Winter Olympic Snowboarder Wanted by FBI for Cocaine Distribution and Murder

Ryan James Wedding, a once-prominent Canadian Winter Olympic snowboarder, represented Canada at the 2002 Winter Olympic in Salt Lake City, competing in the men’s parallel giant slalom. Finishing 24th in his event, wedding showcased potential that led many to believe he could achieve further successes in his athletic career. However, following his tenure as an athlete, Wedding’s life took a significant and troubling turn. Authorities allege that after serving a brief prison sentence for drug-related charges, he transitioned from a promising athlete to a major player in the international drug trade. This transformation raises critical questions about the pressures faced by retired athletes and how some may resort to illegal activities as a means of financial support.

The Drug Trafficking Operation

The charges against Wedding detail a complex and sophisticated drug trafficking operation believed to have been smuggling cocaine from Colombia into both Canada and the United States. Reports indicate that this organization was moving approximately 60 tons of cocaine annually, utilizing semi-trucks to transport shipments across long distances.

Such a scale of operation implies a high level of organization and deep connections with established criminal networks, including ties to the notorious Sinaloa cartel in Mexico, which is infamous for its violent tactics and extensive drug smuggling routes.

The logistics involved in smuggling cocaine across international borders are staggering. It requires significant operational capabilities, including sourcing the drugs, managing transportation routes, and evading law enforcement. The use of semi-trucks not only facilitates the transport of large quantities but also highlights the operational sophistication of the group. Criminal networks often employ various tactics to obscure their activities, making it difficult for authorities to intercept shipments. For instance, they may use false documentation, shift routes frequently, and rely on corrupt insiders to facilitate their operations.

Violent Retaliation and Criminal Network

Wedding’s operation has been linked to violent incidents, notably the murder of two family members in Canada, a gruesome act of retaliation for a stolen drug shipment. This incident starkly highlights the brutal realities of the drug trade, where disputes over territory, shipments, and debts can escalate into lethal confrontations. U.S. authorities have emphasized the severity of the crimes associated with Wedding’s group, which has resulted in numerous arrests across various countries, illustrating the extensive reach and influence of their operations.

The murders attributed to Wedding’s group are particularly alarming as they reflect a culture of violence that often accompanies organized crime. Such acts not only lead to tragic loss of life but also instill a climate of fear within communities affected by drug trafficking. The implications of this violence extend beyond individual tragedies, complicating law enforcement efforts as it may intimidate potential witnesses and deter cooperation with authorities. Moreover, communities plagued by such violence often experience broader social and economic repercussions, leading to a cycle of crime and instability.

Legal Ramifications and International Efforts

U.S. prosecutors are pursuing a wide array of charges against Wedding, including conspiracy to distribute cocaine and murder. The FBI’s offer of a $50,000 reward for information leading to his arrest reflects the urgency and seriousness with which they are approaching this case.

The complexities involved in international law enforcement collaboration are underscored by the need to navigate extradition processes and coordinate efforts across borders to combat drug trafficking effectively. You can read Winter Olympic Japan’s Snowboarding Prodigy Eyes Gold at Milano Cortina 2026

The potential legal ramifications for Wedding are severe. If convicted, he faces substantial prison time, which could have lasting effects not only on his life but also on the broader fight against organized crime. The legal processes surrounding cases like this often require extensive investigations, and authorities remain committed to dismantling the criminal networks that perpetuate drug trafficking. As the case progresses, it may set important precedents for how similar cases are prosecuted in the future.

Winter Olympic: The Aftermath of Athletic Glory

Wedding’s case serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences athletes can face after their sports careers end. It raises essential discussions about the support systems available for retired athletes, particularly in high-pressure environments where financial instability can lead to poor choices. The contrast between Wedding’s winter Olympic past and his current criminal charges illustrates a tragic downfall, prompting many to ponder how a promising career can take such a drastic turn.

The pressures faced by athletes after retirement can be profound. Many athletes struggle with identity loss, financial uncertainty, and the lack of a structured support system. The transition from a life of training and competition to one of uncertainty can be incredibly challenging. For some athletes, this uncertainty may lead to risky behaviors, including involvement in illegal activities. The high expectations placed on athletes can create a significant mental toll, further exacerbating these issues.

Moreover, the sports community often lacks adequate resources for mental health support, financial planning, and career transition guidance. This gap can leave retired athletes vulnerable to exploitation or poor decision-making, as they navigate the difficult landscape of life after sports.

Winter Olympic: Investigating the Fallout

The investigation into Wedding and his associates is ongoing, with law enforcement committed to dismantling the network responsible for considerable harm in both winter Olympic Canada and the U.S. Authorities continue to track down remaining fugitives and seize assets linked to the operation, which could lead to further revelations about the scope and scale of the trafficking network. The implications of this case extend beyond immediate arrests, highlighting the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in North America and the challenges faced by authorities in curtailing such expansive criminal enterprises.

The significance of these investigations is not just confined to the individuals involved; they also have broader implications for communities affected by drug trafficking. Effective strategies to combat such operations often require a multifaceted approach, which includes collaboration between various law enforcement agencies and community outreach programs aimed at prevention and education. These efforts are crucial in addressing the root causes of drug trafficking and creating safer communities.

