Cohen will turn 40 this month. A graduate of Columbia University with a degree in general studies and now working for a major investment house while raising two young children—Dash and Paloma—She leads a lifestyle that is quite different from the intense athletic regimen she followed two decades ago. We thought it would be interesting to catch up with her to get some perspective on her current life and the US Women’s Figure Skating program in general.

The Shift in Figure Skating Cohen on Judging and Technical Demands

Jim Clash You’re the last U.S. women’s figure skater to stand on the winter Olympic podium—back in 2006. That’s incredible. Sasha Cohen It’s definitely surprising. Training programs evolve, and different countries often dominate at various times. The USA still has incredible talent, excelling in men’s dance and figure skating, but, as you say, we haven’t been able to put a woman on the podium since 2006. It’s disheartening as a former athlete and someone with roots in the USA.

Cohen: You’re not wrong. The sport has certainly shifted to favor higher technical difficulty and specific movements, particularly quadruple jumps. Because of this, skaters do not have time to develop their choreography in a way that highlights their personality and artistry. They have to accumulate all kinds of technical things from the beginning to the end of their programs, because this is what is reflected in the results, which ultimately determines whether they are on the podium.

At the top of the US, the whole package was considered and women had a chance to develop into mature skaters. It wasn’t just about the jumps, it was the skill on the ice that made him so fun and dynamic to watch. The Crash: When you were competing, how did you manage the attention that comes with fame—autographs, photos, and interviews—while staying focused on the business of skating?

Cohen: It’s helpful to have a coach or team manager who can be the one to say No more autographs, let him focus. Then you don’t have to be the bad guy [laughs]. But it’s hard because you see these people who have followed your career and finally have this opportunity to get an autograph or a photo.

When you’re on tour, the stakes are much lower and it’s really nice to have that one-on-one moment with someone who’s watched you since you were a kid. What we do isn’t done in isolation. It’s not just a race, it’s a performance in music with an emotional component. So it means a lot more to the audience and the fans. It is a very dynamic experience.

Cohen After the ceremonial lap, all the different countries began to take their respective seats on the benches to watch the opening ceremonies. Within two minutes of sitting down, two Secret Service agents came, put down this blanket and started telling people to run. We’re all like, what’s going on? They said the President would sit there. I called my mom and said, Mom, Mom, President Bush is going to sit next to me She laughed and said oh honey, I’m sure you’re wrong. I don’t think so.

Fifteen minutes later, when the President sat down next to me, I asked him Can you talk to my mom, will you say hello? She doesn’t believe you would sit next to me. He said sure and actually talked to him for a minute, a minute and a half, saying how much he loved opening ceremonies and how nice it was to talk to me. My mom told me later that she almost fell out of her chair watching from a restaurant bar in Salt Lake City. That was definitely a fun moment in those games.

Finding Balance Cohen on Motherhood and Managing Responsibilities

Crash You’re a mother yourself now. How do you balance that with your work and doing things like this interview?

Cohen You have to do things quickly [laughs]. I go to yoga, and it helps me to refocus, to have some calm, because it’s so hectic the rest of the time. One thing that is really hard is to meet all the requirements but not be able to do anything at all well. There’s a saying I once read about motherhood: You can be great at your job, great with the kids, great at this and that, but not all at the same time. It’s challenging, but it’s comforting to know that many other women share the same experience. Being a mother and participating in the world is a privilege—a balance of give and take.

But as my children are getting older, I am realizing how quickly time flies. It’s increasingly important for me to be present to influence them, play with them, and learn from them. You show up every day and try to be as present as possible, listening to that inner compass that tells you what’s really important.

Early Life and Family Background of Nathan Chen

Nathan Wei Chen was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, to parents who immigrated from China: Zhidong Chen, a research scientist from Guangxi, and Hetty Wang from Beijing. He has four older siblings: Alice, Tony, Colin and Janice Chen, who worked for Jennifer Doudna’s lab and is the co-founder of Mammoth Biosciences. Chen’s mother was very involved in his skating career from the beginning; she financed his skating activities and the pursuits of his siblings, working as a medical translator and cleaning houses. Chen was more energetic and daring than his siblings, whom he often tried to emulate. He aspired to be a hockey goaltender after watching his older brothers play hockey, but his mother gave him figure skates.

