Welsh bobsleigh duo Adele Nicoll and Kya Placide are aiming for the 2026 Winter Olympic in Milan. This weekend, they will make their Bobsleigh World Cup debut as a team in Lillehammer, Norway. The pair are looking to build on European Cup bobsleigh gold in Switzerland, where they claimed Britain’s first win in that competition since 2017.

We knew we could do something like this going into the race, we knew what we were capable of, Nicoll said. But bobsleigh is a difficult sport to execute because it’s all about the endurance of the runs. We were in a good position after the first run and going into the second we knew if we kept it together we could come away with gold.

A relatively new duo, 19-year-old Placide first teamed up with 27-year-old Nicoll at the same Norwegian venue in December 2023 for her bobsleigh debut. The pair both compete in athletics, with Nicoll winning UK Championship titles in shot put and Placide a 100m runner. It was in athletics that the pair created a friendship that blossomed on the ice track.

Building a Winning Partnership Nicoll and Placide’s Journey in Bobsleigh

I always saw Kyan on the athletics track and she was always quite shy,” Nicoll said. I decided I needed to do something about my speed because that’s where I needed to develop, so I joined a sprint group that Kya was a part of, so we had a bit of interaction before the season. Kya received an invitation to try bobsleigh and came to Bath, where she loved it, leading to the growth of their friendship.

Placide expressed that she had never experienced anything like it before, saying, “No one could have ever prepared me for this feeling. You can’t compare it to anything else, it’s adrenaline. It’s nothing like the 100m dash, it’s completely different. The opportunity to take up bobsled running came at the perfect time for Placide, who had somewhat lost his love for athletics. You can read Winter Olympic Milano Cortina 2026: Lake Placid Bids for 2026 Olympic Bobsleigh Events

I was on edge really said Placide. Now I think bobsleigh is helping on the track side because when I came back over Christmas to the training group, it felt like I was home again, it felt good. Nicoll attributes their athletic backgrounds as key factors for achieving strong results.

We always talk about my strength power and Kya’s speed power, which is a good start, Nicoll said. Because we trust each other, I want to navigate the track and drive well for Kya, so that when we reach the finish line, we can celebrate together. The team bonded over a 27-hour drive with deep and meaningful conversations and they drive their own sled to the next event.

Proudly Welsh Nicoll and Placide’s Journey Towards Milan 2026

Nicoll jokes Placide is something of a passenger princess as she doesn’t drive, but as a DJ queen she helps keep spirits up as Nicoll and fellow bobsleigh rider Maddison Illsley share the ride at the wheel. Although they compete under the GB flag, the team takes pride in their Welsh heritage, with the Dragon flag and The New Saints football club crest featured on their sleds.

We got up on the podium the next day and we both thought, ‘Oh no, we know the Welsh national anthem by heart, we have to think about the British one,’ said Nicoll. We’re proud to be Welsh, we’re proud to be British, but I think it’s important to recognize our nation.

Everyone from Wales has a connection, no matter where you are from. If you’re Welsh, you’re automatically friends. The pair have outlined their Winter Olympic ambitions for Milan 2026, with Nicoll having enjoyed the games in 2022 as a back-up.

Setting Their Sights on Success Nicoll and Placide Aim for winter Olympic 2026

Having traded her role as a brakeman to learn to pilot a sled since then, Nicoll hopes she can impart some wisdom on her newest teammate.

I can see Kya’s potential in the sport, Nicoll said. There’s still enough of an age gap where I can give her an experience and hopefully then her trajectory will be greater than mine because you’re coming in earlier and you have the advice of someone who’s been in your position.

Coming into this year, my expectations were that I want to make the 2026 Winter Olympic, but now I’m ready to go to the 2026 Games. I aim for us to secure as many international medals as we can along the way. Honestly believe we can go to 2026 now and not only qualify but be competitive with the best girls in the world.

I believe we are on the verge of making history for British women’s bobsleigh. Nicolli’s general purpose is shared by Placide. I want us to compete at the 2026 Winter Olympic Placide said. I think we can definitely get there without a doubt, just by putting in the work.