Winter Olympic: A Dream Turned Nightmare

Ryan Wedding’s story represents a dramatic contrast—a once-celebrated athlete now accused of serious crimes. This situation reflects broader issues at the intersections of sports, crime, and society, raising important questions about the support available for athlete’s post-career and the persistent threat posed by organized crime in the drug trade. As this case unfolds, it will likely continue to attract attention for its legal implications and its impact on public perceptions of athletes who fall from grace.

Furthermore, Wedding’s case emphasizes the need for improved support systems for athletes transitioning out of competitive sports. Addressing the psychological and financial challenges they face could help mitigate the risk of turning to illicit activities. Society must reflect on this troubling narrative and focus on preventive measures that support athletes in navigating life after sports.

Winter Olympic A Call to Action for Athlete Support

Providing resources that ensure athletes can thrive without resorting to crime is essential in fostering a healthier environment for those who dedicate their lives to sports.

Ultimately, the story of Ryan Wedding serves as both a cautionary tale and a call to action. It underscores the importance of holistic support for athletes, particularly as they navigate the complex and often challenging transition from competitive sports to life beyond the spotlight. As we consider the implications of his case, the emphasis must remain on creating pathways for success that do not involve criminal activities, ensuring that the next generation of athletes has the resources and support necessary to flourish.

Pre-Winter Olympic Spotlight: Sakamoto and Malinin

Japan’s three-time women’s world champion, Kaori Sakamoto, will take center stage the following week at Skate Canada in Halifax, where Malinin will also compete. Malinin captured his first world title last season with a stunning quadruple jump free skate in Montreal, finishing over 20 points ahead of his competitors. The 19-year-old, nicknamed the Quad God, is now the pre-winter Olympic favorite following the retirement of two-time world champion and three-time winter Olympic medalist Uno Shoma from Japan.

I always have that mindset where I want to get better and better Malinin stated, as he aims for a third consecutive Skate America gold. He warmed up at the Lombardia Trophy last month in Italy, winning gold again by more than 20 points over Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama. The gap with Ilia something I felt last season, said three-time world silver medalist Kagiyama. This season, I want to close that gap and even surpass him, added the two-time winter Olympic silver medalist.

Winter Olympic Aspirations: Sakamoto and Kagiyama

Sakamoto, 24, had a rocky start to the season at the Lombardia Trophy, finishing third, but insisted. If I keep working hard, the confidence will come. Sakamoto and Kagiyama’s Winter Olympic ambitions were boosted when they finally received their silver medals for the team competition at the Beijing 2022 Games during a ceremony at the 2024 Paris winter Olympic Games.

Figure Skating from the United States and Japan received their medals after Russia was downgraded from gold to bronze due to Kamila Valieva’s four-year doping ban. The moment I got a medal after waiting for two-and-a-half years made me want to win another one in Mila even more said Sakamoto, who also took the women’s bronze behind closed doors at the Covid-hit Beijing Games.

History of Figure Skating in the winter Olympic

Figure skating is one of the oldest sports on the Olympic Winter Games programme. In fact, it dates back to before the Olympic Winter Games themselves, a figure skating competition held at both the Olympic Games of London 1908 and Antwerp 1920.

The list of Olympic figure skating legends ranges from Sweden’s Gillis Grafström, the first to win three gold medals, to more recent stars such as Japan’s Hanyu Yuzuru.

In recent years, the USA’s Ilia Malinin became the first (and so far only) male or female skater to successfully land the quadruple Axel in competition, while Japan’s Sakamoto Kaori also made history by completing an undefeated season.

Sakamoto and Malinin Shine in Recent Competitions

Sakamoto, also a gold medalist at the Beijing 2022 winter Olympics, was the leader in the short program and the preliminary race. I’m very happy Sakamoto said. My rival is the same person I used to.  I could have done better.  I want to show myself that I did a great job. Belgium’s Nina Pinzarrone, who was third after the short event, finished fourth with a score of 194.91.

Ilia Malinin: Innovating on Ice

After winning the World Championships last year, American soccer player Ilia Malinin is trying to change his game on the field.

No, this isn’t another article about how the 19-year-old is stepping up his free skate, although he plans to do just that – if not surprisingly, as he’s taking things personally.

The main reason I decided to add it just a character I wanted to learn to cut so I could it on the show when I heard that… they accepted cutting to get into regular sports,” said Malinin, who praises the brainchild. about her ease of learning the trick of the challenge, in the newspapers ahead of this week’s Skate America competition.

From there, I just came up with the idea that maybe I’ll add it to my routine, too. I’m thinking of ways I can actually add to it as well in the future, he added later. Like, adding eggs or other spices to the body. But perhaps, more importantly, Malinin is trying to turn the script (pun very much intended) on his athleticism.

The Beginning of a Snowboarding Prodigy

Born on July 19, 2005, in Ushiku, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, Ogiwara Hiroto’s journey into the world of snowboarding started early. Ushiku, located about 50 kilometers east of Tokyo, isn’t known for its snowy winters, yet Ogiwara found his calling on the slopes thanks to his father, who introduced him to the sport when he was just three years old. What started as a casual hobby quickly became a passion, and by the age of nine, Ogiwara had already performed a backside 1080 three full rotations that took the snowboarding world by storm, going viral online and marking him as a future star to watch. While most kids his age were focused on school and play, Ogiwara was honing his skills on the slopes.

