The Summer Games 2028 will extend it again. Hungary’s Alfred Hajos won the first gold. He took the 100m freestyle. The early races were held in open water. That lasted until London 1908. Athens 1896 had four men’s events. Distances ranged from 100m to 1200m. Women joined in at Stockholm 1912. Fanny Durack of Australia won the 100m freestyle. Great Britain won the relay. The Los Angeles Olympic pool will honor that legacy. Each new race adds to a story. That story is more than a century old. It keeps growing. Swimmers of every era chased speed. Today’s athletes carry the same drive.
Swimming kept changing with time. The 50m battery inwards at Seoul 1988. Matt Biondi of the USA won the men competition in world-record time. That event has run at every Games since. Tokyo 2020 added the mixed 4x100m medley relay. It also added the women’s 1500m freestyle. The men’s 800m freestyle joined as well. Change is part of the sport.
