In front of a boisterous sellout crowd of 20,593 spectators at Q2 Stadium. Defender Emily Fox scored her first goal for her country, while midfielder Lindsey Horan added another off a successful penalty. The USA tried to find ways to break down the Irish early on, so it was a physical encounter from the start.
The early going of the game was a chess match with both sides switching possession with the majority of the action taking place in the middle third. After a good run of controlled possession ended with a cross from left-back Crystal Dunn that found forward Sophia Smith in the box, the USA presented its first threat in the eighth minute.
Smith stretched to connect with a shot but her attempt missed the mark as she made her first appearance of the year after returning from a minor injury. When a corner kick resulted in a header at the back post in the 19th minute, Ireland nearly took the lead.

However, forward Alex Morgan did well to clear the danger off the goal line, and midfielder Rose Lavelle quickly made a clearance. Five minutes later, Ireland put together a string of assaults, and the USA demonstrated its defensive prowess by stopping a string of successive close-range shots.
In the 36th minute, the U.S. came close to scoring when Lavelle found Smith in the penalty area after making room for herself close to the finish line on the left side. Smith delivered a strong shot that was blocked by Irish custodian Courtney Brosnan.
A minute later, Fox received the ball from midfielder Andi Sullivan deep in the middle of the field, took her time to dribble, and then buried her first career goal with a low drive from outside the box into the lower left corner. Mallory Swanson, a forward, was stretchered off the pitch shortly before halftime after suffering a left knee injury from a heavy tackle. In her place, Trinity Rodman took over.
Both teams attacked with greater ferocity in the second half, with the Americans creating many chances highlighted by tight shots from Rodman and Lavelle after some explosive team build-ups. Julie Ertz, a midfielder, replaced Sullivan in the 67th minute. This was her first appearance for the USWNT since the bronze medal game of the Tokyo Olympics and her first cap in 611 days.
Ertz, who received recognition before the game for earning her 100th cap in March 2020, becomes the 15th woman to play for the USWNT after giving birth to her baby in August 2022.
USWNT Player Lindsey Horan
Horan was fouled inside the box while controlling a pass from Ertz with her back to the goal as the U.S. kept up the pressure on the Irish defense, earning her a penalty kick.
Horan took the opportunity to capitalize and doubled with a strong strike the lead and seal the win. Despite the close score, the USA was in control the whole match, scoring 25 shots with six of them being on target while holding the Republic of Ireland to just eight shots with one of them being on goal. The USA also had 10 corner kicks to Ireland’s 6, and they had 70 percent of the possession.
The two teams will square off on Tuesday, April 11 at 7:30 p.m. ET / 6:30 p.m. CT at the brand-new CITY PARK in St. Louis on HBO Max, Universo, and Peacock. Becky Sauerbrunn, a native of St. Louis, will be celebrated in her hometown for completing her 200th camp at the beginning of the year.
