Olympic Rowing Tickets: Veteran Inverness rower at 83 teams up with Olympic son for Slovenia race
The Inverness Rowing Club honorary president raced in the over-60s category in the double sculls race, where they got fourth place in the final. But for Roy, the match meant much more than racing, saying it was a personal victory to be able to still join in the sport he loves. The retired chartered surveyor, who lives in Belmaduthy in Ross-shire, had a great sporting past, having liked playing rugby in his younger years.
He was also a keen rower and skier until his health issues, which he thought could be the end of his sporting days. However, pushed by his son Alan, who raced in the coxless pair at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and won gold at the 2015 European Championship in Poland. He was moved to hit the water again.
Roy overcame prostate cancer and two knee replacements to row again
The idea was made last December when my son and I had a row in a boat. I havenโt been competing for seven years because of various setbacks. I have had both knees replaced and was diagnosed with prostate cancer at stage two. Alan gave me the idea that we should try racing a boat in the masters this year.

Olympic Rowing Tickets: Aged 83 Inverness rowing president takes on Slovenia with Olympian son
Alan (40), who works as a pro rowing coach and is based in Auchtertool in Fife, says his first race experience was with his father. After he competed at the World Masters last year, he was eager to explore the idea of whether he could row with Roy again. My first ever race win was in the doubles with him in the Generation Sprint event when I was 13, when you had to row with a parent.
It was where I learned what it was like to win, and I thought it was a nice idea to race with him once. I wanted to enjoy the sentimentality and for him to feel that joy again, as I think he might have lost touch with what the sport can bring. But with father and son living 150 miles apart.
Alan recalls winning his first race beside his father at age thirteen
The only times they got into a boat together before the race were once in December and a few days of training before the big event in Slovenia. As part of his job, Alan trains remotely with rowers around the world, making plans and regimes to prepare athletes for competition. He did the same for Roy, which he said he took seriously to prepare him for the big event.

Olympic Rowing Tickets: Inverness rowing club honorary president returns to racing at 83 with son
I wanted to make sure it wasnโt going to be a bad thing to put on him. I told him he didnโt need to always go on the rowing machine and could just go for a walk to keep his fitness. My mum said she noticed he was getting better and getting into a good routine. I would get videos of him training at home or in the boat, and I managed to give him tips and advice on what to do.
That is what I do in my job with athletes around the world remotely on how to grow their rowing journey. It works well and allows rowers to work on changes in their own time. It all worked, and when it came to racing, we did well. Being able to handle the remote training plan well, Roy was also able to train on the Caledonian Canal with his mate Tom Baker.
Father and son prepare through remote coaching and Canal training
The pair bought a double sculls boat which was used in the 2012 Olympics in London and often rowed in Inverness with him in preparation for the competition. Alan put us in touch with someone who had an old Empacher boat that was used at the Olympics, which Tom and I bought. We had been training in it since the end of April, and it was good preparation for me for Slovenia. Click to read more about Olympic Rowing Tickets.
Olympic Rowing Tickets: Olympian son and his 83 year old father race together in Slovenia regatta
Alan made a training plan for me where I only got one day off a week. Quite often, the training was land-base with the rowing machine and bike, where some days were low-intensity training and some days high-intensity training. Alan always asked if I was feeling fine after each session, and I said, funnily enough, I did. Perhaps we didnโt put the speed up high enough.
The pair went to Slovenia where they competed in the menโs over-60 age group double sculls due to the average of their combined ages. In the final, they finished fourth in the six-boat race. Roy was delighted with their performance and was thrilled to be involved in the competition. It was such a buzz and quite amazing to be involved with.
Pair finish fourth in Slovenia and eye the 2027 World Masters in Italy
There were lots of international and Olympic athletes taking part, and you never knew who you were racing against. Alan said the pair felt like winners and are now considering taking part in the 2027 World Masters at Farrese in Italy. He said that, as well as proving to himself that he can still compete in sport. He has proven to others that age is no wall. The result was unimportant.
It was more about getting Dad out there, being in a competitive environment, and going on a trip where he realises that heโs still got it. People have told him it is great to see him race, and the event was so helpful. I think it has inspired him to keep going in sport. It has been a very rewarding experience and hopefully inspired anyone who thinks they are too old to do a certain thing. He has shown there is no reason you canโt.