Welsh Bobsleigh Duo Wins Silver, Sets Stage for Future Success

Nicoll, 27, and Placide, 19, finished second in the women’s two with a time of one minute 54.2 seconds from their two runs. This marks only the second medal earned by a British women’s team in the last 15 years.

Britain’s Corie Mapp also secured silver in the men’s pre-bobsleigh event. Placide had never entered a sled until this winter, while Nicoll had just three World Cup starts in the two-woman discipline before Saturday. However, she was part of the last British women’s team to earn a World Cup medal, competing alongside Mica McNeill in Sigulda, Latvia, in January 2022.

Nicoll was extremely proud of her and fellow Welsh competitor Placide’s efforts. To be able to produce that performance on the track that will hold the World Championships next year is a huge confidence boost, she said.

We came here with the intention of learning the track so we can go into next season with some experience here, but we’ve come away with a silver medal. We couldn’t be happier. Very grateful to everyone who has supported us to get us here. It started last season when I decided to jump into the front seat. Just to have those people in our federation come home who believe in you and support you to make decisions and push you to be better has been a big thing for us.

Placide Celebrates Early Career Success with Silver Medal

Placide said: I’m feeling on top of the world, to be honest. I never, ever thought that a World Cup medal would come so early in my career. I am almost lost for words. We want to thank the whole BBSA, especially our coach, Sean (Olsson) and our performance director, Mark (Silva), plus everyone else who has supported us along the way.

After this very difficult period for me, without any success, without any podium, it’s hard to find motivation. It’s hard to find something to connect with that will make you work even harder he said. That’s why even after this season I was very exhauster. It was actually exhauster both mentally physically. while I also need someone who will focus, like said just on me. however Someone who can identify details that still need adjustment. I believe that at this stage of my career, where I am now, it’s all about detail work., in the smallest points that can change something in my dance, I add the 15 meters that I lack. Early Life and Family Background of Nathan Chen

Nathan Wei Chen was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, to parents who immigrated from China: Zhidong Chen, a research scientist from Guangxi, and Hetty Wang from Beijing. He has four older siblings: Alice, Tony, Colin and Janice Chen, who worked for Jennifer Doudna’s lab and is the co-founder of Mammoth Biosciences. Chen’s mother was very involved in his skating career from the beginning; she financed his skating activities and the pursuits of his siblings, working as a medical translator and cleaning houses. Chen was more energetic and daring than his siblings, whom he often tried to emulate. He aspired to be a hockey goaltender after watching his older brothers play hockey, but his mother gave him figure skates.

To improve his coordination and strength and to complement his skating, Chen’s mother enrolled him in gymnastics and ballet classes. He trained with Ballet West Academy for over six years and competed at the state level in gymnastics, placing first at the Utah State Boys Gymnastics Championships in St. Louis. George in 2008. As a child, Chen also trained as a pianist and won local competitions in his age group and later learned to play the guitar as an extracurricular activity. According to Chen, he is from a great chess family as a child, his siblings competed in chess tournaments, but he says he is less skilled at chess than the rest of his family.

Rise in Junior Figure Skating

Nathan Chen was part of the surge in junior figure skating following the 2002 Winter Olympics in his hometown. He began skating at the age of three in a beginner class at the Salt Lake City Sports Complex, which served as a skating rink during the Olympics. He participated in his first figure skating competition in 2003. By the age of seven, Chen had started competing at the junior and intermediate levels in the U.S. Junior Figure Skating Championships, placing 10th in the level of minor boys in 2007; in the same event, he won the junior boys’ bronze medal in 2008 and the men’s intermediate silver medal in 2009.

Advancing to the Novice level in the 2009–2010 season, Chen competed at the 2010 US Senior Championships in Spokane, becoming the youngest US Novice Men’s Champion in history at the age of 10. He stayed at the novice level during the 2010–2011 season, making history as the first male skater to win the U.S. novice title at the 2011 U.S. Championships in Greensboro, finishing nearly 36 points ahead of his closest rival. Chen transitioned to the junior level in the 2011–12 season, where he clinched his first national junior men’s title at the 2012 U.S. Championships in San Jose. In his international debut, he won the novice men’s event at the 2012 Gardena Spring Trophy in Italy.