In 2017, at the age of 12, he earned his professional snowboarding license while still a student in junior high school. It was an unprecedented achievement that signaled his early mastery of the sport and set the stage for a string of significant milestones that would follow in the years to come.

Early Career and Breakthrough Performances

Ogiwara’s professional debut came with much fanfare, and it didn’t take long for him to make his mark on the competitive snowboarding scene. Just four years after earning his pro license, he secured his first national title in Japan, which he successfully defended the following year. His rapid rise continued when he participated in the World Rookie Finals, an elite competition for under-18 snowboarders, in both 2021 and 2022. The event brings together the best young talents in the sport, and Ogiwara proved he was more than capable of holding his own against the world’s finest emerging riders.

However, it was in 2022 that Ogiwara truly shocked the snowboarding community and cemented his place in history. At The Nines event in Crans-Montana, Switzerland a biannual competition that often serves as a platform for groundbreaking tricks and innovations Ogiwara became the first person ever to land a backside 2160. This trick, which involves six full rotations in the air, had been thought to be almost impossible. Yet, on his sixth attempt, Ogiwara pulled it off, earning him international acclaim and setting a new benchmark for what was possible in winter Olympic snowboarding.

I’m very happy Ogiwara said after successfully completing the trick, an understatement for what was one of the most significant moments in the sport’s history. His achievement not only demonstrated his exceptional technical skill but also his mental fortitude, as landing such a complex trick requires immense focus, precision, and confidence. A Champion on the World Stage

Following his groundbreaking 2160, Ogiwara’s career continued on an upward trajectory. The 2023-2024 season was a breakout year for the teenage phenom, as he secured his first World Cup victory at the FIS Big Air event in Chur, Switzerland. The win was particularly special, as it came during the Big Air Chur festival, a highly anticipated annual event that attracts some of the top talent in the world of snowboarding. Not content with just one win, Ogiwara capped off the season with another victory in Europe, this time at the European Cup in Corvatsch.

The momentum didn’t stop there. Ogiwara kicked off his 2024-2025 campaign in style, winning the New Zealand Freestyle Nationals in Cardrona last month. With each competition, the young snowboarder has shown that he’s not just a one-trick pony; his performances demonstrate consistent growth, versatility, and a drive to keep pushing the boundaries of the sport.

Preparing for winter olympic Milano Cortina 2026

As the snowboarding world gears up for another thrilling season, all eyes will be on Ogiwara as he prepares for Milano Cortina 2026. With the winter Olympic Games less than two years away, he is entering a crucial period in his career. The pre-Olympic season, often referred to as the “penultimate season” for athletes, is where many fine-tune their skills and ramp up their performances in preparation for the world’s biggest stage. For Ogiwara, this period is about more than just maintaining his current form it’s about reaching new heights.

In interviews, Ogiwara has been clear about his ambitions. Eventually, I want to win a gold medal at the X Games. Then the winter Olympic Games he said. The X Games, often regarded as the pinnacle of freestyle snowboarding and extreme sports, would be a natural stepping stone for Ogiwara as he sets his sights on Olympic glory. By the time Milano Cortina 2026 rolls around, Ogiwara will be 20 years old, entering what many believe will be his peak physical years. For the next Games, I’ll be 20, when I should be in my best physical condition. I’ll be locked in for that he added.

While Ogiwara’s talent and accomplishments have already made him a star, the next two years will be critical in determining whether he can translate his individual successes into winter Olympic gold. The Winter Olympic are a completely different stage, where the pressure is immense, and the competition fierce. But if anyone is poised to rise to the occasion, it’s Ogiwara.

Ogiwara’s Journey Preparing for the Winter Olympic

Despite his young age, Ogiwara faces significant challenges in the lead-up to winter Olympic Milano Cortina 2026. The level of competition in winter Olympic snowboarding has never been higher, with athletes from countries like Canada, the United States, and Norway consistently pushing the envelope in terms of technical prowess and creativity. However, Ogiwara has already proven that he’s capable of innovation, and his ability to perform under pressure sets him apart from many of his peers.

One of the key aspects of Ogiwara’s preparation will be maintaining his physical and mental health. Winter Olympic Snowboarding, particularly at the level Ogiwara competes at, is incredibly demanding on the body. Injuries are a constant risk, and managing both training and recovery will be essential if he is to be in top form for the Games.

Additionally, the mental toll of competing at such a high level can be significant, but Ogiwara’s calm demeanor and focus suggest that he has the resilience necessary to handle the pressures that come with being a top-tier athlete.

A Future winter Olympic Champion?

As Ogiwara Hiroto continues to break records and set new standards in snowboarding, the world eagerly anticipates what he will achieve next. His journey from a snowboarding prodigy in Japan to a global superstar has been nothing short of extraordinary, and it seems likely that his best is yet to come. I just want to enjoy this moment, take it all in and then come back to it when I feel ready she explained. The 21-year-old had previously said in an interview with The New York Times that she would likely retire by the time she was 26. However, she will reach that milestone in the year of the winter Olympic Milano Cortina Games.

