Believe it or not, it’s been 18 long years since an American women’s figure Skating stood on the Olympic podium. The last was Sasha Cohen, at the 2006 Turin Winter Olympic, where she won the silver medal. Given America’s previous dominance in women’s figure skating — Peggy Fleming, Dorothy Hamill, Kristi Yamaguchi, Tara Lipinski, Sarah Hughes, Nancy Kerrigan and Michelle Kwan, to name a few — the omission is hard to fathom.

Cohen will turn 40 this month. A graduate of Columbia University with a degree in general studies and now working for a major investment house while raising two young children—Dash and Paloma—She leads a lifestyle that is quite different from the intense athletic regimen she followed two decades ago. We thought it would be interesting to catch up with her to get some perspective on her current life and the US Women’s Figure Skating program in general.
The Shift in Figure Skating Cohen on Judging and Technical Demands
Jim Clash You’re the last U.S. women’s figure skater to stand on the winter Olympic podium—back in 2006. That’s incredible. Sasha Cohen It’s definitely surprising. Training programs evolve, and different countries often dominate at various times. The USA still has incredible talent, excelling in men’s dance and figure skating, but, as you say, we haven’t been able to put a woman on the podium since 2006. It’s disheartening as a former athlete and someone with roots in the USA.
Cohen: You’re not wrong. The sport has certainly shifted to favor higher technical difficulty and specific movements, particularly quadruple jumps. Because of this, skaters do not have time to develop their choreography in a way that highlights their personality and artistry. They have to accumulate all kinds of technical things from the beginning to the end of their programs, because this is what is reflected in the results, which ultimately determines whether they are on the podium.
The Art of Performance Cohen on Balancing Fame and Emotional Connection
At the top of the US, the whole package was considered and women had a chance to develop into mature skaters. It wasn’t just about the jumps, it was the skill on the ice that made him so fun and dynamic to watch. The Crash: When you were competing, how did you manage the attention that comes with fame—autographs, photos, and interviews—while staying focused on the business of skating?
Cohen: It’s helpful to have a coach or team manager who can be the one to say No more autographs, let him focus. Then you don’t have to be the bad guy [laughs]. But it’s hard because you see these people who have followed your career and finally have this opportunity to get an autograph or a photo.
When you’re on tour, the stakes are much lower and it’s really nice to have that one-on-one moment with someone who’s watched you since you were a kid. What we do isn’t done in isolation. It’s not just a race, it’s a performance in music with an emotional component. So it means a lot more to the audience and the fans. It is a very dynamic experience.

A Memorable Encounter: Cohen’s Moment with President Bush at the 2002 winter Olympic
Crash Revisiting the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympic. Didn’t President George W. Bush sit next to you during the opening ceremonies?
Cohen After the ceremonial lap, all the different countries began to take their respective seats on the benches to watch the opening ceremonies. Within two minutes of sitting down, two Secret Service agents came, put down this blanket and started telling people to run. We’re all like, what’s going on? They said the President would sit there. I called my mom and said, Mom, Mom, President Bush is going to sit next to me She laughed and said oh honey, I’m sure you’re wrong. I don’t think so.
Fifteen minutes later, when the President sat down next to me, I asked him Can you talk to my mom, will you say hello? She doesn’t believe you would sit next to me. He said sure and actually talked to him for a minute, a minute and a half, saying how much he loved opening ceremonies and how nice it was to talk to me. My mom told me later that she almost fell out of her chair watching from a restaurant bar in Salt Lake City. That was definitely a fun moment in those games.
Finding Balance Cohen on Motherhood and Managing Responsibilities
Crash You’re a mother yourself now. How do you balance that with your work and doing things like this interview?
Cohen You have to do things quickly [laughs]. I go to yoga, and it helps me to refocus, to have some calm, because it’s so hectic the rest of the time. One thing that is really hard is to meet all the requirements but not be able to do anything at all well. There’s a saying I once read about motherhood: You can be great at your job, great with the kids, great at this and that, but not all at the same time. It’s challenging, but it’s comforting to know that many other women share the same experience. Being a mother and participating in the world is a privilege—a balance of give and take.
But as my children are getting older, I am realizing how quickly time flies. It’s increasingly important for me to be present to influence them, play with them, and learn from them. You show up every day and try to be as present as possible, listening to that inner compass that tells you what’s really important.

