Blockbuster matches, big guns shooting, rising stars, Super Overs, and incredible upsets are just a few of the ways that the ICC Men’s T20I World Cup has already exceeded expectations. So, let’s evaluate each team’s current position as we get closer to another exciting round of T20I action.
ICC T20 World Cup 2024: Current Situation
After going over each group, let’s evaluate which teams have advanced to the next round and which ones still have a lot of work ahead of them.
Group A
Squads: Pakistan, United States, India, Canada, Ireland
INDIA (1.455 NRR | 4 points)
With two victories in two outings and a respectable net run rate, India seems certain to advance to the next round. A win over the United States or Canada will probably be enough to guarantee this tournament heavyweight’s place.
USA (0.626 NRR | 4 points)
The USA has been quite the tale thus far. After a perfect start, the hosts probably just need to win one more game to advance. India will be the next opponent, playing in New York on June 12, and then Ireland will play in Florida in what is expected to be a major blockbuster match for both contenders.
CANADA (–0.274 NRR | 2 points)
After losing to the USA in the first game of the tournament, the Canadians bounced back with a 12-run victory over Ireland to stay in the running. Next up, Canada plays Pakistan in a match that the team almost certainly needs to win.
PAKISTAN (–0.150 NRR | 0 points)
Pakistan has so far experienced a loser who must bear the consequences for every thrilling match and upset victory. After two losses to begin the season, the Asian superpower needs to defeat Canada and then Ireland, turn around their -0.150 net run rate and hope that either India or the USA makes a mistake.
IRELAND (–1.712 NRR | 0 points)
For Ireland, it’s almost over; they only need to defeat Pakistan and the United States and hope for more favourable outcomes.
Group B
Squads: England, Scotland, Namibia, Australia, Oman
SCOTLAND (2.164 NRR | 5 points)
The Scots are leading Group B after victories over Namibia and Oman, even though the all-UK match in Barbados ended in a No Result. They might have already done enough to advance, but a victory over Australia on June 15 would solidify it. There’s a slim chance Namibia or England can catch up if the Australians win that match.
AUSTRALIA (1.875 NRR | 4 points)
The Australians are undefeated and in good form, as evidenced by their decisive victory over the English. With one more triumph, they will probably cruise into the next round.
OMAN (–1.613 NRR | 0 points)
Oman can’t go to the next round because they’ve already lost three of their matches. But they have shown some outstanding cricketing performances, including putting up a fight against Australia, so going forward, their efforts should be encouraged.
NAMIBIA (-0.309 NRR | 2 points)
Despite inconsistent outcomes thus far, Namibia remains in Group B. These matches would have been closely watched by Africans as soon as the draw was made, and they are now unquestionably significant.
ENGLAND (–1.800 NRR | 1 point)
England is well and truly out of it in Group B, sitting in fourth place with just one point to their name. As a minimum, they must defeat Oman and Namibia and hope for favourable outcomes from the remaining matches. The most likely course for England is to find a means to get their net run rate back to -1.800 and hope that other outcomes, particularly the Australia-Scotland match, go their way.
Group C
Teams: Uganda, Papua New Guinea, West Indies, New Zealand, Afghanistan
There is still plenty of cricket to be played in Groups C and D, considering there hasn’t been much of it played thus far. This is where it all lies, though.
AFGHANISTAN (5.225 NRR | 4 points)
Against New Zealand, the Afghans made a major statement indicating that they were serious contenders for the championship. With a net run pace that dwarfs that of every other team in their group, they are undefeated. Afghanistan is one step closer to moving on to the next phase, but a victory versus the West Indies or PNG would guarantee it.
WEST INDIES (3.574 NRR | 4 points)
So far, the West Indies have shown great initiative in managing Uganda and Papua New Guinea. To advance, though, they’ll probably need to defeat either Afghanistan or New Zealand; their next match is against the Black Caps on June 12 in Trinidad and Tobago.
UGANDA (–4.217 NRR | 2 points)
Uganda has already secured their maiden ICC T20 World Cup victory, indicating a good campaign. With only one victory in three games, they have little chance of progressing; to stand a chance, they would need to defeat New Zealand handily and hope that everything else works out.
PAPUA NEW GUINEA (–0.434 NRR | 0 points)
Following their crucial defeat to Uganda, PNG is probably not going to go from the Group stage. They intend to travel to Afghanistan and New Zealand to play a meddling role and pick up some knowledge in the process. You may also like: Australia T20 World Cup: Every team for the ICC T20 World Cup
NEW ZEALAND (–4.200 NRR | 0 points)
The Kiwis will be looking to move on from their one game thus far as soon as possible. The humiliating defeat to Afghanistan could prove costly unless they can run the table and win three from three vs the West Indies, Uganda, and PNG, which seems out of the question. Group C’s outcome will now be decided by the outcome of New Zealand’s stunning victory over the Windies.
Group D
Teams: Nepal, Sri Lanka, Netherlands, South Africa, Bangladesh
SOUTH AFRICA (0.603 NRR | 6 points)
Before dispatching the Netherlands in a tough match, the Proteas secured the crucial victory over Sri Lanka to get off to a quick start. With another close finish against Bangladesh, their bowling assault proved to be quite effective in securing the win and moving South Africa closer to qualification.
BANGLADESH (0.075 NRR | 2 points)
The Tigers advanced to second place in Group D after a close victory over Sri Lanka. They are still in a good position to qualify, but they blew a great chance in the thrilling match against South Africa in New York. Bangladesh probably just needs to defeat the Netherlands in their next game to advance, assuming Sri Lanka, who have already lost two, is unable to catch up. A victory over Nepal in their last game might guarantee a position on NRR.
NETHERLANDS (0.024 NRR | 2 points)
Without a doubt, the Dutch must win one from two against Bangladesh and most likely also against Nepal. Although it will be difficult, the Netherlands still has a chance to go to the next round.
NEPAL (–0.539 NRR | 0 points)
Although their defeat by the Netherlands makes things difficult, Nepal still has three games left, so everything is still possible. However, given how Group D is shaping up, they’ll likely need to win every one of them, which will be very challenging given that they’ll be starting as the underdog in each one.
SRI LANKA (–0.777 NRR | 0 points)
A willing person can always find a way. Before performing a rain dance in Saint Vincent and hoping that the Bangladesh-Netherlands match on June 13 doesn’t transpire, Sri Lanka must first win decisively against Nepal and the Netherlands. Not insurmountable?