To improve his coordination and strength and to complement his skating, Chen’s mother enrolled him in gymnastics and ballet classes. He trained with Ballet West Academy for over six years and competed at the state level in gymnastics, placing first at the Utah State Boys Gymnastics Championships in St. Louis. George in 2008. As a child, Chen also trained as a pianist and won local competitions in his age group and later learned to play the guitar as an extracurricular activity. Nathan Chen was part of the surge in junior figure skating following the 2002 Winter Olympics in his hometown. He began skating at the age of three in a beginner class at the Salt Lake City Sports Complex, which served as a skating rink during the Olympics. He participated in his first figure skating competition in 2003. By the age of seven, Chen had started competing at the junior and intermediate levels in the U.S. Junior Figure Skating Championships, placing 10th in the level of minor boys in 2007; in the same event, he won the junior boys’ bronze medal in 2008 and the men’s intermediate silver medal in 2009.

Advancing to the Novice level in the 2009–2010 season, Chen competed at the 2010 US Senior Championships in Spokane, becoming the youngest US Novice Men’s Champion in history at the age of 10. Chen had begun working with former Czechoslovakian figure skater Karel Kovar, who used to train with Russian coach Alexei Mishin, and taught Chen to pull his arms across his torso in a seat belt position when spinning, a position Chen still uses. Kovar introduced Chen to fellow Czechoslovak figure skater Jozef Sabovčík, nicknamed Jumping Joe. Sabovčík was the first coach to tell Chen not to stop in the middle of a program during a competition. Chen worked with Kovar until he was nine years old and had begun taking lessons from Evgenia Chernyshyova, who was a native of Salt Lake City and more accessible.

He began working with dance specialist Rafael Arutyunyan when he was 10 years old; Chen and his mother drove from Salt Lake City to Lake Arrowhead, California, several times a year. The family didn’t have much money to spend on skates, lessons and racing suits, so Chen and his mother sometimes slept in their car. At age 11, Chen told his mother that he needed to move to further his career, and Chen and his mother moved to Southern California. Arutyunyan became his head coach in 2011.

A month later, Chen won his first world title at the 2018 World Championships, finishing first in both programs. He became the first skater to land eight quadruple jumps in a single competition – two in the short program and six in the free skate. He became the first American player to win the World Championship since Evan Lysacek in 2009 and the youngest world champion since Evgeni Plushenko in 2001. Overview of the Office of the Sports Integrity Commissioner and Its Impact on Athletes

However, they participated in the world championships in March, held in their training base of Montreal. The Office of the Sports Integrity Commissioner was opened in June 2022 to handle complaints and inquiries about national-level athletes in sports organizations that enter the program.

Former sports minister Pascale St-Onge created it as an independent body for handling abuse complaints following the Hockey Canada scandal that year. Since August 2023, the office has reported eight suspensions, including Sorensen’s. At 35 years old, he is the sixth individual to be suspended for incidents related to sexual abuse.

Nikolaj Sørensen: Achievements and Controversies

Nikolaj Sorensen (born February 18, 1989) is an ice dancer representing both Denmark and Canada. Competing for Canada with his skating partner Laurence Fournier Beau dry, he is a two-time Four Continents silver medalist, an eight-time Grand Prix medalist (including gold at the 2022 NHK Trophy), a five-time Challenger medalist (including gold at the 2019 CS Nebelhorn Trophy and 2022 CS Finlandia Trophy), and 2023 Canadian national champion. Fournier Beau dry and Sorensen competed for Canada at the 2022 Winter Olympic. Before that, they represented Denmark, earning six ISU Challenger Series medals and participating in both the world and European championships. In March 2018, Denmark released them to compete for Canada after Laurence was unable to Danish citizenship to compete in the Winter Olympic 2018.

Early Career and Partnerships of Nikolaj Sorensen

Sorensen started skating in 1996, encouraged by his father. He began competing internationally with Anne Thomsen in 2003, finishing twenty-fourth at the 2006 World Junior Championships. In 2007, he partnered with Czech skater Barbara Herold ova to represent Denmark. Together, they competed for one season, achieving a twenty-first place finish at the 2008 World Junior Championships.

In 2009, Sorensen teamed up with Canadian skater Katelyn Good to represent Denmark. In their debut season, they secured the Danish senior national title and finished seventeenth at the 2010 World Junior Championships, twenty-first at the 2010 European Championships, and twenty-fourth at the 2010 World Championships. The following year, they relocated from training in the United States under Mathew Gates to Montreal to be closer to Good’s mother.

