Alpine Ski Racing Winter Olympic superstar Alice Robinson has been crowned the overall NZ 2024 Snow Sports Athlete of the Year at the organization’s annual awards. The 22-year-old from Queenstown enjoyed an outstanding 2023/24 season, securing five podium finishes in World Cup giant slalom and achieving five more top-10 finishes in both giant slalom and Super G events. Robinson is the 2024 New Zealand national giant slalom champion and triumphed at the NZ FIS ANC Giant Slalom Winter Games earlier this season, both events taking place at Coronet Peak. The awards night was held on Saturday, where she also received the title of Alpine Athlete of the Year.

Freerider Ben Richards is the 2024 Freeride Athlete of the Year, after an outstanding rookie season on the Freeride World Tour, winning the Fieberbrunn Pro stop, placing third overall in the 2024 Freeride World Tour and earning the title of World Tour Freeride Rookie of the Year.

Winter Olympic Sports Highlights

Free ski Athlete of the Year Nico Porteous finished second at the 2024 Aspen X Games, setting a unique streak the likes of which has never been seen before, combining the most technical tricks in the game with his style and creativity of known Zoi Sadowski-Synnott was once again awarded Snowboard of the Year for her gold medal performance at the Edmonton FIS Snowboard Big Air Cup. The Athlete of the Year run was hotly contested, with Lake Hāwea’s Luke Harrold taking the trophy home. He secured second place in his FIS Free Ski Halfpipe World Cup debut and also returned with a gold and a bronze medal from the Gang won 2024 Winter Olympic Youth Games. This year’s Coach of the Year Award was jointly award to coaches Alice Robinson, Nils Coberger and Tim Cafe.

Coaching Excellence and Recognition

They undertook the planning, coaching and support of Alice’s World Cup campaign during the 2023/24 season said the awards organizers. Alice had an outstanding season, which is due not only to Alice’s exceptional talent, but also to the equally important experience, professionalism, support and sound development coaching brought to the growing team by Nils and Tim.

Frank Wylie of Coronet Peak was award Instructor of the Year, recognizing his 30 years of commitment to teaching snow sports. Kerry Trevalla-Hall and Geoff Hunt were name Masters of the Year, finishing the season as the top female and male ski racers, respectively. The annual Snow Sports NZ Awards presented by Sidekick is a fantastic event to celebrate the year it’s been and a great way to send off Kiwi athletes as they head to the Northern Hemisphere.

Alice Robinson a Rising Star in Alpine Skiing

Teenage sensation Alice Robinson set for big things in alpine skiing this season. The 17-year-old has already been to one winter Olympics, representing New Zealand at PyeongChang 2018, but last season saw her make stunning progress. Just a month after winning giant slalom gold at the World Junior Championships, Robinson finished second to Mikaela Shiffrin in the final World Cup slalom of the season in Soldeu, Andorra.

This will be her second full World Cup campaign and, with no World Championships or Olympic Games to build on, the teenager has the chance to add to her experience and perhaps claim a first win in the senior ranks. The winter Olympic Channel caught up with Robinson ahead of the season-opening giant slalom in Soelden, Austria.

Mikaela Shiffrin Concludes Challenging Season

Alpine skiing star Mikaela Shiffrin has wrapped up the most challenging season of her career with an impressive 106th World Cup podium finish. The American placed second in the giant slalom at the finals in Lenzerheide, behind Alice Robinson, who secured her first win of the season.

The 19-year-old Kiwi was fourth after the first run but made a strong push in the second, overtaking first-round leader Shiffrin by 0.28 seconds. Slovenia’s Meta Hrovat finished third, 0.48 seconds behind Robinson.

With her 106th top-three finish in 192 starts, Shiffrin has reached the podium in 55% of her World Cup races. Petra Vlhova, the overall winner of the 2021 World Cup, looked fatigued in 11th place, while Super G globe winner Lara Gut-Behrami opted to end her first run early.

Shiffrin Reflects on a Challenging Season

Marta Bassino, who had already clinched the GS globe, finished 7th in the season’s final race. “A lot of things went completely differently this season, and I had a lot of personal uncertainty,” Shiffrin remarked after the season finale slalom on Saturday.

While the season has quite successful, it was relatively less so compared to others. Shiffrin’s previous season ended on a different note, as she faced the tragic death of her father, Jeff, in early February 2020, followed by a global pandemic that kept her off the slopes for several months.

Shiffrin Looks Ahead to Winter Olympic

The combination of personal tragedies and COVID restrictions affected her summer training and testing of new equipment.  This season, after missing her Soelden debut due to a back injury, Shiffrin made her long-awaited comeback in Levi, Finland, where she finished second. In December, she returned to winning form in Courchevel, France, followed by slalom victories in Flachau in January and Jasna this month. Her performance at the 2021 Cortina World Championships was particularly notable, where she won four medals, including a gold in the combined event, marking her sixth title overall. As the season comes to a close, Shiffrin is already looking ahead to next season and the Winter Olympics in Beijing, indicating that she may adjust her schedule to prioritize her fitness and health.