Chloe Kim’s Journey Balancing Success and Mental Health

Kim has also been vocal about her mental health issues, but told Cheddar that she is currently doing better. I think a lot of the pressure I feel is mostly from myself and the pressure I put on myself she said. As a professional athlete and also as someone who really loves what they do, I can’t help but have high expectations for myself, right? I want to be the best snowboarder I can be, and if I don’t I can do it, it’s disappointing.

She explained that attending school at Princeton University helped her when she started to lose her love for sports.  It was nice to know I could make friends with people who weren’t snowboarders she said. It was nice to have that kind of separation and get away from the thought of working.

Kim became an overnight sensation after becoming the youngest woman to win a winter Olympic gold medal in snowboarding at the 2018 Winter Olympic – she was just 17 years old. At the 2022 Winter Olympic, she successfully defended her gold medal in the halfpipe, making her the first woman ever to win gold in the event. Chloe Kim: A Trailblazer at the Winter Olympics

Chloe Kim is no stranger to being first. At just 14, she became the youngest gold medalist at the X Games. Three years later, she won gold at the 2018 Winter Olympic in PyeongChang, making her the youngest female Winter Olympic gold medalist in her sport.

However, being in the spotlight has its challenges. My life changed overnight after my big win Kim said, reflecting on the surge of attention following the winter Olympic. It was tough to adjust… I felt really angry for a long time. After returning home, she even tossed her gold medal into the trash. The following year, she broke her ankle and started at Princeton, but returned to competitive snowboarding when the campus shut down in March 2020. Kim shone again at the 2022 Winter Olympic in Beijing, winning consecutive gold medals in halfpipe, becoming the first woman to achieve this. Although she attempted a 1260 (three and a half spins) but didn’t land it, she remained resilient. I’ve reached a point in my career where I want to enjoy it she shared. I want to be kind to myself.

Chloe Kim: A Winter Olympic Champion and Trailblazer

In January, at X Games Aspen, she landed a 1260—the first woman to do so—and won her seventh title.  Shortly after her win, The Cut spoke with Kim about her run, her excitement for women’s sports, and what these milestones mean to her. Chloe Kim was all smiles after winning her second Winter Olympic gold medal with victory in the women’s snowboard halfpipe at Beijing 2022. It feels so surreal she said after the final in the Zhangjiakou Mountains on Thursday (Feb 10). The American became the first female Snowboarding to successfully defend her title.

Kim dominated the leaderboard in the final at Genting Snow Park as a fierce battle broke out for the other podium places and was quick to thank his team and family afterwards. I worked so hard for four years to come back here and do this again, she added. I’m so proud of myself and I’m so thankful for everyone who supported me even when I decided to take time off to go to school. I mean, it’s just about the world.

The Team USA star scored 94.00 in the first round, which proved enough for the crown despite having a poor practice the morning of the competition. I had the worst workout ever. I probably landed my run twice when I’m used to landing it eight times normally, and that puts you in a weird space. He felt so inconsistent.

Chloe Kim’s Journey: Embracing Challenges and Friendship

I didn’t want to feel all that pressure of having to land my first safety run (in competition). I was overwhelmed with excitement when I managed to land it on the first try and it gave me a lot of chances to try something new (in the second and third rounds). She fell after two runs, attempting the historic cab 1260’s.

I just learned them fairly recently and I’ve done them quite a bit, but I haven’t really done them in this halfpipe, so I was curious to see what would happen. It definitely didn’t go my way, but that’s okay. I did it once in practice and it went well. We’ll try another day.

Kim also hugged freestyle skiing gold medalist Ailing (Eileen) GU on the side of the competition area, and the Chinese freestyle skier cheered on the American during the competition. It was mostly a lot of screaming and a lot of emotion (laughs). Eileen is such a sweetheart and I have had the pleasure of getting to know her and become her friend over the past two years. I am so proud to meet her and so excited to support her in the next two events. She’s crazy.

Chloe Kim: Family, Friendship, and the Winter Olympic Journey

My family texts me every day. I mean, it sucks that they’re not all here, but I can feel their love from thousands of miles away, Kim added. I’m excited to go home and see my family, my dog and my boyfriend, and it’s just that the goggles are getting a little tan, but I’m looking forward to what’s to come.

Kim was the youngest woman to win a Winter Olympic gold in snowboarding when she won the PyeongChang 2018 title for Team USA at the age of 17, and has been open about the struggles she’s had following that success. She also encouraged Team USA fans to tune in to Shaun White’s last Winter Olympic final, the men’s halfpipe Friday morning in China (Thursday night in the U.S.), saying. Early Influences and Media Appearances

At the age of nine, Kildow met Olympic gold medalist Picabo Street, whom she admires as a hero and role model. This encounter made a lasting impression on Street, who later became Kildow’s skiing mentor. When Street first watched Kildow compete in a 1999 event, she was struck by Kildow’s natural ability, noting, The faster she went, the bigger her smile. Kildow trained in Colorado for several years before her family relocated to Vail in the late 1990s.

