Bowe thinks incredible British Lions series

Former Ireland and British & Irish Lions wing Tommy Bowe have warned the visitors to expect a tough series against the Springboks during their 2021 tour of South Africa.

Bowe was a member of the Lions squad that last toured South Africa in 2009 when the tourists suffered a 2-1 series defeat by the Springboks. Rugby fans can book British lions rugby tickets on our website on exclusively discounted prices.

He started all three Tests against the Boks, but Bowe most vividly remembers the thrilling second Test, when the hosts claimed a 28-25 victory at Loftus Versfeld thanks to Morne Steyn’s long-range penalty winner.

Speaking to the Lions website, Bowe recalled his feelings on that day and the incredible atmosphere created by the supporters.

‘It’s going to be an incredible series and it will be incredibly difficult for the Lions,’ Bowe told the Lions website.

‘My memories of that 2009 Tour are just that second Test – I will never forget the bus going to the stadium in Pretoria. I’ve never seen passion from a crowd like I saw that day going into the stadium in Pretoria – people were shaking the bus and shouting all sorts!

‘The reverberation of the crowd in the changing room of the stadium was just outrageous – you could just feel the supporter’s right outside.’

Bowe added that the World Cup-winning Springbok side with the likes of Cheslin Kolbe and Pieter-Steph du Toit will put the Lions through a tough series next year.

‘The Lions are going to be up against the world champions, and South Africa showed that they’re ruthless, physical and a match for anyone. The way they played against England in the World Cup Final, they just showed how difficult they are to play against.

‘I think Pieter-Steph du Toit is just an absolute machine, and of course, they’ve also got Cheslin Kolbe, who’s at the opposite end of the spectrum size-wise but is just so gifted. He’s somebody who, the minute he gets the ball in his hands, can get the whole crowd on their feet to see what he can do. They have no shortage of talent in their team, so it’s going to be an incredible series.’

Scott Robertson reveals request to join British and Irish Lions tour

Scott Robertson has uncovered that he moved toward Warren Gatland about going along with him on the British and Irish Lions visit through South Africa one year from now.

The Crusaders mentor says he’s enthusiastic about getting global training experience subsequent to passing up the All Blacks’ top activity to Ian Foster.  Rugby fans can book British and Irish lions tour tickets on our website on exclusively discounted prices.

“When I missed the All Blacks work I really connected with Gats and inquired as to whether I could go on that visit,” he said. “I figured, look on the off chance that I can’t be engaged with the All Blacks, what’s the greatest thing – or really greater in its own self the Lions visit – to get included.

“I said ‘look, I couldn’t imagine anything better than to support you on the off chance that I can’.”

Robertson, who drove the Crusaders to their fourth consecutive Super Rugby title this year, said his solicitation has been taken to Lions the executives.

“I’m pausing. We’ll see what occurs,” he said. “Clearly there’s a great deal to work out with Covid and the British and Irish Lions visit. However, we had a couple decent discussions since and he must experience his line of the executives to settle on a choice.

“Something that truly drives me and propels me is likely to learn and comprehend. Clearly Gats has been enormously fruitful at the universal level as a mentor so he’s an individual to learn off and furthermore permits me to not need to go seaward to really mentor and get that global experience.”

The 45-year-old, who many accepted merited the All Blacks training work over Foster, said he’s glad at the Crusaders however is available to instructing abroad later on.

“From an individual note, I have a youthful family. I couldn’t want anything more than to remain with the Crusaders as long as could reasonably be expected but at the same time I’m very careful about planning of jobs on the worldwide market and what occurs over in Europe.

“One reason I played in France is so I could learn French to mentor there one day. In the event that that is the best thing and the correct planning, at that point extraordinary. I are very brave.”

In the interim, South African rugby supervisor Jurie Roux has raised questions about following year’s Lions visit, saying it could be deferred if fans can’t make a trip because of the worldwide pandemic.

Roux said the arrangement planned for July 2021 won’t be monetarily reasonable if fans aren’t permitted to go to games due to Covid-19 limitations.

“We are clearly taking a gander at various possibilities around what occurs if Covid proceeds in the manner that it right now does,” Roux revealed to SA Rugby Mag.

“Clearly, first prize is that that doesn’t occur. Second prize is that there are a few limitations, and we can oversee in those limitations.

