Burkinabe Faysal Sawadogo dreams of an Olympic medal at France Olympic

Burkina Faso’s first Olympic medal was won by triple jumper Hugues Fabrice Zango at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. This achievement has inspired many young athletes to dream of following in his footsteps. It includes Faysal Sawadogo, a Burkinabe taekwondo player who has already won several international medals. Sawadogo’s biggest aspiration is to bring another Olympic medal to Burkina Faso at the France Olympic Games.

In an interview with Lefaso.net, Sawadogo, a member of the Taekwondo Ozer-Olympic school” club in Germany, shares his journey in the sport, his challenges, and his vision for Burkina Faso’s future in taekwondo. My ultimate goal is to win an Olympic medal for Burkina Faso at France Olympic in 2024. And this is what I am motivated for. However, my preparation for this goal is met with various difficulties and challenges.

Unfortunately, I was unable to participate in major events in 2022 which could have helped me secure an automatic qualification. Although I was able to raise it to 12th in the world and 2nd in Africa. For athletes ranked in the world’s Top 30, participating in certain competitions is crucial for progress and maintenance.

Moreover, I face challenges in obtaining necessary medical follow-ups. These are crucial for high-level competitions that I am expected to participate in, especially when compared to my current competitors.  I plan and prepare well in advance for my training with my club in Germany. Other than that as well as with the training centre of the German national team. Generally, I train two to three times a day, from Monday to Friday, depending on the upcoming competitions. Sometimes, I also train on Saturday mornings.