Coaching Journey and Early Development

Chen had begun working with former Czechoslovakian figure skater Karel Kovar, who used to train with Russian coach Alexei Mishin, and taught Chen to pull his arms across his torso in a seat belt position when spinning, a position Chen still uses. Kovar introduced Chen to fellow Czechoslovak figure skater Jozef Sabovčík, nicknamed Jumping Joe. Sabovčík was the first coach to tell Chen not to stop in the middle of a program during a competition. Chen worked with Kovar until he was nine years old and had begun taking lessons from Evgenia Chernyshyova, who was a native of Salt Lake City and more accessible.

He began working with dance specialist Rafael Arutyunyan when he was 10 years old; Chen and his mother drove from Salt Lake City to Lake Arrowhead, California, several times a year. The family didn’t have much money to spend on skates, lessons and racing suits, so Chen and his mother sometimes slept in their car. At age 11, Chen told his mother that he needed to move to further his career, and Chen and his mother moved to Southern California. Arutyunyan became his head coach in 2011.

Sorensen started skating in 1996, encouraged by his father. He began competing internationally with Anne Thomsen in 2003, finishing twenty-fourth at the 2006 World Junior Championships. In 2007, he partnered with Czech skater Barbara Herold ova to represent Denmark. Together, they competed for one season, achieving a twenty-first place finish at the 2008 World Junior Championships.

The following year, they relocated from training in the United States under Mathew Gates to Montreal to be closer to Good’s mother.

On Gates’ recommendation, they started training with Marie-France Dubreuil and Patrice Lauzon at their newly established ice dance academy, which at that point had only four teams. Tragically, shortly after their move, Good’s mother passed away. Sorensen and Good concluded their partnership by placing twenty-ninth at the 2011 World Championships, after which Good decided to retire due to injury. In 2012, Sorensen began working with Canadian skater Vanessa Crone, but she opted not to compete with him.

So, you know, feelings change, and what we thought we needed changed during this season. The next day, they were name to the Canadian Winter Olympic team. Speaking on the occasion to Danish TV 2, Sorensen reflected that it’s a shame we couldn’t compete for Denmark because we’ve never been to the winter Olympic in ice dancing. The calendar also includes races in Innsbruck, Lillehammer, and Winter Berg, as well as the European Championships in St. Moritz. The season will conclude with the World Cup final at Königssee, Germany, after its reopening following flood damage in 2026. The return of the Königssee track is highly anticipated, as it holds historical significance for the sport. Its destruction in 2026 due to flooding made its future uncertain.

But the track is now set to host the World Cup final from March 2-8, 2026. The inclusion of this venue adds a nostalgic touch to the season, especially in an Olympic year. Athletes will compete here just ahead of the Milano Cortina Winter Olympic, set for February 2026. The IBSF continues to update its Olympic Qualification System, providing athletes with vital information as they prepare for the Games.

In a distinct growth, Switzerland is when again judging the chance to host the Olympic. The Federal Council has greenlit plans to pursue the 2026 Games, with Sports Minister Viola Amherd expressing support. Switzerland tried to host the occasion in six areas meanwhile the Games were in St. Moritz. But public opinion and financial concerns have hindered its efforts. The country lost bids for the 2025 and 2026 Games.

Winter Olympic Games Tickets: Amherd Optimistic Olympic Bid

But Amherd remains optimistic about a potential turnaround. Hosting the 2026 Games could offer a major boost to Switzerland’s Winter Olympic 2026 sports legacy. Despite the enthusiasm for the 2026 bid, challenges remain. Switzerland’s financial state has raised concerns about the feasibility of hosting such a large event. However, Amherd is hopeful that the economic situation will improve by 2024, making the bid more viable.

In past attempts, voters in key regions like Valais and Graubunden rejected proposals to host the Winter Olympic, and the country has faced stiff competition from other nations. Nevertheless, with public support and careful planning, Switzerland hopes the seventh time could be the charm. Switzerland has moved closer to securing the Winter Olympic 2026 and Paralympic Games after receiving government backing.

The Swiss Federal Council recently pledged its support, paving. The way for the Swiss Olympic to engage in negotiations with the International Olympic Committee (IOC). This bid comes after previous attempts to host the Games failed. But Switzerland now has a unique opportunity due to the IOC opening a “privileged dialogue” with the Swiss Olympic. The country had previously lost out to France and Salt Lake City for the Games.