“To be reasonable, no onlookers and a failure for individuals to travel would monetarily not make this practical and there would be a genuine reevaluation on how we at that point proceed as far as the visit.”

Boks need to get back up to speed

As the 2021 British and Irish Lions visit looms, South Africa’s players should recover a physical and mental edge, composes previous Springbok chief JEAN DE VILLIERS in the most recent SA Rugby magazine. Rugby fans can book British and Irish lions tour tickets on our website on exclusively discounted prices.

It’s acceptable to see that the British and Irish Lions visit to South Africa will proceed as booked one year from now. The South African Rugby Union just as the travel industry will positively profit by the matches arranged around the nation.

Boks need to get back up to speed
Boks need to get back up to speed

The neighborhood players a large portion of who have been hanging tight their entire professions for this chance will get the chance to handle the acclaimed composite side from the northern half of the globe.

All things considered, South African rugby will confront various extraordinary difficulties ahead of the pack up to the Lions arrangement in 2021. While serious rugby has just continued in Australasia and will restart in the UK and Europe this August, it is not yet clear whether the dispatch of a South African household competition will be additionally deferred.

Without a doubt, as the many months pass by, one thinks about what number of Tests the Springboks will play this season. The direst outcome imaginable could see Jacques Nienaber training the side just because of the Lions on 24 July 2021.

Players must concentrate on controlling the controllable for the present. There will consistently be outside weights and difficulties, and players must acknowledge that specific circumstances for example, the current emergency is outside their ability to control.

South Africa’s players will come back to play far later than their worldwide partners. Subsequently, they will make them make up for a lost time to do concerning molding and group cooperative energy. On the off chance that the Rugby Championship proceeds this year, the All Blacks and Wallabies will have a bit of leeway over the Boks in these regards.

There’s nothing the South African mentors and players can do about that, however. They should center on the structure towards a greater objective.

It’s urging to imagine that the Boks met up in mid-2018 and figured out how to make something happen over about a year and a half. They were confronted with various difficulties, and time was unquestionably against them, yet that procedure finished in the group winning the World Cup. Presently we’re going to see them getting ready for a Lions arrangement in less than a year.

How might they make the best of the circumstance? As I’ve referenced in past segments, I’d love to see everybody included going all out to make this residential rivalry one recollect.

We perceived how the New Zealand open reacted in the early adjusts of Super Rugby Aotearoa this previous June. It is incredible to see the South African fans when the conditions permit it – turning out in their thousands to help nearby sides stacked with Boks.

Those residential matches will be about far beyond results. They will twofold as national preliminaries. Each of the six establishments will be included, and where conceivable, the people pulling the strings should hope to reinforce the more fragile groups.

On the off chance that the Kings, for instance, can’t handle a serious side, for what reason shouldn’t a third-or fourth-decision player from another establishment join the Eastern Cape crew on credit? At last, we ought to utilize this opposition to give all of South Africa’s best players however much game time as could be expected.

All in all, we ought to be hoping to recapture our physical and mental edge after months from the game. We should show the world that we have the drive and abilities to be a power, paying little mind to the difficulties that come to our direction.

Shark attack need home fans for Lions

Sharks CEO Eduard Coetzee has promised the British & Irish Lions that their visit to Durban in 2021 will be delightful away from the field.

Durban’s hospitality always is. There aren’t many better places for sports teams when touring in South Africa. Rugby fans can book British Irish lions tour tickets on our website on exclusively discounted prices.

On the field, at Jonsson Kings Park, Coetzee has forewarned the best of England, Ireland, Wales and Scotland to expect no favours when the Cell C Sharks host the famed men in red on 10th July.

Coetzee joined the chorus of every other influential rugby voice in South Africa in urging rugby supporters in KwaZulu-Natal to register ticket interest and ensure that the black and white colours of the home team snuffs out the expected travelling Lions sea of red.

The Lions, in 2009, hammered the Sharks 39-3 but lost to John Smit’s Springboks 26-21 in the first Test in Durban. Smit was outstanding, the Boks were brutal and the Lions simply refused to go away, despite the imposing Springboks start. The occasion rocked. It was a form of redemption for the Springboks after the Lions had claimed a series win against the Springboks at the same ground in 1997.