On Gates’ recommendation, they started training with Marie-France Dubreuil and Patrice Lauzon at their newly established ice dance academy, which at that point had only four teams. Tragically, shortly after their move, Good’s mother passed away. Sorensen and Good concluded their partnership by placing twenty-ninth at the 2011 World Championships, after which Good decided to retire due to injury. In 2012, Sorensen began working with Canadian skater Vanessa Crone, but she opted not to compete with him.

Sorensen had a tryout with Canadian skater Laurence Fournier Beau dry from Quebec in February 2012. Initially, he chose to partner with Crone, but after Crone decided not to compete with him, he reached out to Fournier Beau dry five months later. The pair then opted to represent Denmark while continuing their training in Canada under Dubreuil and Lauzon.

Continued Competitive Journey and Championships Performance

Making their international competition debut in autumn 2013, they won gold at the 2013 Pavel Roman Memorial, silver at the 2013 Ice Challenge and bronze at the Torun Cup. At the 2014 Danish Championships, they were the sole participants in the ice dancing category.

In their debut at the ISU Championships, they placed thirteenth at the 2014 European Championships and finished the season by placing twenty-ninth at the 2014 World Championships in Saitama.

The duo participated in three ISU Challenger Series events earlier in the season, finishing fourth at the Volvo Open Cup, earning silver medals again at the Ice Challenge, and securing a bronze medal at the 2014 Autumn Classic.

They were again the only competitors in the ice dancing event of the Danish Championships. They finished ninth at their second European Championship and secured eleventh place at the 2015 World Championships in Shanghai.

Competitive Highlights and Setbacks

Fournier Beau dry/Sorensen won silver for their first event of the season at the Lombardy Trophy. They followed this achievement with a gold medal at the Nebelhorn Trophy, marking their first Challenger title and boosting their personal best by more than ten points. Returning to Grand Prix after a season away, they placed third in the rhythm jump at Skate America 2019, becoming one of the first teams to earn a perfect level 4 in the Finn step pattern jump.

 They also placed third in the free jump, winning the bronze medal. Sorensen called their first Grand Prix medal something we’ve dreamed about since we started skating together. At their second event, the 2019 Cup of China, they were again third in the rhythm jump and the only team at the event to earn a Level 4 in Finn step. Also third in the free jump, despite some minor issues resulting in a lower score than in previous events, they won their second Grand Prix bronze award. Sorensen later revealed that a knee injury had forced him to miss a week of training between competitions.

Fournier Beau dry/Sorensen did not compete at the 2020 Canadian Championships as the latter underwent a cartilage transplant and meniscectomy to repair his knee. On February 13, 2020, Skate Canada announced their participation in the 2020 World Championships. However, on March 6, 2020, they withdrew due to Sorensen’s ongoing recovery issues, and the championships were subsequently canceled just five days later.

Challenges and Triumphs in the 2020-2021 Season

Fournier Beau dry/Sorensen were set at the 2020 Skate Canada International, the event was cancel a result of the coronavirus pandemic. 

With the pandemic continuing to make in-person competition difficult, Fournier Beau dry/Sorensen competed in virtual indoor competition, winning the Quebec Sectionals and then taking silver at the 2021 Skate Canada Challenge. The 2021 Canadian Championships subsequently canceled.

On February 25, Fournier Beau dry and Sorensen were announce as part of the Canadian team at the 2021 World Championships in Stockholm.  They placed seventh in the rhythm jump, despite only receiving one of the four top spots in the Finn step pattern. In the free jump, they dropped to eighth place behind British Team Fear/Gibson by 0.04 points. Sorensen then admitted that he had left some points on the board. Their placing combined with Gilles/Poirier’s bronze medal win qualified three spots for Canadian diving teams at the 2022 Winter Olympic.

The team started the season at the 2021 CS Lombardian Trophy, winning the silver medal for the second time. Sorensen then commented that it wasn’t the best free dance today after spinning mistakes from both, but that we’ll just build from here. Heading into their first Grand Prix assignment of the year, the 2021 Skate America, they placed third in the rhythm jump. Fourth in the free jump, falling behind Spaniards Smart in that segment, they remained in bronze medal position overall by 0.44 points.

Achievements and Reflections on the winter Olympic Journey

Reflecting on our third major prize for Canada with a bronze medal, Fournier Beau dry called it so nice to come back after two years of toil and feel like the car is turning and the bodies are turning again. After winning another Challenger silver medal at the 2021 CS Cup Austria, next week, they won another bronze medal at their second Grand Prix assignment, the 2021 Rostelecom Cup.

