Denis Tenโs Lasting Mark on Kazakh Winter Olympic Figure Skating
To understand Shaidorovโs rising influence, one must look back at the legacy of Denis Ten. A bronze medallist at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic and a silver medallist at the 2013 World Championships, Ten was a trailblazer who made Kazakhstan believe it belonged on the global Winter Olympic figure skating stage. His untimely death in 2018 at age 25 left a void that was both emotional and professional. For years, Kazakhstan lacked a visible successorโsomeone who could carry Tenโs vision forward in the rink.
Ten was more than just a figure skater; he was a cultural ambassador, a creative soul, and a national icon. His artistry connected deeply with audiences, and his technical courage made him competitive against the best in the world. In losing Ten, Kazakhstan lost a foundational pillar of its emerging skating identity. You Can Read Winter Olympic 2026: A First Look at Uno Shomaโs Ice Brave Olympic Figure Skating Show
Mikhail Shaidorov: The New Hope
Born in 2005, Mikhail Shaidorov never had the chance to train directly with Ten, but he grew up watching his performances. I remember watching Denis on YouTube and thinking, โThis is what skating should be, Shaidorov told Kazakh media after a strong showing at a junior international competition. That admiration grew into ambition, and Shaidorov began training intensely, developing his craft in both artistry and technique.
Shaidorov first gained international attention during the ISU Junior Grand Prix series, where his precision, musicality, and expressive range began to earn him fans and respect from judges. While many junior skaters focus heavily on technical content, Shaidorov has worked to balance quads and triple axels with nuanced storytellingโechoing Tenโs stylistic influence.
International Breakthroughs
In 2023, Shaidorov made a significant leap at the World Junior Winter Olympic Figure Skating Championships, finishing in the top ten. This marked Kazakhstanโs best menโs result since Tenโs departure from the junior ranks. More importantly, it signaled to the international skating community that Kazakhstan was back in contention.
The following season, Shaidorov competed in Challenger Series events and earned a podium finish at the Denis Ten Memorial Trophyโan emotional and symbolic achievement. The trophy, held annually in Almaty since 2019, honors Tenโs legacy and has become a meaningful stage for Kazakh skaters to perform before a home crowd. Shaidorovโs silver medal finish there was both a personal breakthrough and a national moment of pride.
Artistic Identity and Technical Firepower
Shaidorovโs programs reflect a young skater carving out a unique identity while carrying echoes of Tenโs influence. His short programs often lean toward dramatic and classical scoresโrecently skating to Toscaโwhile his free skates explore deeper emotional narratives. His 2024โ25 season programs are choreographe by international talents who recognize his ability to connect emotionally with the audience.
Technically, Shaidorov has mastered the triple axel and is working on consistent quad toe loops and Salchows. At the junior level, he was already one of the most technically balance skaters in Central Asia. As he matures and his strength increases, more quads are expect to follow.
Yet, Shaidorovโs real power lies in how he makes skating feel like art again. Judges often comment on his skating skills, transitions, and musical timingโall qualities that are not always evident in younger athletes focused solely on jumps.
Building a Future for Kazakh Winter Olympic Figure Skating
Shaidorovโs rise comes at a time when Kazakhstan is slowly reinvesting in its Winter Olympic figure skating infrastructure. Since Tenโs death, the Kazakhstan Skating Federation has worked to improve coaching access, host more international events, and create scholarship pathways for young skaters. Still, the journey is steep. The country lacks a deep field of elite-level competitors, and most promising athletes need to train abroad to access world-class facilities and coaching.

Shaidorov currently splits his training between Kazakhstan and Russia, receiving choreography from internationally known coaches and working under technical specialists who have produced Olympic-caliber skaters. This dual training approach has allowed him to grow steadily without losing his national identity. Crucially, Shaidorov is not alone. A new generation of Kazakh skatersโsuch as Aizhan Baimukhanova on the womenโs sideโis emerging. Together, they form a potential team that could qualify for Olympic group events by 2026 or 2030.
Eyes on Winter Olympic Milano Cortina 2026
While still young, Shaidorov is already considered a leading candidate to represent Kazakhstan at the Winter Olympic Milano Cortina 2026. Should he qualify, it would mark the first time since Ten that Kazakhstan has had a genuine medal outside chance in menโs singles skating.
Although expectations are being managed carefully, the skating world is watching. Olympic qualification for individual events will depend heavily on his performances at the 2025 World Championships, where placing in the top 24 could secure a spot for his nation. If successful, it would symbolize a full-circle moment for Kazakh Winter Olympic figure skatingโa decade after Tenโs final Olympic appearance.
Winter Olympic 2026: Beyond the Ice Legacy and Responsibility
Shaidorov understands the emotional burden of being considered Tenโs successor. Denis was special, he said in a 2024 interview. I donโt want to be compared to him, but I want to continue what he started. That humility has earned him admiration both in Kazakhstan and abroad. He often visits the Denis Ten Memorial in Almaty and has participated in tribute events that celebrate Tenโs contributions beyond sport.
In a country where winter sports struggle for attention outside of hockey and speed skating, Winter Olympic figure skating artistic allure has always held a quieter, more devoted following. Shaidorovโs emergence may change that, drawing young talent into the rinks and reminding Kazakhs of the beauty and possibility that lies on the ice.
Winter Olympic Figure Skating Legacy Lives On: Shaidorov Charts a New Course After Denis Ten
The road to senior success is never guaranteed in Winter Olympic figure skating. Injuries, competition depth, and mental pressure can derail even the most promising careers. But if Shaidorovโs current trajectory continues, he may one day find himself not only on Olympic ice but also in the hearts of fans who once believed Denis Ten was irreplaceable.
And perhaps Ten isnโt being replacedโonly honored, through a new chapter written in jumps, spins, and musical grace. Shaidorov doesnโt need to skate in Tenโs shadow. Heโs building something of his own, rooted in legacy but reaching toward a new horizon.
