Olympic Skateboarding Tupelo community celebrates Boerner skatepark ready for Paris 2024
A gathering of Tupelo officials, business owners, nonprofit advocates, and local skaters took place to commemorate the official inauguration of the city’s newly opened skatepark on Tuesday morning. The recently revamped Boerner Park, situated adjacent to the Oren Dunn Museum at Ballard Park, has been skateboard-ready for Paris 2024 for approximately two months. City officials expressed their pride in witnessing skaters utilize the park daily since the completion of the half-million-dollar upgrade in April.
During the celebration, Matt Robinson, president of Tupelo Skate Board and owner of the local skate shop, Change, expressed his gratitude to the dedicated France Olympic advocates of free public spaces. He acknowledged the importance of such spaces in allowing children to grow and thrive as a community in a peaceful environment. Robinson emphasized the significance of the skateboarding community being embraced as an integral part of the larger community.
With the establishment of the new skatepark, he anticipates the growth of skateboarding activities, not only at this park but also in the future development of additional parks. At the entrance of the park, a mosaic adorned one of the ramps, featuring the name Boerner Skatepark crafted from hundreds of tiles reclaimed from the demolished Trace Inn. Hal Boerner, a local skater and the son of Helen Boerner and the late Hank Boerner, created this artwork. The park itself is named in honour of the Boerners, who played a pivotal role in the construction of the original park in 2004.