At the 2022 Canadian Championships, held without an audience in Ottawa due to the pandemic, Fournier Beau dry/Sorensen placed second in both segments of the competition to take the silver medal.

They debuted a new choreographed dance by Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard’s score for Gladiator, a decision made three weeks ago. Sorensen said the original program was an idea we came up with when we were off the ice and trying to navigate the start of this pandemic.

So, you know, feelings change, and what we thought we needed changed during this season. The next day, they were name to the Canadian Winter Olympic team. Speaking on the occasion to Danish TV 2, Sorensen reflected that it’s a shame we couldn’t compete for Denmark because we’ve never been to the winter Olympic in ice dancing. I often think that small countries underrepresented in a sport like ice dancing.

Winter Olympic Performance and World Championships

Competing in the vault event at the 2022 Winter Olympic, Fournier Beau dry/Sorensen placed eighth in the rhythmic vault. A spin error from Sorensen saw them place eleventh in the free jump, dropping them to ninth overall.

They went on to finish the season at the 2022 World Championships in Montpellier, held with the absence of Russian figure skating teams due to the International Skating Union banning all Russian athletes due to their country’s invasion of Ukraine.

Sorensen battled a back injury during the competition, which cause problems in the free jump when their closing lift was abort, dropping them from eighth to ninth. He said, it’s unfortunate, but it happens. British Fear/Gibson. Sorensen said we couldn’t have asked for anything more.

Stellato-Dudek did competitive sports as a child, so the memories of flying high and facing down are familiar. He decided to ski full time and quit his job. He moved to Florida to partner with Nathan Bartholomew, who played for the US in the 2014 Olympics.

They competed together until the beginning of 2019, when Bartholomew was injured. There were no seasons to wait for Stellato-Dudek to recover, so they parted amicably. He was worried about finding a new partner because of his age.

I was like 36, 37 at the time, and all the guys were definitely going to be younger than me he said. They have to make a decision about skiing with me.

A coach recommended Descamps, a Canadian who worked with eight partners. They were quickly fired up and Stellato-Dudek canceled out his other attempts. He was impressed by his rock-solid strength on the ice and his determination to keep going.

I thought ‘how did I not know about this guy’ he said. And why hasn’t he conquered the worlds?

Stellato-Dudek moved to Montreal to study with him, and they both studied his Canadian citizenship and became an American citizen. The Canadian option seemed more promising so they began the process. He is hoping for a Canadian passport before the winter Olympic 2026.

Not long after they teamed up, the disease came, which interrupted their competition and training. They also faced other obstacles: waiting for his release from the US Figure Skating Association, and overcoming illnesses.

Kithira’s ankle is barely healing. Four-time Grand Prix medalist Rika Kithira announced Wednesday that she will miss the figure skating season due to an improperly healed stress fracture in her right ankle.

Kithira stated that recent MRI results indicated the ankle was healing, but it hadn’t yet reached a stage where she could skate with full strength and confidence. For Leah Neset, it was skating. She started skating at age three, following in her parents’ path to the ice. My mom was a figure skater, and my dad was a hockey player.

A native of Minot, North Dakota, Leah began her skating career there before moving to Colorado Springs in 2018. I relocated to train with coach Elena Dostatni which was when I began ice dancing with a partner.

Artem Markelov is Leah’s partner. He came to the United States to compete in ice dance with Leah in 2020. It’s a cool balance of artistry and athleticism, and I think what makes ice dance different is the relationship with a partner Leah said.

Leah and Artem said they spend about four to five hours a day practicing their routines.So we try to remember all the corrections and always try to improve them  said Leah.  We’re definitely nervous but once the song starts nerves, go away.

Leah has been working with the female athlete program for the past few years to now optimize her health and sport performance from a sports medicine and a sports nutrition approach.

Leah said the program has really helped her grow and she has recommended it to other athletes competing at a high level. They really helped me optimize my nutrition, help my bones and my body and be as healthy as I could be and perform at my best.

Leah won back-to-back US Junior National Championships. We have 2022, ’23 and 2024.

She is also the 2024 Junior World Champion and the 2023 Junior Grand Prix Final winner. This season she will be competing at the senior level for the first time, and her goal is gold. Our goal is one day we would like to represent the United States in the Olympics. It’s a dream she continues to pursue.

Ilia Malinin of the United States won his first world title at the age of 19 on Saturday night falling on his back in celebration after topping the men’s free skating world record with 227.79 points.