The two-time Winter Olympic gold medalist, who claimed victory in the combined event at the 2006 Turin Games and in the Giant Slalom at the 2014 Sochi Games, is joining the team as an athlete ambassador and new chief product performance officer. Ted Ligety A Legacy in Alpine Skiing

Theodore Sharp Ligety (born August 31, 1984) is a retired American alpine ski racer, two-time winter Olympic gold medalist, and entrepreneur who co-founded Shred Optics. Ligety won the combined event at the 2006 winter Olympic in Turin and the giant slalom event at the 2014 winter Olympic in Sochi. He is also a five-time World Cup champion in giant slalom, having won titles in 2008, 2010, 2011, 2013, and 2014. Ligety secured gold in the giant slalom at the 2011 World Championships. He successfully defended his world giant slalom title in 2013 in Schladming, Austria, where he also won a surprise super-G gold and a third golden in the supercombination.

Ligety planned to compete in the 2021 World Championships in Cortina d’Ampezzo, but withdrew due to an injury, which forced him to retire from ski racing in early February 2021. He finished his career with 25 wins (24 in giant slalom and 1 super combined) and 52 podiums in the World Cup race. His gold medal in the giant slalom at the Winter Olympics, along with 24 GS World Cup victories, three GS World Championship gold medals, and five World Cup titles, positions him among the top three giant slalom skiers of all time, according to Ski-DB.

Early Life and winter Olympic Breakthrough

Ligety was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Cyndi Sharp and Bill Ligety, both of whom are real estate agents. He grew up in Park City and began skiing at the age of two, moving on to racing by the age of ten. Attending the Winter Sports School, Ligety graduated in 2002.

He attended the Winter Sports School and graduated in 2002. Ligety was named to the U.S. Ski Development Team and won a silver medal in slalom at the 2004 World Junior Championships. He made his World Cup debut during the 2004 season, competing in the giant slalom event in Park City.  In the summer of 2004, Ligety and US Ski Team coach Sasha Rearick studied Tai Chi at Fu Style. The following winter in the 2005 season, Ligety was added to the US Ski Team full-time, during which he had four top-15 finishes in the slalom, placing 24th overall in the discipline.

Ligety achieved his first World Cup podium in the season’s first slalom at Beaver Creek in December, followed by a second and third place in the next two races. Ligety’s first major win in his professional career came at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, held in Sestriere. Ligety won gold in the men’s combined event, a major upset as the two runners favored to win the event failed to complete the slalom leg.

Winter Olympic Triumph and World Cup Success

At age 21, he became the first American to win an Olympic gold medal in alpine skiing in a dozen years, since Tommy Moe won the downhill at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway. Ligety also became the fourth American male skier to win a Winter Olympic gold medal, joining the ranks of Moe, Phil Mahre (slalom, 1984), and Bill Johnson (downhill, 1984). In Turin, he participated in both the giant slalom and slalom but did not finish either event. After his Olympic victory in the combined, Ligety recorded his first World Cup victory, a victory in the giant slalom in Yongpyeong, South Korea.

He finished ninth overall in the World Cup standings for the year, marking the first time three Americans had placed in the top 10 (along with Bode Miller in third and Daron Rahlves in fourth), despite the fact that he did not competed in downhill or super-G that year. – It came as a bit of a surprise that Ted Ligety’s first win was in giant slalom, as he wasn’t typically regarded as a strong competitor in that discipline.

Ligety made history by becoming the first American cross-country skier to win two Olympic gold medals in his career. Following the Olympics, he secured the giant slalom title in Kranjska Gora for a record sixth time. At the season finale in Lenzerheide, he unexpectedly finished second in the downhill race, tying with Christof Innerhofer. The result was his first ever downhill podium and made him only the second American skier in history, behind Bode Miller, to podium in all five alpine skiing disciplines.Ligety finished fifth in the final super-G race. Before the final giant slalom race of the season, Ligety trailed Marcel Hirscher by 50 points for the discipline title.

However, Ligety won the event on March 15 by 0.03 seconds over Alexis Pinturault, and with Hirscher finishing fourth, the two skiers ended the season tied on 560 points. However, the Crystal Globe was award to Ligety, who won due to five discipline wins during the season compared to Hirscher’s two. This was Ligety’s fifth career giant slalom title. Hirscher lost the title in that final giant slalom race with a deficit of 0.01 seconds to 3rd place (accomplished by Felix Neureuther) giving him 60 points, 10 points more than 4th place.

MILAN, Oct 11 (Reuters) – Italian Winter Olympic ski champion Sofia Goggia will miss the opening events of the World Cup season but hopes to be back in action before Christmas after an injury, she said on Friday. Goggia broke the tibia in her right leg when she crashed in training for the giant slalom in February, ending her season at a time when she was leading the downhill World Cup standings.

Goggia Aims for December Return Amidst Injury Struggles

If everything goes well, I would like to be back racing in mid-December at Beaver Creek Goggia, 31, said at the Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI) media day in Milan. Goggia is a four-time winner of the overall downhill World Cup title and has won downhill gold at the 2018 PyeongChang winter Olympic and silver at the 2022 Beijing Games.