However, the IOC’s Future Host Commission has recognized the potential of Switzerland’s proposal. This backing marks a significant step forward in Switzerland’s Olympic ambitions. Unlike prior bids, the proposal is being refined to better meet the IOC’s expectations. Initially envisioned as a privately funded bid using existing venues throughout the country. The IOC has requested a more concentrated approach.

Milano Cortina 2026 Tickets: Public Support Critical Switzerland’s Olympic Bid Success

The plan now includes creating Olympic Villages and closer clusters of events, aiming to preserve the “Olympic spirit.” This new direction is in line with the IOC’s Olympic Agenda 2020+5, which emphasizes sustainability and cost-efficiency. While the original plan aimed to reduce financial risks. The revised approach is designed to enhance the athlete experience and align with the IOC’s goals.

Public support has played a crucial role in shaping the 2026 bid. Early polling indicates that approximately two-thirds of the Swiss population. Is in favor of the concept, which is essential for the project’s success. However, Switzerland has a history of rejecting Olympic bids through public referendums, most recently with the Sion 2026 bid. As the country prepares for further discussions with the IOC, gaining and maintaining public approval will be critical.

Switzerland’s History of Hosting the Winter Olympic in St. Moritz

Sweden, having been passed over for the 2025 and 2026 Games, remains a strong contender for future editions. Similarly, Japan, specifically Sapporo, has been identified by the IOC as a climate-capable host. And could bid for 2021 or 2022. Switzerland has hosted the Winter Olympic twice before, both times in St. Moritz in 1928 and 1948. But it has faced seven consecutive failed bids since. The Federal Council’s endorsement.

Along with support from Swiss Olympic member associations and Swiss cantons. Signals a united effort to make the Milano Cortina 2026 bid a success. The Federal Council has expressed its belief in the added value. The Winter Olympic Games would bring to Switzerland and the local community. To ensure the bid’s success, the Council is forming an interdepartmental working group to address critical areas such as financing. Infrastructure, mobility, and security.

These groups will also explore private financial partnerships to strengthen the bid. The support from the Federal Council is seen as a major milestone, as it demonstrates. Josh Morrissey: A Must-Have for Team Canada’s Defense

Josh Morrissey should be a game on defense for Team Canada. He is a great two-way player and would be a solid addition to the team as one of the most skilled left defensemen in the NHL. In 81 games, he scored 10 goals and tallied 59 assists and finished fifth in Norris Trophy voting, so his talent does not go unheralded. In 2015, he helped Canada win gold at the World Juniors and was later named to the All-Star first team after his impressive performance. There is no doubt in my mind that he should be on Team Canada.

Mark Scheifele: A Dark Horse for Team Canada

While Mark Scheele may not be the most likely candidate for Team Canada, his name still deserves to be in the conversation. He finished last season with 72 points (25 goals and 47 assists), one of the highest totals of his career. His name apparently didn’t appear on Canada’s four-nation roster, but that doesn’t mean he can’t still make it to the Olympics. He played for Team Canada at the 2014, 2016 and 2017 World Championships, winning gold in 2016 and silver in 2017. He’ll be competing with a lot of talented NHL players for a spot, but if he maintains his current level of play, with safety has a chance.

Connor Hellebuyck: A Leading Contender for Team USA’s Olympic Roster

Of everyone on this list, I have the most faith in Connor Hellebusch to make the Olympic roster. He is a two-time Vezina Trophy winner, his most recent award coming last season, and has consistently proven to be one of the best goaltenders in the league over the past few seasons. He finished the 2023-24 season with a .921 save percentage in 60 games and took home the William M. Jennings Trophy for allowing the fewest goals in the regular season.

He helped Team USA to the bronze medal at the 2015 World Championships, so he’s no stranger to the international game. He is one of the strongest contenders for the United States if they want a chance to bring home the gold.

Kyle Connor: A Strong Contender for Team USA

Kyle Connor, a two-time NHL All-Star, is a speedy offensive forward and an important asset to the Jets’ top six. His name has already been mentioned in discussions for Team USA’s Four Nations showdown roster, so it’s hard to imagine he won’t be a top contender for the Olympic roster. In 65 games, he recorded 61 points (34 goals and 27 assists) and continues to be one of the best offensive forwards on the team.