Kildow completed her education through the University of Missouri High School, an online program offered by the university’s Center for Distance and Independent Study. She is fluent in German. At the 2010 Winter Olympic in Vancouver, Vonn planned to compete in all five women’s alpine events. On February 10, she revealed that she had badly bruised her leg in training last week. Vonn said the pain from her injury was excruciating and she would find it difficult to compete in the Winter Olympics. Due to the unusually warm weather and resulting poor snow conditions, many of the alpine skiing events were moved, giving Vonn extra time to recover. On February 17, in her first race, Vonn won downhill gold at Whistler Blackcomb, beating long-time American rival Julia Mancuso by 0.56 seconds and becoming the first American woman to win Olympic downhill gold.

Challenges at the 2010 Winter Olympics

In her second race, the super combined, Vonn finished first in the downhill leg of the race. In the slalom portion, however, she crashed when she failed to ski around the right gate. Vonn said her legs weren’t the problem. Gold and silver were won Maria Riesch and Julia Mancuso respectively.

In her third race, the super-G, Vonn finished third behind Andrea Fischbacher and Tina Maze, 0.74 seconds behind Fischbacher’s winning time. Afterwards, Vonn said she didn’t ski the last part of the course as aggressively as she could have and lost the race as a result.

In her fourth race, the giant slalom, fog affected visibility. Vonn crashed on her first run, resulting in a broken fourth finger and her disqualification from the event. In her fifth event, the slalom, Vonn lost control and went over a gate, disqualifying her from the event.

Is Lindsey Vonn Making a Comeback to Ski Racing?

Lindsey Vonn achieved a remarkable 82 victories on the World Cup circuit before announcing her retirement in 2019. At the time, she was the all-time winningest female ski racer and second only to Ingemar Stenmark’s long-standing record of 86 wins.

Now, at the age of 39, rumors are swirling that Vonn is returning to the World Cup this season. Here’s what we know. Ski Racing Media is among the first media to cover this story. Recently, Vonn seen skiing in New Zealand with Red Bull and a former coach.

She then headed to the Rettenbachferner Glacier in Sölden, Austria, to train with the HEAD race team, a long-time sponsor for her skis, boots, and outerwear. Vonn then shared a few photos with her followers this morning, October 9, 2024, with a cliff-hanging caption:

It’s been an incredible last week. Being back in the mountains is where I find so much joy, she said she. It’s my natural habitat… even if I’m not a fan of the cold, haha! Excited to share more. Vonn’s excited comments have her fans eagerly anticipating more updates. Olympian Ted Ligety commented with a ‘simple eye’.

Speculation on Vonn’s Potential Return to the Winter Olympic

Speculation about Vonn’s return is also growing thanks to a new FIS rule that gives spots to decorated athletes. The new rule states a Wild Card may awarde to athletes who have won either anOverallWorld Cup Globe, an Event Globe (DH, SG, GS or SL) provided they have at least five (5) wins of the World Cup), Olympic Gold Medal (Individual) or World Championship Gold Medal (Individual).

Winter Olympic Opening Ceremony Tickets | Olympic Alpine Skiing Tickets

Before the rule, skiers would have to qualify with active FIS points in sanctioned competitions. Considering Vonn hasn’t competed in five years, this is her golden ticket to making a comeback, so to speak. Oh, and in case you were wondering, Vonn has four all-around titles, 16 event titles, 82 wins, one winter Olympic gold medal and two World Championship gold medals. In short, she far exceeds the minimum qualifications to secure a spot on the World Cup circuit.

If Vonn applies for a wild card spot this season, she will join Austrian legend Marcel Hirscher, another highly accomplished alpine skier who previously retired and applied for a wild card. Hirscher, 35, will now compete for the Netherlands in the season opener in Sölden on October 27, 2024. Vonn finished in a variety of disciplines throughout her storied career, but the speed events are where she dominated. Considering the first Downhill and Super-G races of the season are scheduled to take place in Beaver Creek, Colorado in early December, that seems to where Vonn will attempt a comeback, if she does at all.

Alice Robinson a Rising Star in Alpine Skiing

Teenage sensation Alice Robinson set for big things in alpine skiing this season. The 17-year-old has already been to one winter Olympics, representing New Zealand at PyeongChang 2018, but last season saw her make stunning progress. Just a month after winning giant slalom gold at the World Junior Championships, Robinson finished second to Mikaela Shiffrin in the final World Cup slalom of the season in Soldeu, Andorra.

This will be her second full World Cup campaign and, with no World Championships or Olympic Games to build on, the teenager has the chance to add to her experience and perhaps claim a first win in the senior ranks. The winter Olympic Channel caught up with Robinson ahead of the season-opening giant slalom in Soelden, Austria.

Mikaela Shiffrin Concludes Challenging Season

Alpine skiing star Mikaela Shiffrin has wrapped up the most challenging season of her career with an impressive 106th World Cup podium finish. The American placed second in the giant slalom at the finals in Lenzerheide, behind Alice Robinson, who secured her first win of the season.

The 19-year-old Kiwi was fourth after the first run but made a strong push in the second, overtaking first-round leader Shiffrin by 0.28 seconds. Slovenia’s Meta Hrovat finished third, 0.48 seconds behind Robinson.