However, her career has been plagued by a succession of injuries. Emotionally, this time was very difficult, but I made every effort to recover. It would be intellectually dishonest to talk about goals now without even touching the snow she said.

Goggia added that she had no expectations for the season, especially with the Winter Olympics approaching, but just wanted progress, without any rush. Early Success and Breakthrough at the Winter Olympic

Having only four career giant slalom starts and no finishes in her World Cup history, Goggia was selected for the Italian women’s team at the 2013 World Championships in Schladming, Austria. She took full advantage of the opportunity, securing two top-ten finishes: fourth in the super-G and seventh in the super combined. Goggia marked her first World Cup podium in November 2016, earning third place in the giant slalom in Killington. She won bronze in the same event at the World Championships in February. Goggia’s first World Cup win came down in March 2017 in Jeongseon, South Korea.

She followed that up with a super-G win the next day for her eleventh World Cup podium of the season. It was the fourth time she won multiple podiums at the same race venue and added a fifth with two podiums at the World Cup Finals in Aspen.She concluded the season with 1,197 World Cup points, achieving 13 podium finishes across four different disciplines, and secured third place overall.

In 2018, she won back-to-back World Cup downhills in mid-January in Bad Kleinkirchheim and Cortina d’Ampezzo. She clinched the downhill gold medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea, and also secured the downhill World Cup season title, narrowly surpassing Lindsey Vonn by three points.The season’s sporting achievements earned her a nomination for the Laureus World Sports Breakthrough of the Year Award.

Resilience and Continued Success in Alpine Skiing

A broken ankle in October 2018 sidelined Goggia for most of the World Cup season. However, she made a comeback in late January 2019, finishing as the runner-up in her first two starts at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. She won her first race of the season since returning from injury in the women’s downhill in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, in February.

At the World Championships in Are, Goggia won silver in the Super-G, 0.02 seconds behind gold medalist Mikaela Shiffrin.

In June 2019, the Italian Olympic Committee appointed Goggia as an ambassador for the country’s bid to host the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina. On June 24, she was part of the Italian delegation at the IOC headquarters in Lausanne, where Milan-Cortina was chosen as the host, defeating Stockholm-Åre.

During the 2020 season, Goggia secured two Super-G podiums, clinching victory in St. Moritz and finishing second in Sochi, both alongside teammate Federica Brignone. Unfortunately, her season came to an abrupt end in early February when she fell during the super-G race in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, resulting in a fractured left arm.

A Comeback and Continued Dominance in Downhill Skiing

In December 2020, Goggia took her first World Cup downhill victory in almost two years on the Oreiller-Killy slope in Val d’Isère, France, a day after a runner-up finish on the same hill in the first downhill race of the season. . She continued her podium-topping year in the discipline in January 2021 with a first-place finish at St. Anton, Austria and back-to-back wins on the Mont Lachaux course in Crans-Montana. Having won four consecutive downhill races, Goggia became the first woman to achieve the feat since Vonn in 2018.

 On January 31, while skiing in the valley after the canceled super-G in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Goggia fell into the snow wet, breaking a bone in her right knee. The injury forced him to miss the World Indoor Championships in Cortina – starting just a week after the crash – and two downhill World Cup races. She returned to training in early March, planning to defend her downhill lead at the final event of the season in Lenzerheide, Switzerland. On 17 March, Goggia became the downhill World Cup champion for the second time in his career, after heavy snowfall forced the cancellation of the race.

Triumph and Resilience at the 2022 Winter Olympic

In early December 2021, Goggia won all three races at Lake Louise for her first career hat-trick, joining Vonn (2011, 2012, 2015) and Katja Seizinger (1997) as the only women to do so. who won the descents and super-G. in classic Canadian settings.In October 2021, Goggia was appointed as Italy’s flag bearer for the opening ceremony of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China. On 23 January 2022, Goggia suffered a knee injury following a crash at the Cortina d’Ampezzo Super-G.

She immediately began physical rehabilitation with the goal of returning in time to defend her Olympic downhill title in mid-February.  Goggia traveled to Beijing with the intention of participating in the downhill, but withdrew from her flag-carrying duties at the opening ceremony on 4 February. On February 15, despite all the obstacles, she won the silver medal in the downhill – her second consecutive Olympic medal in that event.

Continued Dominance and Challenges in the 2022-2023 Season

After the winter Olympic, Goggia did not have much success in the remaining World Cup events, but nevertheless won the downhill cup once again with her strong early season results (4 wins and a third place).  In the 2022–2023 season, Goggia clinched victory in five out of the nine downhill races, while also securing three second-place finishes on the podium. At the World Cup finals in Soldeu, Andorra, she captured her fourth crystal globe in this discipline, marking her third consecutive win.

At the 2023 World Championships in Meribel, France, Goggia was a strong favorite for the downhill race, however, she was disqualified due to a gate.
