There were several notable firsts on Sunday, including the greatest player in history calling his first-ever game, the first thorough look at one of the biggest rule changes in recent memory, the appointment of eight head coaches to new positions, and the starting quarterback position for three first-round picks.

What we thought were the major firsts on Sunday:

Dynamic kickoff

The dynamic kickoff is moving quite nicely so far. The impact of the new dynamic kickoff, which was intended to improve upon last season’s historically low return rate of 22%, was unclear going into the regular season, even though 70% of kickoffs were returned during the preseason. Rookie receivers

The best rookie receivers were also largely silent, all casualties of the underlying dysfunction on their teams. Marvin Harrison Jr. of the Cardinals was seldom ever used in the offense. Brian Thomas Jr. of the Jaguars at least caught one of his four receptions on four targets for a touchdown. It was a reminder that no receiver, no matter how talented, can overcome unsteady passing and a faltering offense.