With her 106th top-three finish in 192 starts, Shiffrin has reached the podium in 55% of her World Cup races. Petra Vlhova, the overall winner of the 2021 World Cup, looked fatigued in 11th place, while Super G globe winner Lara Gut-Behrami opted to end her first run early.

Shiffrin Reflects on a Challenging Season

Marta Bassino, who had already clinched the GS globe, finished 7th in the season’s final race. “A lot of things went completely differently this season, and I had a lot of personal uncertainty,” Shiffrin remarked after the season finale slalom on Saturday.

While the season has quite successful, it was relatively less so compared to others. Shiffrin’s previous season ended on a different note, as she faced the tragic death of her father, Jeff, in early February 2020, followed by a global pandemic that kept her off the slopes for several months.

Shiffrin Looks Ahead to Winter Olympic

The combination of personal tragedies and COVID restrictions affected her summer training and testing of new equipment.  This season, after missing her Soelden debut due to a back injury, Shiffrin made her long-awaited comeback in Levi, Finland, where she finished second. In December, she returned to winning form in Courchevel, France, followed by slalom victories in Flachau in January and Jasna this month. Her performance at the 2021 Cortina World Championships was particularly notable, where she won four medals, including a gold in the combined event, marking her sixth title overall. As the season comes to a close, Shiffrin is already looking ahead to next season and the Winter Olympics in Beijing, indicating that she may adjust her schedule to prioritize her fitness and health.

The Training Life Building Blocks of Rosie Brennan’s World-Class Winter Olympic Cross-Country Skiing Career

Rosie Brennan roller-skied east along Rabbit Creek Road in South Anchorage, navigating rocks, passing vehicles and a steady uphill. It was a blustery day in late September and she had a long way to go. Brennan, 35, one of the top winter olympic skiers in recent years, perceives time differently than most. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday translate into power days, interval days, and volume days on her calendar. Her training-centric lifestyle is typical of the elite in her sport, and she hardly retires year-round as she works with the APU Nordic Ski Center’s Elite Varsity Team.

Rosie Brennan a Winter Olympic Contender on the Rise

The training volumes required to be competitive are so high that you can never be disappointed Brennan stated. In her 13th professional skiing season, she has proof that the plan works. Following in the footsteps of other elite APU skiers, including Winter Olympic gold medalist Kikkan Randall, she has emerged as a leader at APU and a standout on a U.S. national team with high expectations.

She has 12 podiums and two victories on the World Cup circuit, the sport’s major international leagues. Ranked in the top 10 of the overall World Cup season standings three times. She is a two-time Winter Olympic who narrowly missed the podium in a sprint event in 2022.

Every year gets better, said APU University Elite Team coach Erik Flora. Right now she’s skiing faster than ever before, and she’s skiing with better technical work … higher fitness, higher strength. It took a while to hit her stride.

Brennan, from Park City, Utah, remembers a rude awakening when she joined APU after her skiing career at Dartmouth College.APU’s Nordic Ski Center is not an intercollegiate sports program; rather, it emphasizes development, often targeting the world stage. Her life involved little more than exercise, eating and sleeping after she joined. It was not possible to do anything else she said. I was very tired.

Rosie Brennan Overcoming Doubts on Her Path to the Winter Olympics

Doubts crept in when she didn’t find much benefit in the first few seasons. She was not selected for the 2014 Olympic team and called her results disappointing at the US Championships at the time. In 2014, she told Flora that she was departing from APU to return to Utah.

Before long, she changed course once again, prompted by an epiphany she said she had while traveling to Alaska for a visit. APU provides everything I need to succeed. There’s nothing they don’t offer he reflected on the plane north. It’s entirely up to me whether I choose to put in the work or not.

Winter Olympic Milano Cortina 2026 Tickets | Winter Olympic Tickets | Winter Olympic Games Tickets | Olympic Tickets

I went down and immediately called Eric and said, I’m coming back, she said. Flora said he noticed her renewed focus and results mostly increased in the decade that followed. Recently, Brennan and Flora shared insights into what the grueling life entails and how she built a career that may have even greater things in store. Speed, intensity, volume. Repeat. Brennan attributes her ski training regimen to her collaboration and trust in Flora, she explained. The trainer’s credentials are impressive.

In his tenure as head coach of the APU Elite Team, which began in 2006, APU has become a reliable pool of talent for the US National Team.  Olympic Cross Country Skiing: Five Great Winter Olympic Cross Country Skiing Destinations to Consider

Training Regimen at APU Nordic Ski Center

Six of its skiers were named to the US Olympic team in 2022 and 10 in 2018. Currently, seven of the 18 skiers named to the US cross-country A and B teams train at the APU Nordic Ski Center under Flora. Different training days trigger different energy systems he said. Endless refinements have been made for individual athletes, but the frame is pretty consistent.

Mondays are sprint days. Typically, athletes can ski 30 to 35 kilometers in a morning session. The sprint takes place on about 10 hills, each tackled 45 seconds to a minute at a time at a tank-emptying race pace, Flora said. It’s a tough zone to be in. Too much lactate, too much burn, Flora said. It may not sound like much—10 hills. it’s too much.

