Rugby World Cup 2027: South Africa’s national rugby team, the Springboks, is beginning their new season with their immediate focus firmly set on their opening two fixtures: a match against the Barbarians, followed by a Test against England. While these games are currently the priority, plans for the rest of the season are still taking shape.

As part of preparations, head coach Rassie Erasmus has called up 49 players to attend the Springboks’ first alignment camp of the year, which is being held in Cape Town. The camp is designed to bring the squad together, introduce new players to the team environment, and ensure experienced players are fully prepared for the demanding campaign ahead.
This season will be a busy one for South Africa. The Springboks are scheduled to play 13 official Test matches, along with an additional international match against the Barbarians. The campaign is also part of the team’s longer-term planning as they continue to build toward the Rugby World Cup 2027.
Among the 49 players invited to the alignment camp, 11 have not yet earned a Test cap for the Springboks. However, Erasmus made it clear that being invited to the camp does not automatically mean those players will make their international debuts this year.

Rugby World Cup: Springboks Prepare for Tough Opening Tests
Instead, the goal is to gradually build depth within the squad. And ensure more players gain experience at the international level before the next World Cup cycle reaches its peak. Speaking at a media briefing on Monday, Erasmus explained that much of the season remains uncertain at this stage.

We are not 100 percent sure how things will pan out this year, he said. Right now, we know who we are playing in our first two games, and that’s where our focus is. Both matches will present serious challenges.
Erasmus noted that facing England is always a demanding task, given their structured style of play and physical approach. However, he also emphasized that the Barbarians, despite being an invitational side, should never be underestimated.
You generally know what to expect when you play England, although that doesn’t make it any easier, Erasmus said. It will be a tough match. But the Barbarians are also very competitive on the day. He added that there is extra intrigue surrounding the Barbarians’ match because of the coaching staff involved.
Scott Razor Robertson and Felipe Contepomi are part of the Barbarians’ coaching setup, which adds another layer of interest to the contest. There’s definitely a bit of spice with Razor and Felipe involved, Erasmus said.

Rugby World Cup Final: Erasmus Plans Flexible Squad Strategy
We’ll see how we start our season in that Barbarians game and then see how things unfold when we take on England. Erasmus also explained that squad selection throughout the season will depend heavily on results and momentum.
If the Springboks perform well and continue winning, the coaching staff will likely maintain consistency in selection. However, if results go against them, changes could be made to give other players opportunities.

We always say that if the team keeps winning, those are the players who will likely play the following week, he said. But if things don’t go well and we lose momentum, then you can adjust. Because of that uncertainty, Erasmus said it is difficult to predict how many players will feature for the Springboks this season.
I can’t say whether we will use 51 players this year, he said. It might be 57, or it could even be as few as 33. It really depends on how the season develops week by week. One of the Springboks’ biggest early challenges will be the Nations Championship Tests scheduled for July.
However, another major goal for the team this year is winning the newly introduced Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series against New Zealand. South Africa will face their long-time rivals, the All Blacks, in four Tests later in the year.
