Last month, he made a brief return for a one-off T20I against Namibia, having also reversed his ODI retirement earlier in the year. Still, his place in the T20 squad is far from guaranteed. Now on a hybrid central contract, the veteran left-hander has the flexibility to choose which international matches he plays. However, he has only featured in four of South Africa’s 25 T20Is since the last World Cup and missed the Pakistan series due to a hamstring injury. If he’s fit, he’s likely to walk straight back into the team, but his lack of game time remains a concern.
In short, South Africa has at least three batting spots up for grabs, and they’ll also need backup options in case Miller’s availability becomes an issue again. The logical place to start reworking the lineup is at the top. Since the 2024 World Cup, South Africa has tried six different opening combinations.
Hendricks and Ryan Rickelton are the most frequent, appearing together in nine matches. Conrad has already made his preferences clear. It’s no secret that Aiden [Markram] and Ryan [Rickelton] are my preferred opening batters, he said.
