Ireland and Scotland have played each other 143 times, with Ireland winning 72 of those meetings. The numbers tell the story. Scotland haven’t beaten Ireland in their last 11 attempts. A streak that has grown increasingly frustrating for the squad and coaching staff.
Townsend knows that if Scotland wants to progress at the next World Cup, the cycle has to change before the tournament arrives. His side will get two chances to do so before 2027, one match in Dublin and one at Murrayfield, and he’s urging his players to seize those opportunities.
We’ll respect all three teams we have to face, but obviously Ireland is a team that has beaten us pretty regularly these last few years, Townsend said. We’ll have to be better to beat them. We have two occasions, one in Dublin, one at Murrayfield, before the World Cup.

Rugby World Cup: Scotland’s World Cup Return Set for BBC
The goal is always to beat Ireland and the other teams in the Six Nations, but it’s even more important now. It will be more difficult in the World Cup if we don’t manage to beat Ireland in the next two meetings. Off the pitch, preparations are also ramping up for a different major event: the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup.
The BBC has confirmed it will broadcast Scotland’s first men’s World Cup match since 1998. When they face Haiti on 14 June, as well as their final group game against Brazil. England fans will also be well looked after, with the BBC showing England’s second group match against Ghana on 23 June.
Plus, their knockout matches in the last 32, last 16, and semi-final, if they make it that far. Other fixtures involving the Home Nations will be shared across the UK’s free-to-air broadcasters. ITV will air England’s remaining Group L matches against Croatia and Panama, along with Scotland’s group-stage meeting with Morocco.
The BBC will also carry the opening group match for either Wales or Northern Ireland should one of them qualify through March’s four-team play-off route. If the Republic of Ireland comes through their play-off path, the BBC has committed to showing two of their group fixtures as well.
