WRWC: Retirement and New Beginnings
Headline into the Paris Olympics in 2024. I started having chats with my chief. I was like, I’ve always been required to go to Japan. So several Black Leaves, so many New Zealand players have played in Japan. And had startling things to say about the country and the rugby and just being here.
So that was on the best of my list once I declared my leaving from New Zealand Sevens. So we ongoing that talk, and right from then was just a chance, not just for myself. But also for my wife and my daughter. I truly desired them to learn the love that Japan has for their people and all about Japan.
So it was a chance we just couldn’t, not take. Reaching Janna state Japanese, Maori, and English all in one sentence, was exciting. So we knew we were in the right place because of the people. Said Woodman-Wickliffe. The cultural similarities between Japan and New Zealand are something we have learned about earlier.
Portia has loved the atmosphere and how her daughter has been embraced into the culture despite some tasks. Nine times out of 10, you’ve gotten to have somebody that can speak the language. Luckily enough, my Fanon here, my cousin. Truly speaks both English Japanese and Maori. So it makes it a lot easier.

Women Rugby World Cup: Family, Culture, and Rugby
When they come to New Zealand. Not everybody speaks Japanese, the Women Rugby World Cup, and how dividing it can be. The girls, the ones who speak Japanese, and flat the ones who don’t speak Japanese. They’re truly, actually helpful, and they just kind of fall around you.
And they support you in such incredible ways. They’re all about what we call Manaakitanga, and assistant the person. Helping them feel relaxed in their space, and creating them feel similar they can be themselves. I think those are the likenesses that draw a lot of Maori people to Japanese culture.
They have a lot, and this is my partial skill of Japanese culture. What I’ve noted is that they have a lot of love for people, and they love to care for them. So I’ve loved it here, the Women Rugby World Cup, and so does my wife and even my daughter. Our daughter’s 12 and It’s remained hard for her since she’s the only 12-year-old here.
She’s having loads of adult talks. As much as people try to come down to her level. She’s having adult talks around adults, Women Rugby World Cup, but they just love her. The girls who can’t speak Japanese are truly, truly startling. She also gets chocolates, toys, or all when she comes to drill. So that’s the Manaakitanga or the support that the Japanese culture has.