With a chance to win nationals for the first time, he stumbled in his free skate on Friday and left the ice certain to lose. Isa beau Leviton, the American champion who needed only a clean sweep to win for the second straight time but fell on three jumps and dropped to third place, but let Glenn win the gold?
Could it be 15-year-old Josephine Lee who moved to second place when Leviton fell or maybe it’s Sarah Eberhard, the fourth Pewter Medal winner from Haymarket, Va., who trains with Ilia Melanin, the American star who looks set to compete for winter Olympic gold in two years.
Who Will Lead Team USA to Medals
When Friday night rolled around Saturday morning, the answer wasn’t clear as the foursome sat in pinstripes behind a map below Nationwide Arena and tried to sort out the pain of wearing it. Pins are not sure what to say.
It’s a mixture of being very grateful for this result, but also knowing that I can do better Glenn said. I don’t know how it feels Lee said, expressing her relief at successfully putting together two programs after a tough start at last year’s nationals.
Mikaela Shiffrin was injured after crashing during the World Cup tournament in Italy. I’m really disappointed with my skiing today Leviton said before adding experience always teaches. It was a strange night in a strange time for women’s skiing in the United States. American women used to win medals at the winter Olympic but haven’t done so since Sasha Cohen took silver in 2006.
With the Russians abroad the world image is a punishment for the war in Ukraine, there is no guarantee that there will be a Russian army. Milan, allowing an opportunity for American athletes. But Friday offered little evidence that the United States is ready to seize that opportunity, or any opportunity.
Leviton appeared to be on a strong streak after his country won last year and won two Grand Prix last fall, but a dangerous short program in the Grand Prix final preceded his trouble on Friday night. He said his free ride here was like a fever dream because he was concerned and anxious about protecting his title. His first fall woke him up. I thought, what am I doing? he said.
American Figure Skating Confront Trials on the Road to Winter Olympic – Milano Cortina 2026
He didn’t know how he fell the next two times, but he just fell on the ice after that and lost his shot at another gold. He appeared to be crying as he slid off the ice and stared sadly at the camera as he waited for his shot, frowning as he made a heart with his hands. it did not appear when his score was announced, dropping his head as if he was certain that he would finish in third place.
Lance Larson, swimmer who lost Olympic gold in historic controversy, dies at 83. Meanwhile, Glenn, a 24-year-old who endured years of disappointment and near misses in a promising career, thinks he’s squandered his best chance at an American championship. The night before he walked through a short speed program and jumped with a fire that he later admitted he had to try to put out just by focusing on the ski at hand.
Navigating Challenges on the Road to Winter Olympic – Milano Cortina 2026
But halfway through Friday’s freestyle, he lost his momentum. He made two mistakes on two jumps and after that, forced a smile as he skated off the ice.”Definitely,” was how he described the minutes he went from a terrible chance to an uncertain victory.
Finally, almost half an hour after what could have been a terrible night, he beamed as fans reached out to touch his hand. Someone gave him a Pride flag and he wore it. She started crying again.
For a while, worries about another Olympics can wait. Glenn began to skate in circles around the empty arena, the Pride flag on his shoulders, a gold medal around his neck and the knowledge that he had finally become America’s champion in a way that no one has ever imagined.
Josephine Lee Makes Waves as a Fresh Talent in Figure Skating
Josephine Lee’s skating talent is clear even to the most casual observer. His confident jumps, ability to captivate the audience, and the beauty of his edges—technique that embodies the artistry of skating—make him a compelling performer.
Lee, who turned 16 on Feb. 3, cemented her winter Olympic 2026 ambitions by performing the highest-scoring long program at the recent U.S. championships. It’s an amazing habit that raised her to an unexpected position but she should have been in second place behind Amber Glenn and ahead of her. defending champion Isa beau Leviton.
But Lee, who lives in Irvine and trains at Lakewood Ice, has another less obvious talent: He can solve a Rubik’s cube with his feet. He played a video of his feet for the Times but was too modest to share. Suffice it to say that if finishing the Rubik’s cube at your feet became a winter Olympic sport, he would be in contention for a gold medal.
He solved it with his hands, but he didn’t stop there. One time I was driving for a long time and I was really bored, so I decided to put the Rubik’s cube on the floor. For about an hour he said. It’s good ankle exercise. It’s not a traditional teaching method, but it’s working for him.
Lee is too young to compete at the senior level in this year’s World Championships, but she will participate in the Junior World Championships later this month in Taiwan, aiming to better her 19th-place finish from last year. He is trying to stay current while positioning himself to earn a spot on the US team at the Winter Olympic – Milano Cortina 2026 Games, a difficult balance to maintain.
Josephine Lee: A Promising Talent on the Road to Winter Olympic – Milano Cortina 2026
He has talent and character. He was 4 years old when his father, Jeff, a computer programmer, took him to a playground near his office. it was, he joked, the only person who failed a Tot 1 learn-to-skate class. However, he knew the challenges and emotions that achieving the game offered.
That determination carried him through a broken back when he was 11 years old, and fueled his efforts to overcome jumps and spins on the way to living his Olympic dreams.
I think he’s got a good chance. I think his work ethic and determination to get there is better than anyone I’ve seen out there, his coach said., Amy Evident of Los Felix.
The good thing about him is that you ask him to work on something or you work on something with him, but the next day is better. He is using everything and trying to take command or order or whatever is told to him. He will make sure it is done. And I think she has a good chance like Amber and Isa beau and Lindsay Thronged, whoever is one of the best players.
Lee did not think highly of himself in the American Championship because he felt he did not live up to his potential this season. He was first after the short program in the Cranberry Cup junior event but fell to third overall, and he finished eighth in the Grand Prix junior event in Linz, Austria. He won the Pacific Championship.
A Young Skating Resilience on the Road to Winter Olympic – Milano Cortina 2026
Part of the problem is that he has grown to about 5-foot-4 in the last year and has become uncomfortable with his growing body. It was a little hard to adjust to that he said but I think my skating has matured. Evidently there was concern for Lee before the American campaign.
Because he worked so hard and I just wanted to give him two programs where he could walk away and he could say, ‘I’m so proud that I did that said Evident. My hope is that he just goes and enjoys himself and learns about himself through this process.
Lee came in fifth place after the short program. That was a good win because a costly mistake in an element in last year’s short program left him in 11th place, giving him a steep climb to fifth place. This time, he pulled off a triple-triple-triple-toe combo and set sail.
He was close to a pin. Suddenly his expectations arose. Then I was like, ‘Holy shit, I’ve never been in this situation before he said.
He handled the pressure beautifully, enjoying his performance rather than ticking off each element in his mind like a shopping list. He made seven triple jumps without a single negative penalty kick from any of the nine judges; although he performed a triple-double axel-double axel sequence instead of a triple-triple combination, he scored 138.85 points, a personal best and three points more than Glenn’s average. His final total was 204.13 points.
Winter Olympic – Josephine Lee: Rising to the Challenge
His only misstep occurred when overwhelmed by the event, he tried to leave the ice through the Zamboni door instead of the skaters’ door.
You go on a show and you see a girl like that and you go, ‘Okay girl, you can do this Evident said. Just six more jumps. OK, you can continue doing this. You can sit up. Keep going.
They were both surprised and happy with his score, but there were four skaters left. Lee and Evident didn’t know if his No. 1 ranking would last for the program long and they didn’t know where he would end up.
Olympic Figure Skating Tickets
Lee did not see the final scorers or check the standings. My eyebrows fell off and I used them again. They fell when I cried kiss-and-cry. So I didn’t watch much of Amber’s whole game Lee said.
But my friends were texting me, saying, ‘Oh my God, you’re going to stop.’ Isa beau that’s why I didn’t watch him. But I didn’t know I won the freestyle until it was over. The way later.
Winter Olympic – Overcoming Nerves: Josephine Lee’s Journey to a Surprising Victory
Glenn and Leviton are on their way to the world championship, but Lee said he does not regret going back to the small worlds. His mother, lawyer Caroline Tseng, is from Taiwan, so Lee welcomes the opportunity to visit.
Since he didn’t expect to be good enough at the U.S. championships to be selected for the world junior team, the opportunity to gain high-level international experience was a bonus. I’m very grateful for this chance he said. He will face high expectations. Evident, who started coaching him at the end of 2020, believes that he is more prepared than last year.
I think with experience you know a lot of things. And he knows how to handle himself in a lot of things. So I think he’s going to be able to thrive in that environment. this year said Evident. My only hope for him, as I told him recently is to remain faithful. in his hard work. And stay in the moment, because I think everything else comes from that.