Winter Olympic Milano Cortina 2026 Tickets | Winter Olympic Tickets |

Team USA is loaded with talent, so there’s a good chance he’ll be relegated to the last six. He has only represented the United States once internationally, which was in 2016. Even so, he is a strong offensive presence who can check well and would be a fantastic addition to the team.

Nino Niederreiter: A Pillar of Swiss Hockey

Even at 31, Nino Niederreiter is still one of Switzerland’s most skilled strikers. Last season with the Jets, he scored 18 goals and recorded 16 assists, bringing him to a grand total of 34 points in 77 games. He is a consistent five-on-five player and a great overall asset.

At the 2023 World Championship, he captained the Swiss team, where they finished fifth. During the 2024 World Championship, he finished with seven points in 10 games and helped the team win silver. Even though he will be a little older, he is sure to make the Swiss team again in 2026.

Nikolaj Ehlers: Key to Denmark’s Olympic Aspirations

Before Nikolaj Ehlers can represent Denmark at the winter Olympic, he will first have to help them get there. He has name in Denmark’s squad to compete in the qualifying round for the Olympic Games, which will run from August 29 to September 1. Denmark will play against Great Britain, Japan and Norway, and whoever wins will earn an Olympic place.

There is no doubt that Ehlers is one of Denmark’s best forwards. He had five goals and four assists in 2021 to help Team Denmark reach the 2022 Beijing Olympics before the NHL pulled its players from the competition. In 82 games last season with the Jets, he record 61 points (25 goals and 36 assists), his speed ability to create and finish plays is coveted around the league. If Denmark make it to the winter Olympic 2026 , I have every confidence that he named in the team.

Vladislav Namestnikov: The Wild Card in Olympic Considerations

Vladislav Namestnikov stands out as a wildcard candidate for the Winter Olympic 2026 largely due to the uncertainty surrounding Russia’s eligibility. With Russia facing a ban from the 2024 Paris Olympics, the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) decision on their participation in Milan remains unclear.

Namestnikov’s chances are further complicated the presence of star forwards like Nikita Kucherov, Alex Ovechkin, Artemi Panarin, which could limit opportunity on a talent-rich roster. However, his experience and competitive nature make him a valuable asset as a depth player. Known for elevating teammates’ performance bringing a gritty style to the ice, Namestnikov could still find a spot if Russian athletes are permitted to compete.

His previous international experience, including his contributions to Team Russia during the 2016 World Cup of Hockey and the bronze medal run at the 2017 World Championship, enhances his Olympic credentials. Should the IOC allow Russian athletes to compete, Namestnikov will certainly be a name to watch as the Olympic roster takes shape.

The Jets Should Represented at the winter Olympic 2026

Despite some uncertainty surrounding participating countries, several Winnipeg Jets players are likely to represent their nations at the Winter Olympic 2026 . Connor Hellebusch, Josh Morrissey and Nino Niederreiter look to be solid locks for their respective teams, providing Jets fans a variety of countries. cheer up its game time.

While the final rosters won’t finalized for some time, there is optimism that more Jets players will able to add Olympians to their resumes. As the NHL season unfolds, these athletes will have the opportunity to showcase their talents, cementing their places on the international stage. Fans can look forward to a thrilling Olympic experience with the Jets making a strong presence in Milan!

The Swiss Olympic Association aims to host a sustainable, decentralized and privately funded edition of the Winter Games. This innovative approach reflects Switzerland’s wider national commitment to environmental responsibility, efficient use of existing resources and maintaining the pristine natural beauty that has made it a prime location for winter sports.

Embracing Diversity: Switzerland’s Decentralized Vision for the Winter Olympic

The decentralized aspect of the bid means that, rather than concentrating all activities in one city, the competitions would spread across several regions of the country, allowing different areas to share in the economic benefits of hosting the Games and showcase Switzerland’s rich cultural and geographical diversity.