A second training session occurs later that day. Tuesdays are for intensity and interval work, a gear that’s below race pace but still builds endurance. A common workout involves repeating a 10-minute course six times. Volume skiing—typically around 40 to 60 kilometers—takes place on Wednesdays at a more relaxed pace.  A variation of the early week workouts are repeated on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Year-Round Training Opportunities at APU

Typical training weeks can vary from 200 to 300 kilometers of total skiing, Flora noted, sometimes exceeding that amount, along with additional non-skiing workouts. Sundays are rarely a day off, but athletes have the freedom to choose their own adventure. This could be cycling, trail running, rowing or skating. We aim to strike a balance that adds to their life energy rather than detracts from it Flora said. We typically train for about 48-49 weeks a year, often seven days a week, he added.

On a recent Friday, the APU University Elite team bundled up in high-visibility vests for interval skiing training in a hilly South Anchorage neighborhood. After a long warm-up, Brennan and the other athletes hit the streets.

Orange posts placed on the side of the road marked the points at which they erupted into a frenzy of punches and kicks across the pavement. Flora provided an emphatic technical assessment along with generous servings of positive encouragement.

APU skiers with ambitious goals are in it for the long haul. I think if you’re going to have someone ski on top of the world, it’s not a one-year project or a two-year project. It’s more of a 10-year project said Flora.

Both Brennan and Flora agree that the ski training opportunities in Anchorage are unmatched, thanks to the long winters and extensive trail network. This is enhanced by APU’s Thomas Glacier Training Center at Eagle Glacier above Girdwood, through which skiers gain access to the snow during the summer, although it has been closed for several years for reconstruction. The team also travels to Utah for higher altitude training camps each October.

The Balance of Strength Training in winter olympic Cross-Country Skiing

It is vital to be strong. This is universally acknowledged at Brennan’s level of cross-country skiing expertise. How strong and in what way, is a more complicated recipe. When you’re traveling to the World Cup (circuit), it’s the most different thing between the athletes and the countries she said.

Brennan’s approach is that strength training should complement her skiing time, not replace it. For me, it’s not worth putting all my eggs in that basket. I definitely want to be strong and I definitely want to use him as injury prevention, but other than that there isn’t much evidence to differentiate between a second and a first Brennan.

Winter Olympic: Strategic Strength Training for Peak Performance

Brennan’s plan comes from her consultation with Tschana Schiller, director of sports science for performance and endurance for the US Ski and Snowboard Association.

Strength training sessions coincide with interval skiing days on Tuesdays and Fridays. The lifting session happens at a fast pace. Brennan said a typical visit to the weight room includes about 10 movements — squats, deadlifts, bench rows, bench presses and hip extensions usually among them.

Her best, she said, is probably deadlifts. Plyometric movements, such as jumps and jumps, are interspersed to benefit speed and coordination. All in all, it’s all done in 75 minutes or less, she said.

Winter Olympic 2026 Tickets| Winter Olympic Opening Ceremony Tickets | Olympic Cross Country Skiing Tickets

Her most intense weight training happens in the summer, she said. The aim is to build strength before it hits the road for the World Cup season, when weather and access to facilities become less predictable. The hope is that when I leave for Europe, I will be at my peak strength, because it is also difficult to maintain it throughout the winter, she said.

Ligety planned to compete in the 2021 World Championships in Cortina d’Ampezzo, but withdrew due to an injury, which forced him to retire from ski racing in early February 2021. He finished his career with 25 wins (24 in giant slalom and 1 super combined) and 52 podiums in the World Cup race. His gold medal in the giant slalom at the Winter Olympics, along with 24 GS World Cup victories, three GS World Championship gold medals, and five World Cup titles, positions him among the top three giant slalom skiers of all time, according to Ski-DB.

Early Life and winter Olympic Breakthrough

Ligety was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Cyndi Sharp and Bill Ligety, both of whom are real estate agents. He grew up in Park City and began skiing at the age of two, moving on to racing by the age of ten. Attending the Winter Sports School, Ligety graduated in 2002.

He attended the Winter Sports School and graduated in 2002. Ligety was named to the U.S. Ski Development Team and won a silver medal in slalom at the 2004 World Junior Championships. He made his World Cup debut during the 2004 season, competing in the giant slalom event in Park City.  In the summer of 2004, Ligety and US Ski Team coach Sasha Rearick studied Tai Chi at Fu Style. The following winter in the 2005 season, Ligety was added to the US Ski Team full-time, during which he had four top-15 finishes in the slalom, placing 24th overall in the discipline.

Ligety achieved his first World Cup podium in the season’s first slalom at Beaver Creek in December, followed by a second and third place in the next two races. Ligety’s first major win in his professional career came at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, held in Sestriere. Ligety won gold in the men’s combined event, a major upset as the two runners favored to win the event failed to complete the slalom leg.

Winter Olympic Triumph and World Cup Success

At age 21, he became the first American to win an Olympic gold medal in alpine skiing in a dozen years, since Tommy Moe won the downhill at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway. Ligety also became the fourth American male skier to win a Winter Olympic gold medal, joining the ranks of Moe, Phil Mahre (slalom, 1984), and Bill Johnson (downhill, 1984). In Turin, he participated in both the giant slalom and slalom but did not finish either event. After his Olympic victory in the combined, Ligety recorded his first World Cup victory, a victory in the giant slalom in Yongpyeong, South Korea.