I was in the press box on both occasions but nothing could match the intensity of the 1997 evening when Lions and England midfielder Jeremy Guscott kicked a late drop-goal to beat the Boks 18-15.

The Boks infamously scored three tries to nil but lost to five Neil Jenkins penalties and Guscott’s magical three-pointer. Guscott’s midfield partner, Welshman Scott Gibbs, was thunderous in the Test and famously bounced Os du Randt. It was the first time I’d seen Os hammered in contact and the only other time I’d see the iconic Bok prop put on his backside in the tackle was when Samoan giant Henry Tuilagi introduced himself to Os and every Bok at the 2007 World Cup opener in Paris.

Durban hummed for the tourists in 1997 after their shock victory and while there was South African sanity in 2009, what still rankled with the South African players was the

sea of red at their home stadiums, be it the Tests or tour matches.

Springbok lock legend Victor Matfield, in a recent interview, spoke about the Durban Test in 2009 and also the bizarre experience of running out at his home ground Loftus Versfeld and hardly seeing a Springbok jersey in the crowd.

“We could have been playing at Twickenham or Cardiff,” said Matfield. ”I had never seen so much travelling support at a South African venue.’

Sharks players, involved in the 2009 match against the Lions, also speak about the absolute hollowness of trying to find their supporters among the sea of red.

Coetzee is adamant that there can’t be a repeat of 2009 in 2021.

“This has to be a home game for the Sharks and the Lions must know that they’ve been in a game against one of the best teams in Super Rugby. There has to be a collective coming together of Sharks and South African supporters. We simply can’t be outnumbered at Jonsson Kings Park,” said Coetzee. “We know that the Lions supporters come en-masse but on the 10th July, it has to be one where black and white dominate in the stands.

“We have a wonderful rugby culture and our current squad is exceptionally talented. We will show the Lions and their supporters the most amazing time as hosts, but for 80 minutes they must know they are playing an away match.”

Registration for the ticket ballot is the only way to stand a chance of getting a ticket and the rugby folk of Durban have to up their game. In the past few months, more than 40 000 South Africans registered an interest for tickets, but only five per cent were from KwaZulu-Natal.

“We are busy announcing all our players who have committed past 2021, with many signing beyond 2023, so we will have a competitive team capable of performing against the best Europe can offer,” said Coetzee. “There are few occasions that can match a Sharks rugby occasion when the home support fills the stands. The rugby is always good and the party goes on late into the night. It is one of the great experiences for any rugby player.”

The Lions in the professional era have beaten the Sharks 42-12 (1997) and 39-3 (2009) in Durban and won one and lost one against the Springboks at Jonsson Kings Park.

Former Wales wing Shane Williams – Lions jersey makes you feel 12 foot tall

Former Wales wing Shane Williams has opened up on his pride of wearing a British & Irish Lions jersey during their tour of New Zealand in 2005.

Fresh from helping Wales win a Grand Slam Six Nations title in 2005, Williams was named in the Lions squad for their New Zealand tour. Rugby fans can book British lions 2021 tickets on our website on exclusively discounted prices.

In an interview with the Lions website, the short wing recalled feeling like a giant when he was able to pull on the famous red shirt in a historic warm-up match against Argentina in Cardiff.

‘To put the Lions jersey on for the first time, I remember putting it on and feeling 12 feet tall,’ Williams told the Lions website. ‘To play for Wales was my dream as a kid and I knew all about the history of the Lions.

‘But I never thought for one minute that I would play for Wales, let alone the Lions. So, when the chance comes along you’re pinching yourself, you are.

‘When I put that jersey on for the Argentina game, I was so proud. It didn’t matter who we were playing, where we were playing, I was so proud.

‘The fact that we were playing at the Millennium Stadium was huge because I knew we would have a lot of Welsh fans there. It was at my home stadium and I just couldn’t wait to go. It was a huge honor and it was a capped game as well, so that’s a Lions international Test cap. I’m very proud of that moment and to have my family there watching, it was huge.’

During the tour, Williams would make a small bit of history by equalling a single-game Lions record when he scored five tries in a midweek match against Manawatu.

‘Every time I put the Lions jersey on, whether it be against the All Blacks, South Africa, Manawatu, Otaga, whatever, I was beaming that I’d made it and had that opportunity,’ Williams said.