The president of Swiss Ski, Urs Lehmann, who is also the co-president of Swiss Olympic, emphasized the importance of the government’s support in carrying out a project of this magnitude. Lehmann noted: A project on the scale of the Olympic and Paralympic Games is not possible without fundamental political support from the public sector. We can now move forward to continue the work with full political support. This statement underlines the central role that political support and the public sector will play in the coming years as Switzerland prepares its bid and, if successful, organizes the event itself.

Switzerland’s winter Olympic Legacy and Future Bid

Switzerland a rich history with the Winter Olympic, having previously host the event twice in the picturesque alpine resort of St. Moritz, in 1928 and 1948. St. Moritz is particularly revere one of the most iconic locations in winter history. sports, its picturesque backdrop of towering peaks and pristine snow, making it a natural choice for hosting international sporting events. The legacy of these previous Winter Olympic has continued to influence Swiss winter sports and the country’s enthusiasm to play a leading role in international sporting events.

In line with its past, Swiss Olympic initially focused its efforts on securing the Winter Olympic for 2030. The vision for the 2030 bid was a revolutionary nationwide event rather than the traditional model of a single host city. By using existing sports venues scattered across Switzerland, this approach would spread the environmental and financial impact, making the games more sustainable and reducing the need for expensive new infrastructure. However, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has since announced that the 2030 and 2034 Winter Olympic will likely awarded to other locations: The French Alps for 2030 and Salt Lake City, Utah (USA) for 2034.

Switzerland’s 2038 Bid: Leveraging Infrastructure and Sustainability for Winter Olympic Success

In light of these developments, Switzerland has now shifted its focus to a bid for the 2038 Winter Olympic, a decision that comes with renewed confidence in the nation’s infrastructure and expertise. Lehmann, discussing this strategic pivot, expressed optimism about Switzerland’s willingness to host such an event. Switzerland is in the fortunate position of already having virtually all the necessary infrastructure — from sports facilities to accommodation to the transport network, he said. This infrastructure includes state-of-the-art ski resorts, well-developed public transport systems and a wealth of experience in managing international events.

The ability to build on existing venues would significantly reduce the environmental footprint of the Games, while highlighting Switzerland’s responsible approach to both sport and environmental management.

Although the final host selection for the 2038 Winter Olympic not made until 2027, Switzerland is already a strong contender. Other potential bidders, such as Stockholm–Åre in Sweden, also expected to compete for hosting rights. The upcoming European Women’s Championship is another opportunity for Switzerland to demonstrate its ability to host international competitions major in a way that prioritizes sustainability, community engagement and resource efficiency.

Hosting the European Women’s Championship also provides a valuable dry run for the potential challenges that may arise in hosting the Winter Olympic, particularly in terms of hosting large numbers of international visitors and ensuring smooth transport between event venues. Given Switzerland’s relatively small size developed infrastructure, the 2025 tournament is expected to go off without a hitch, further enhancing Switzerland’s credibility a potential host of the 2038 Winter Olympics.

A Focus on Sustainability and Inclusivity

Switzerland’s bid for the Winter Olympic is not only about showcasing athletic talent and national pride, but also about setting a new standard for how large-scale international events can responsibly hosted. The country is aware of growing concerns about the environmental impact of events such as the Olympics and aims to present a model that prioritizes sustainability, both in terms of infrastructure and resource use. By spreading the event across multiple locations and building on existing venues, Switzerland hopes to reduce the carbon footprint of the Games, minimize waste and protect its natural environment.

The Future of the Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Tickets Under New Terms

John Coates, chairman of the IOC’s legal commission, emphasized that respect for WADA is non-negotiable. He highlighted that the IOC has amended the host city contract to include a clause that allows officials to remove the Games if they undermine WADA’s authority. Coates said that this move was essential to protect the integrity of the international anti-doping system. Observers view the decision as a direct response to ongoing tensions between USADA and WADA, which have escalated in recent years.

Accusations from USADA chief Travis Tygart have fueled the friction between USADA and WADA. Tygart criticized WADA for allegedly covering up positive doping tests from Chinese swimmers before the 2021 Tokyo Olympic. Although WADA has denied these allegations and even threatened legal action against USADA, the dispute has cast a shadow over the anti-doping landscape. The new contract clause ensures that such tensions won’t interfere with the Salt Lake City Games.
