They had a phenomenal team in the 70s, and we didn’t quite match up afterward. I believe the Welsh fans anticipated triumph, and we provided some, though not as much.

The 70s team was idolized throughout the nation, and also as the Lions. It was enjoyable but challenging to follow in their footsteps. We were fortunate at Swansea; we had several victorious seasons while I was part of the team. A couple of remaining captains like Geoff Wheel and Dai Richards. I reflect fondly on the team spirit and the moments we shared. We beat some strong opponents.

WRWC Tickets: Memories of a Golden Rugby Era

But then traveled to Scotland as underdogs and managed to flip it around and win 19-15. I may sound like an old timer, but we played during a golden age for rugby. It was still amateur, it was still enjoyable, you had your daytime career.

And trained in the evening. The day job went well too, after I left rugby, we launched an IT and telecom firm and ran it for three decades. You build friendships there, and if you can count on them on the rugby field. You can rely on them in business, too. I worked with many pals on various parts of the business, and it was all very rewarding.

That business knowledge has proven useful as Royal Porthcawl prepares to be in the spotlight of the golfing world. A chance to demonstrate it’s a truly modern and professional organization within classic settings. We sold the company three years ago, so now I’m comfortably retired. But to be fair, being Captain of Porthcawl is nearly a full-time role. So I’m quite lucky to have the time to give it what it needs, said Wyatt.

It’s been especially hectic this year, of course. We have meetings each month with the R&A regarding the AIG Women’s Open, and these discussions have been happening for the past two years. The R&A are meticulous, taking care of every detail, crossing all t’s and dotting all i’s. It’s astonishing how much planning is involved and the minor adjustments that improve everything.