‘I was put in that Lions squad to score tries, that’s my job. I suppose I’m the Messi or Shearer of rugby. When it comes to football they are there to score goals, I’m there to score tries. Every time there was a game for the Lions I would put my hand up, I wanted to play. I’d play every single game if the coaches would let me.’

However, the rest of the tour would not go to plan for the Lions as they were handed a 3-0 series defeat by an All Blacks side inspired by the likes of Dan Carter and Sitiveni Sivivatu.

‘We were completely outplayed – New Zealand in 2005 was probably one of the best All Black teams I played against,’ Williams explained. ‘We were outmuscled, we were outfought, they were absolute class. I remember playing in that second Test and Dan Carter was everywhere. It was probably his best game in a New Zealand shirt I’d say, he was scoring points for fun.

‘They were incredible on that tour. Not only were the Test games tough, the midweek matches as well were so physical, so hard, but that’s life. Sometimes you come up against better teams, better players and you learn a lot from it. I like to think I learned a lot from that tour and wouldn’t change it – it’s been and it’s gone.’

English clubs must protect Lions players

UK rugby scribe Daniel Schofield believes English Premiership clubs must provide proper time for rest to its leading players, especially in the lead-up to the British & Irish Lions tour next year.

Due to the break in play caused by the coronavirus pandemic, European clubs are set to embark on an arduous playing journey, with the second part of the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons running in close proximity without any real break in between. Rugby fans can book British lions 2021 tickets on our website on exclusively discounted prices.

In his column in the Telegraph, Schofield writes that clubs’ failure to give players significant rest could be disastrous to the Lions’ cause for their much-anticipated tour of South Africa next year.

English clubs must protect Lions players
English clubs must protect Lions players

‘Of the original 41-man squad who went to New Zealand in June 2017, 19 had suffered significant injuries by Christmas. Two players, captain Sam Warburton and Jared Payne, would be forced to retire in the subsequent months,’ Schofield writes.

‘This, of course, was after a “normal” season. One cannot help but shudder at the prospect of the carnage that will ensue 12 months from now following the schedule from hell that begins with the resumption of the Premiership season a week on Friday. For leading European players, there follow 52 consecutive weeks of action, which conclude with the third Lions Test against South Africa on 7 August 2021.

‘In that period, some Premiership clubs may play seven games in 28 days before some of those same players are thrust into six internationals in seven weeks as the next domestic campaign begins.

English clubs must protect Lions players

‘Of course, no one wanted this schedule, brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic. Fitting overlapping calendars into the next 12 months is a huge feat of logistical planning in itself. But the next administrator who dares utter the bare-faced lie that “player welfare is our No 1 priority” should be put in stocks and pelted with rotten vegetables for all 52 of those weeks.

‘The question is, not whether players will be broken, but of mitigating against the inevitable damage. After concluding a bruising war over pay cuts, Premiership Rugby and the Rugby Players’ Association are in negotiations with the Rugby Football Union over establishing further safeguards to player welfare.’

British and Irish Lions Tour – Warren Gatland open to working for the Chiefs ‘for free’ if 2021 tour is cancelled

Chiefs head coach Warren Gatland has revealed he would “absolutely” like to return to the Hamilton franchise next year should the 2021 British and Irish Lions tour to South Africa be cancelled.

Gatland will leave his post with the Chiefs next season to take the helm of the Lions for a third consecutive tour. He leads the team to a series win against the Wallabies in 2013 and a series draw against the All Blacks in 2017. He is then expected to return to see out the final two years of his four-year deal with the two-time Super Rugby champions. Maori All Blacks and Bay of Plenty coach Clayton MacMillan signing a one-year contract to fill the void left by Gatland next season.

Should the COVID-19 pandemic, which continues to wreak havoc in South Africa, force the cancellation of the tour to the Republic. Gatland said he would relish the opportunity to return to the Chiefs.

The Lions tour was given the go-ahead three weeks ago. This allows some “certainty” for the multitude of fans expected to travel from the United Kingdom.

There are over half a million coronavirus cases in South Africa. There is plenty of uncertainty about the feasibility of the eight-match tour. Tour is scheduled to kick-off against the Stormers in Cape Town on July 3.