We are happy that Italy is improving said Marco Fabric, who won the ice dance bronze medal with partner Charlene Grignard in Saturday’s Final. We have really good skaters now, which is good for the development of our community. There’s a lot of pressure to skate in front of your home audience, but sometimes there’s no motivation.

Winter Olympic: Excitement in Pairs Figure Skating — Conti and Maci’s Bronze Medal Triumph
Skating in Italy is improving from having only two pairs before, now there are many Gaillardia added. They’re getting better for the men and the ladies. All the teams are working together.
Perhaps the loudest was Torino Pala vela in the Grand Prix Final when Nikolay Mamola won the junior men’s race. Winter Olympic dreams brought figure skater Deanna Stellato-Dudek back to the sport
Maturity is a plus, not a minus. It’s one of the many confidence zingers that Deanna Stellato-Dudek delivers while telling her fascinating story.
He’s a 40-year-old doubles figure skater who wants to compete for Canada at the Winter Olympic 2026. It’s an winter Olympic dream he left unfulfilled when he retired from sport at 17 years old.
The Chicago native was a silver medalist at the 2000 junior world championships in women’s singles for the United States, but withdrew due to injury. She got on with life – finished high school and started working as a medical esthetician.
Once he turned 30, he abruptly abandoned his burgeoning career in 2016 to become a skater again, sober.I was super clear when I first put the skates on Stellato-Dudek recalled to The Globe and Mail earlier this month. I went in that first day to come back and do the winter Olympic he said.

