matches – if not all – to sneak through. Openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran were in fine form, while the quartet of Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Mohammad Nabi and Noor Ahmad caused some concern for the opposition batters at various stages of the tournament.

Injuries before the tournament and in the first three weeks in India proved costly for the 1996 champions, who managed just one win before the decider against England. The absence of star spinner Wanindu Hasaranga has put too much pressure on Mahisha Tikshana, while the loss of Matisha Pathirana this week has also further weakened what promises to be a competitive campaign.

A win over England is crucial to keeping Sri Lanka’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals alive, while a defeat could end their hopes of reaching the knockout stages.

Little has gone well for England so far, with the loss of in-form fast pacer Reece Topley to injury and the absence of Ben Stokes for the first three matches of the campaign hurting their chances of back-to-back titles.

Their only win so far in India came against ninth-place Bangladesh, with victory over Sri Lanka needed to give them a chance of reaching the final four.

Bangladesh will need to win all of their remaining four matches in the tournament and achieve other results to have any chance of making it to the knockout stages of the tournament. On current form, it looks like a tough task for Shakib Al Hasan’s team.

A crushing defeat to Australia has all but ended the Netherlands’ chances of reaching the Cricket World Cup semi-finals in India, with the Dutch now needing to win all four of their remaining matches to keep their slim hopes alive.

The upset win over South Africa has been the highlight of the Netherlands’ campaign so far, and Scott Edwards’ side were well on their way to losing in each of their other matches before crossing paths with rampant Australia.