“It’s something we haven’t talked about. I’d have to do it for free, probably, I won’t get paid,” Gatland said when asked on Friday if he would like to stay involved in the Chiefs’ plans next season if the Lions tour is called off.

But absolutely. In these last seven or eight weeks, I’ve learnt a lot about the players. What sort of things you’d do differently, what things you would continue with. Working with the other coaches, hopefully, the things that we’ve learnt collectively will be beneficial for next year.

“So [if he’s with the Lions] it’s going to be a challenge. Would I like that continuity? I would. But we’re still day by day and we’re seeing what’s going to be happening in that space going forward.”

Gatland will head to the UK early next month ahead of the 2020-21 domestic season. He begins to prepare for the tour as the Lions eye their first series win over the Springboks since 1997.

The Chiefs, meanwhile, will look to register their first Super Rugby Aotearoa win in their final game of the season against the Hurricanes in Wellington on Saturday.

Established in 2002, the Lions Charitable Trust focuses on providing financial support for the home unions’ funds for injured players and offering assistance to Lions who may have fallen on hard times.

Warburton won the first of his 74 caps for Wales in 2009 and went on to skipper his country 49 times in a stunning nine-year international career.

At the age of 24, Warburton was made the youngest ever Lions captain for the victorious 2013 tour to Australia. He also led the Lions again four years later in New Zealand as the sides drew 1-1.

Warburton said: “I am thrilled to be joining the Lions Charitable Trust at an incredibly exciting time for the charity and help lead it on the next stage of its development.

“The work of the Trust is incredibly important in providing help to support former Lions in hardship.

“I look forward to working with the other Trustees and Lions staff to build on the excellent work that has already been carried out to date.”

Shane Whelan, Secretary of the Lions Charitable Trust, said: “We are delighted to appoint Fergus Slattery as Chairman and such an esteemed cohort of Trustees.

“Their knowledge and network, which spans four generations of Lions, will be an exceptional asset as we develop the Trust and ensure it is in the best possible position to support worthy causes and former Lions in times of crisis.”

Slattery added: “I am honored to have been selected to join the new Board and to take on the role of Chairman. The Trust is at an important point in its development and has a great opportunity to build its influence in the world of rugby.

Plenty of time for prospective British Lions tour 2021

Former England and British & Irish Lions wing Ugo Monye says there will be more than enough opportunities for players to prove themselves before the 2021 tour of South Africa.

Monye has personal experience of rising from the fringes as he went from playing as a reserve for the English Saxons to starting against the Springboks when the Lions last toured South Africa in 2009. Rugby fans can book Springboks vs British and lions Tickets on our website on exclusively discounted prices.

The then 26-year-old not only scored an excellent solo try in the third Test, which the Lions won but also finished the tour as the top try-scorer – with five scores to his name.

Plenty of time for prospective British Lions tour 2021

With over half of 2020 already lost to the Covid-19 pandemic, prospective Lions players will be concerned over whether they will be left with enough time to prove their worth before the tour gets underway in July next year.

However, Monye told the Lions website that while a few names may already be penciled in for next year’s squad, there will still be plenty of time for a couple of surprise names to surface.

‘I got capped in November 2008 and ended up going on a Lions Tour with six international caps,’ Monye said. ‘There is all manner of opportunity and I think it’s a really interesting time.

‘We have seen players emerge in the Premiership and almost get capped this season – Louis Rees-Zammit is absolute lightning and I’d say he’d go well on a fast track in South Africa.

‘The impact that these players can have, I wouldn’t be ruling anyone out. There will be four or five players that are not on the Lions radar now that will be spoken about regarding going on that Tour.

‘There won’t be many but there will be some guys that enter the conversation, but there is a big difference between being part of the conversation and being on the plane – that’s for sure.

Plenty of time for prospective British Lions tour 2021
Plenty of time for prospective British Lions tour 2021

‘No one knows what this rugby world in the next year is going to look like. But if we can get a full calendar of games, Autumn Internationals in whatever capacity, Six Nations as well as the domestic leagues and European competition – there are enough games at a high level to be able to prove yourself.

‘So, for anyone who doesn’t feel they are automatic selection, it doesn’t matter, it doesn’t matter. There are plenty of games, plenty of opportunities to make a late surge.’
