Cricket Australia said on October 29, 2026, that Smith hurt a small facet joint in his neck. This key joint holds head motion and lets batters track fast balls well. Fortunately, the formal scan results cleared the skilled right-hander of any lasting or career-ending bone damage.
The sore problem began on day four of the second Test game in Gqeberha last week. Smith felt a sharp drop in his neck motion and could not turn his head well. Thus, national bosses ruled him out for the final third Test match in Cape Town.
How Australia Managed the Third Test Match Without Smith
All-rounder Cameron Green stepped up to fill in for Smith in the series final at Newlands in Cape Town. Green had just recovered from his own health problems to win back a spot in the playing eleven. He took over the key number four batting spot for the current Cricket World Cup winners.
The Australian batting order showed great grit while missing their most trusted middle-order rock in South Africa. South Africa made a strong score of 329 runs in their first turn on a tough pitch. In reply, Australia hit a huge 330 for four by the end of day two.

Recovery Timeline and Return Date for the Veteran Batter

Health doctors said that neck joint swelling needs focused therapy and full rest from hard batting drills. Pushing a player back from neck tightness often leads to repeat muscle cramps during long innings. Due to this danger, bosses put his long-term fitness for the Cricket World Cup 2027 run.
Smith stays a main figure in the national team across both red-ball and white-ball games. His huge skill on African pitches makes him priceless for the coming event in South Africa. Every CWC 2027 warm-up series next year will lean hard on his smart guidance and calm mood.