Now the trip is on full throttle. He and 31-year-old Mont realer Maxima Descamps are Canada’s top duo – a partnership that has grown since auditioning together in 2019. They’ve won a national title and a handful of international medals. Their first competition at the ISU Grand Prix is this weekend at Skate Canada International in Vancouver.
The discipline has long required young players – jumping, spinning, flipping – to be fearless enough to be thrown through the air on blades to be fit enough to work on a daily basis. The next oldest contestant is like 24 he jokes.

There was an instant when the 19-year-old American’s look broke back to realism. His eyes widen as the tautness leaves his facial muscles. He almost seems to not know where he is as the Bell Centre crowd in Montreal rumbles around him.
He has just finished six multiple jumps, with the quad Axel, the jump that he and he alone own. In a package appropriately set to the theme music from the TV series. It’s a program in which, Malinin later told, he would take each of those courtyards. As well as his gyrations, composition, step order, and a few triple jumps, too one element at a time.

I understood the huge change in what we have. In instruction to catch up with him, I need to train not only my jumps but all my practical rudiments as faultless as I can. I need to attain that, Winter Olympic Games, that quality. I need to practice a ration more.

Winter Olympic: Ilia Malinin’s Artistic Journey Toward Olympic Gold
I a deduction for me, because when I look back at how I skate. Occasionally I don’t enjoy watching myself in that creativity feature. I think that’s what I’ll spend the following season and the season following, earlier the Olympics, Winter Olympic, working on that, trying to find that sugary spot.
Although Malinin has always been enthused with sureness on the ice and off of its Quad God. His victory in Montreal was far from given, especially after he wavered to third place after the short program with a prickly by-his-values skate. Where presiding two-time world champion Uno Shoma was bright.
But we all know what occurred following. And that looks post-free skate long-established Even Ilia astonished Ilia. It nearly appears dreamlike that it occurred this early, he says of charming world gold. I supposed that it would take perhaps another year for me to get this gold medal.
It just gave me an understanding of how much I advanced in the past few terms. That my development was a lot earlier than I supposed. As he slithered off the ice in Montreal, Malinin was received by his father, Roman Skorniakov, a two-time Olympic skater for Uzbekistan at Nagano 1998. And Salt Lake City 2002 together with Ilia’s mother, Tatiana Malinina.
While Malinin has spent an important amount of time in Southern California with trainer Rafael Arutunian. The Unstoppable Rise of Figure Skating’s Quad God
She was crying happy crying, he says. And it was an open thing for me too, it was the first time I’d ever seen her like that. That very finish, Malinin says of the texture of his free skate, people have not seen me respond like that. They continuously see me as that, like cool, calm, poised person.
Nevertheless, I distinguished that all the work I put in was valuable. Should Malinin and his team select to tap into that second, it could deliver some understanding. As to what he wants his exact style to be moving onward. No, Olympic Figure Skating, not every race is a World final.

For Leah Neset, it was skating. She started skating at age three, following in her parents’ path to the ice. My mom was a figure skater, and my dad was a hockey player.
A native of Minot, North Dakota, Leah began her skating career there before moving to Colorado Springs in 2018. I relocated to train with coach Elena Dostatni which was when I began ice dancing with a partner.
Artem Markelov is Leah’s partner. He came to the United States to compete in ice dance with Leah in 2020. It’s a cool balance of artistry and athleticism, and I think what makes ice dance different is the relationship with a partner Leah said.
Leah and Artem said they spend about four to five hours a day practicing their routines. So we try to remember all the corrections and always try to improve them said Leah. We’re definitely nervous but once the song starts nerves, go away.

To motivate herself, Leah began working with the Female Athlete Program at Children’s Hospital of Colorado.
Therefore the Female Athlete Program at Children’s Hospital Colorado is a program designed to provide comprehensive, comprehensive care to young female athletes, including a team myself as a sports medicine physician and sports dietitian.
We see athletes together in our clinic for the CO management and then we bring in other specialists, including mental health therapists, physical therapists, endocrinologists, gynecologists, as needed to suit the needs of each athlete.
