For the second time ever, Costa Rica is getting ready to compete at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Due to the significance of the accomplishment, qualifying for Australia/New Zealand 2023 was treated like a fiesta across the board in Costa Rican football, but ASOJUPRO, the players’ union, took particular joy in it.

Similar to the one already touched in 2014 for the men’s national team, the union fruitfully exchanged a collective pact on rights and bonuses for the women’s national team during this World Cup campaign.

According to Steven Bryce, general secretary of ASOJUPRO,

“As Latin Americans, we play for the love of our country in the national team.”

With this arrangement, we not only contributed to the success of the players, coaches, and federation but also to their qualification.

ASOJUPRO Agreement:

Footballer Bryce, who participated in the Korea/Japan 2002 World Cup, stressed that

“a suitable atmosphere, a calm approach, and clear rules were created to achieve the objectives”.

The deal, which was signed in April 2022 and was the first of its kind for a country in Latin America, outlined the players’ bonuses, allowances, travel requirements, and other necessities. Thus began a process, which was successful in large part due to “unity and mutual trust” between the union and the players. Every issue was the subject of negotiation and an explanation, according to Bryce.

“We completed classes and a comprehensive plan of study in negotiating. Negotiations become routine when you arrive as prepared as we did; they consist of giving and taking, saying “no” to this and “yes” to that. There were vested rights, but there was also a great deal of defining success by goals. That is how you persuade the management that the players desire to succeed and hence get rewards.

The accord is viewed as “a great example of working in a mature way and a call for every country to imitate Costa Rica” by the director general.

“The first is having the players, a strategic plan, knowing the target and the timeframe, and being proactive rather than reactive, he added.
