Nothing to score from direct free kicks
There were 81 goals recorded in the group stage, but none came from a clear free kick. Only one goal was scored from a free kick during Euro 2020, and that came from Mikkel Damsgaard vs England in the semifinals. Gareth Bale scored two of the four goals in Euro 2016 more (so far) than in the combined total of the prior two tournaments.
This is consistent with local trends: in the top five leagues in Europe, the percentage of free kicks that are shot at goal in the final third has decreased from 24.6% in 2008–09 to 18.8% in 2022–23.
Phil Foden to Harry Kane with one pass
Opta provided this particularly incriminating statistic about England: Phil Foden passed to goalkeeper Jordan Pickford three times more frequently than he did to his attacking partner Harry Kane one time. Are the more general figures equally poor? Most of the time. Only Serbia and Scotland had more expected goals (xG) than England, whose games vs Serbia and Slovenia had lower xG stands than any other Premier League match from the previous season.
England is 20th out of 24 teams with 28 attempts on goal. However, there are some advantages: Surprisingly, Gareth Southgate’s team has the best crossing accuracy (40.6%) among the Europeans and is third in terms of passing accuracy (90%).
Cagey Group C scored seven goals.
England also leads the world in xGA, or expected goals conceded. With three games played, their 1.1 total is among the smallest at Euro 2024 (albeit it is still somewhat more than the 1.0 they allowed in). But is that due more to England’s tenacious defence or their feeble offensive opponents?
Only seven goals were scored in six games for Group C (every other group scored at least eleven), which was a record only surpassed by Group C in 2016. Both of the championship games ended goalless for the first time at a European Championship, providing an unmatched, unwelcome record.
Lukaku’s seven shots on goal
Not just England is struggling with bad results and disgruntled supporters. With four points and two goals, Belgium barely made it to second place in Group E. Romelu Lukaku, who had three goals disallowed by VAR, has come to represent the team’s offensive disappointments. However, with seven shots on goal one more than Kylian Mbappé, who played one fewer game he was the most dangerous striker in the group stage.
Along with their position in the top six for xG, possession (55.7%), and attacks (174), Domenico Tedesco’s team has optimism going into their matchup with another undercooked favourite, France, in the round of 16. You may also like: Gareth Southgate has expressed optimism that Luke Shaw could recover from his injury in time to be included in England’s Euro 2024 squad.
In a single match, eighteen cards are revealed
To wrap up Group F, Turkey defeated the Czech Republic 2-1, but a Romanian took centre stage. Tomas Chory and Antonin Barak received two red cards and sixteen yellow cards from referee Istvan Kovacs. Ten Turkish players were also booked, as well as two more Czech players. Not content to stop there, Kovacs also took down the names of four unutilized stand-ins.
The most unclean match in Euro 2020 history saw 161 yellow cards totalled (compared to 151 overall). Additionally, the match that ended in a group stage red card count was treble by the closer; the only other player sent off was Ryan Porteous of Scotland in the first game against Germany.
At 23 seconds, the fastest goal in the history of Euro Cup
When Nedim Bajrami scored in Dortmund after just 23 seconds, he stunned Italy and delighted Albania’s “red wall.” Although his team lost 2-1, Bajrami’s fastest-ever Euro goal guaranteed Albania’s spot in history. This year has seen both extremely late and very early goals.
Two of the fastest-ever European goals, Youri Tielemans against Romania (1 minute 13 seconds) and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia vs Portugal (1 minute 32 seconds), are also among the top five. At Euro 2024, there have been 13 goals recorded before the fifteenth minute, with the most productive minutes being 16–30 (17 goals).
Spain’s possession percentage is 54%
Thanks to Luis de la Fuente’s more direct style, Spain emerged as the sole squad to win all three of their group matches. The difference between La Roja and that team’s Euro 2020 campaign is striking: during their run to the semifinals, Luis Enrique’s squad attempted 4,688 goals (781 per game) and 81 dribbles (13.5pg).
Reorganized around the ball-handling prowess of Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal, Spain has made 66 dribbles (22 points per game) while completing 1,470 passes (490 points per game) thus far. The most notable is their decline in possession, which is now at 54% in Germany after going from 60.8% at Euro 2016 to 66.8% at Euro 2020.
Georgia recovers 134 balls
Underdogs Georgia defeated Portugal with just 28% of the ball, easily advancing to the round of 16. Outperforming all 24 teams, Willy Sagnol’s team is succeeding despite having the worst xGA (7.9) and anticipated goal difference (-4.1). Their quick-thinking defense has been a major factor in this.
They got back the ball 134 times, which is even more than high-pressing Austria. In addition, Georgia leads the league in wins (27), tackles made (55) and ball clearances (100). Giorgi Mamardashvili, who has 20 saves, has been an excellent final line of defense when all else failed.
Kroos completed 326 passes
According to the offensive stats from the group stage, Germany and Portugal are the favorites to defeat. When it comes to passing accuracy, control of the ball, goal attempts, and completed passes, the two heavyweights are in the lead. With Toni Kroos as their creative focal point, the hosts secured eight goals (more than the total for Group C).
Kroos has completed 326 of 341 passes. Even though Germany lost in the round of sixteen in Euro 2020, the midfielder was one of the most proficient passers, completing 353 passes. However, his current rate of 108 passes per match indicates a significant improvement and implies he may lead his team far further this time.
900: Schmid nets a historic goal
The 900th goal in a Euro championships match was scored by Romano Schmid. He gave Austria a 2-1 lead over the Netherlands in Group D. In the 1992 final, Kim Vilfort’s goal for Denmark was the 200th goal in tournament history. Since the event increased beyond eight nations in 1996. The goal-scoring rate has increased tremendously. Averaging 2.25 goals per game.
The group round has seen some very competitive play. That is fewer goals per game than the record-breaking 2.79 from Euro 2020. It is just higher than what was achieved in the 30 years prior from Euro 96 and 2016. Euro Cup fans worldwide can book Euro 2024 Tickets from our online platform www.eticketing.co.
