But before heading Down Under, they face an early test at home: a matchup with Argentinaโs Los Pumas. Itโs been 20 years since the two sides last clashed a 25-25 draw salvaged by a last-gasp Johnny Wilkinson penalty and both teams will be hungry to come away with a win this time.
Given the timing of the match, both sides are without a few key players still tied up with club commitments or fresh off finals. Still, thereโs plenty of intrigue in the lineups. England fly-half Fin Smith will make his Lions debut in the No. 10 jersey, partnering with Alex Mitchell in an all-English halfback pairing.
Maro Itoje, earning his first captaincy for the Lions, leads a pack featuring Tom Curry at blindside flanker, Jac Morgan at open side, and Ben Earl at No. 8. Tadhg Beirne joins Itoje in the second row, while Ellis Genge, Luke Cowan-Dickie, and Finlay Bealham form the front row. In the backline, Marcus Smith slots in at full-back, with Tommy Freeman and Duhan van der Merwe on the wings.

British and Irish Lions 2025: Lionsโ Lineup Highlights and Key Pairings vs. Argentina
Bundee Aki and Sione Tuipulotu form a powerful midfield duo, leaving out Huw Jones for this first fixture. Off the bench, teenager Henry Pollock could earn his Lions debut, while Irelandโs Ronan Kelleher is the only player involved who played in last weekendโs domestic finals. Tadhg Furlong returns from injury to bolster the bench, which also includes Elliot Daly and Mack Hansen as backline reinforcements.
On the other side, Argentina head coach Felipe Contepomi has named Julian Montoya as captain just days after featuring in Leicesterโs Premiership final loss, as they prepare to face the British and Irish Lions 2025 squad. His lineup includes eight Premiership-based starters, with several Top 14 players still to join the team.
Contepomi acknowledged the limited preparation time and new faces in his squad but praised their adaptability and focus ahead of Fridayโs clash at Dublinโs Aviva Stadium. Andy Farrell, meanwhile, has been transparent about his desire to experiment with key combinations during this tour. Three combinations stand out in particular ahead of the opener.
First is the halfback pairing of Mitchell and Smith. While the more established duo of Jamison Gibson-Park and Finn Russell was expected to lead the Lions’ attack, Gibson-Parkโs injury and the timing of the tour have opened the door for the Northampton pair. Their existing chemistry could prove vital in adapting quickly to Farrellโs intricate, fast-paced attacking structures.

Lions Vs Argentina Tickets: Midfield Muscle and Tactical Twists in Lions Opener
Next is the imposing midfield pairing of Bundee Aki and Sione Tuipulotu. While both are natural inside centers, Tuipulotu has shown he can comfortably handle the 13 roles and with his playmaking ability and Akiโs direct running, this duo could wreak havoc on the gain line. In the pack, the Itoje-Beirne lock combination looks set to be a core part of the Lions’ test lineup.
Itoje brings relentless energy at the breakdown, while Beirneโs knack for turnovers and open-field carrying makes them a dangerous pairing that fits perfectly into Farrellโs all-court style of play. As for Lions Vs Argentina Tickets, Contepomi has made some exciting calls too.
The pairing of Albornoz at fly-half and Santiago Carreras at full-back used to great effect late in the 2024 Rugby Championship gives the Pumas dual playmaking threats and added creativity in attack. Itโs a combo that could pose real problems for a Lions defense still trying to find its rhythm. In the forwards, the back row trio of Pablo Matera, Juan Gonzalez, and Joaquin Oviedo is a high-quality, physical unit.
Expect them to aggressively contest the breakdown and look for mismatches in the Lionsโ structure. All signs point to a fascinating curtain-raiser in Dublin one that will offer early insights into what both squads are building ahead of their respective 2025 campaigns.
