It’s quite a challenge to coach the Canadian team with the talent we have Gagnon said. We can only send three skaters per distance for the Winter Olympics, which means we can no longer give everyone as much experience.

It’s what motivates the Prince George Blizzard Speed Skating Club alumna to push harder in training and fuels her desire to compete and excel at the highest level as a long track speed skater.

The thrill of holding the Canadian flag, listening to the song and running alongside teammates Ivanie Blondin and Brooklyn McDougall, who were standing high on the podium at the International Skating Union speed skating world championships brought tears to Hiller’s eyes when he first passed a year ago in the Netherlands.

Those same emotions out again in February. Blondin and Maddison Perman teamed defend the title the Olympic Oval in Calgary.

 It’s been an incredible feeling from being national champions and being world champions. Being on our home track in Calgary with our friends and family there was surreal. It goes to show that everything I put into the game is now paying off and that really motivates me for the next couple of years.

 He’s big on technique and in Olympic speed skating it’s really all about technique you have to get that down to be able to skate fast and put pressure down on the ice so at first we went back to basics and really nailed technique anew. I was always a hard worker and always but 110 per cent to my training fitness wise but technique is something that held me back in the past.

who turned 27 on May 7 graduated with a degree in kinesiology. Hiller went to the Prince George Blizzard club’s annual convention a few weekends ago and met some new skaters on his trip home. He was stomping around not bringing world championship medals as an example to show the kids what can happen if you stick with it long enough.

It was great meeting the kids and telling them I used to be just like them. I had four years of skating, I know what it’s like I can just show them that anything is possible they can achieve whatever they want in the sport.

He and his twin brother Nico started skating at the age of four along with his six-year-old brother Lucas. Their mother, Ariadne de Holness Hiller a native of Panama, was working as a geologist in Peru when she saw TV coverage of short-track skating at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary.

Years later when she moved to Prince George with her husband Bruce she remembered the clip and signed all three kids up as Blizzard skaters. Fast skating was the perfect outing for Nico a hyperactive kid who needed an outlet for all that energy and the other two Hillers were hooked from the start.

Skating has been our biggest annual event since I was four years old and we never took a break Caroline said. I did sports in high school at College Heights High School and loved track and field and did cross country basketball volleyball and basketball but I kept coming back to speed skating. I was pretty good when I was younger, and that probably helped when I was younger.

It was just so much fun and we got older in the summer we did cross training, cycling and weight training in X-Conditioning and I loved working hard and pushing myself and setting goals and getting them.

Hiller spent four years on the NextGen national team and lost her spot in 2022-23 and re-qualified for the national team this past season. In early 2023 he invited back and given a card because his times were fast.

This past season’s World Cup tour took him for another lap around the world. From Calgary he went to Japan then hit China the Netherlands, Norway and Poland returning to Calgary. He is ranked 13th in the world in the 500m. He finished ninth in that race in China with only a handful of top-15 finishes.

It goes to show how important a good coach is, Kevin Crockett was able to see what I needed and what we needed to work together he said. In the past the coaches haven’t been able to do that I’ve mostly just pushed aside and this time we were able to come back strong and the national team that I really belong there.

Their coach-athlete chemistry produced immediate results and before he knew it Hiller was winning the sprints from every member of the national team.

he said It’s been a long road and the road hasn’t been straight .There’s always been ups and downs and struggles but I can always come back and then I look back on it all and it’s worth it to get where I did.