He finished ninth overall in the World Cup standings for the year, marking the first time three Americans had placed in the top 10 (along with Bode Miller in third and Daron Rahlves in fourth), despite the fact that he did not competed in downhill or super-G that year. – It came as a bit of a surprise that Ted Ligety’s first win was in giant slalom, as he wasn’t typically regarded as a strong competitor in that discipline.

Early Competitions and winter Olympic Expectations

Goggia Aims for December Return Amidst Injury Struggles

If everything goes well, I would like to be back racing in mid-December at Beaver Creek Goggia, 31, said at the Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI) media day in Milan. Goggia is a four-time winner of the overall downhill World Cup title and has won downhill gold at the 2018 PyeongChang winter Olympic and silver at the 2022 Beijing Games.

However, her career has been plagued by a succession of injuries. Emotionally, this time was very difficult, but I made every effort to recover. It would be intellectually dishonest to talk about goals now without even touching the snow she said.

Goggia added that she had no expectations for the season, especially with the Winter Olympics approaching, but just wanted progress, without any rush. I want to ski and give it my all; my drive to push myself remains strong despite seven injuries she said. Reporting by Elvira Pollina Writing by Keith Weir Editing by Christian Rindge.

She took full advantage of the opportunity, securing two top-ten finishes: fourth in the super-G and seventh in the super combined. Goggia marked her first World Cup podium in November 2016, earning third place in the giant slalom in Killington. She won bronze in the same event at the World Championships in February. She followed that up with a super-G win the next day for her eleventh World Cup podium of the season. It was the fourth time she won multiple podiums at the same race venue and added a fifth with two podiums at the World Cup Finals in Aspen. She concluded the season with 1,197 World Cup points, achieving 13 podium finishes across four different disciplines, and secured third place overall.

In 2018, she won back-to-back World Cup downhills in mid-January in Bad Kleinkirchheim and Cortina d’Ampezzo. She clinched the downhill gold medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea, and also secured the downhill World Cup season title, narrowly surpassing Lindsey Vonn by three points. The season’s sporting achievements earned her a nomination for the Laureus World Sports Breakthrough of the Year Award.

Resilience and Continued Success in Alpine Skiing

A broken ankle in October 2018 sidelined Goggia for most of the World Cup season. However, she made a comeback in late January 2019, finishing as the runner-up in her first two starts at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. She won her first race of the season since returning from injury in the women’s downhill in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, in February.

At the World Championships in Are, Goggia won silver in the Super-G, 0.02 seconds behind gold medalist Mikaela Shiffrin.

In June 2019, the Italian Olympic Committee appointed Goggia as an ambassador for the country’s bid to host the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina. During the 2020 season, Goggia secured two Super-G podiums, clinching victory in St. Moritz and finishing second in Sochi, both alongside teammate Federica Brignone. Unfortunately, her season came to an abrupt end in early February when she fell during the super-G race in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, resulting in a fractured left arm.

A Comeback and Continued Dominance in Downhill Skiing

In December 2020, Goggia took her first World Cup downhill victory in almost two years on the Oreiller-Killy slope in Val d’Isère, France, a day after a runner-up finish on the same hill in the first downhill race of the season. . She continued her podium-topping year in the discipline in January 2021 with a first-place finish at St. Anton, Austria and back-to-back wins on the Mont Lachaux course in Crans-Montana. Having won four consecutive downhill races, Goggia became the first woman to achieve the feat since Vonn in 2018.

On January 31, while skiing in the valley after the canceled super-G in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Goggia fell into the snow wet, breaking a bone in her right knee. The injury forced him to miss the World Indoor Championships in Cortina – starting just a week after the crash – and two downhill World Cup races. She returned to training in early March, planning to defend her downhill lead at the final event of the season in Lenzerheide, Switzerland. On 17 March, Goggia became the downhill World Cup champion for the second time in his career, after heavy snowfall forced the cancellation of the race.

Triumph and Resilience at the 2022 Winter Olympic

In early December 2021, Goggia won all three races at Lake Louise for her first career hat-trick, joining Vonn (2011, 2012, 2015) and Katja Seizinger (1997) as the only women to do so. who won the descents and super-G. in classic Canadian settings. In October 2021, Goggia was appointed as Italy’s flag bearer for the opening ceremony of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China. On 23 January 2022, Goggia suffered a knee injury following a crash at the Cortina d’Ampezzo Super-G.

She immediately began physical rehabilitation with the goal of returning in time to defend her Olympic downhill title in mid-February.  Goggia traveled to Beijing with the intention of participating in the downhill, but withdrew from her flag-carrying duties at the opening ceremony on 4 February. On February 15, despite all the obstacles, she won the silver medal in the downhill – her second consecutive Olympic medal in that event.

Continued Dominance and Challenges in the 2022-2023 Season

After the winter Olympic, Goggia did not have much success in the remaining World Cup events, but nevertheless won the downhill cup once again with her strong early season results (4 wins and a third place).  In the 2022–2023 season, Goggia clinched victory in five out of the nine downhill races, while also securing three second-place finishes on the podium. At the World Cup finals in Soldeu, Andorra, she captured her fourth crystal globe in this discipline, marking her third consecutive win.
